When looking for the best wings in Chicago, diners wouldn’t know they can find them at a sushi restaurant, but they can. Juno Sushi offers an assortment of popular nigiri, sashimi, sushi, and ramen dishes, and one unexpected menu item: chicken wings with sweet pepper marmalade, kohlrabi, and togarashi. Togarashi, a Japanese chili pepper, packs some heat, so diners with milder tastes can ask for the chef to prepare the wings with a little less spice. Or counter the heat with one of the five Japanese craft beers offered at Juno.

Margeaux Brasserie is an upscale bistro in Chicago’s famous Waldorf Astoria hotel, tastefully done up in golds and browns and black-and-white parquet flooring. One of award-winning chef Michael Mina’s concept restaurants, Margeaux focuses on classic French cuisines such as foie gras and bouillabaisse. The menu for happy hour, held in the bar and lounge from 4-6 p.m. daily, offers a French take on Buffalo wings—duck wings a l’orange. These little bits of heaven are boneless and sauced with Grand Marnier and orange zest. Exquisite!

The suave, polished dining room of Carson’s, uniform with its black banquettes, white chairs and tablecloths, and wood accents, definitely says “steakhouse.” And though it seems almost too formal for the myriad BBQ choices on its menu, diners also love it for its ribs and Mediterranean pork chop. Included in that love are the chargrilled Mediterranean wings, made with lemon and served with a homemade blue cheese sauce. They’re available on both the lunch and dinner menus. Fingers will get dirty, and that’s more than okay.

Barrio is the city’s fun place to go for Mexican food in an energetic atmosphere. They’ve got a DJ booth where tunes are spun, but not at a volume that prohibits conversation. Foodies will want to try the grilled octopus tacos, while vegetarians may opt for the forest mushroom tacos—an intriguing dish. The wings here? Yeah, they may be some of the best around, glazed with serrano honey with hints of ginger and served with not just ranch dressing, but avocado ranch dressing. Full-on yum!

TAO Chicago is the second location of this nightclub/restaurant, and it takes inspiration from the first, in New York City. This Asian bistro has a club vibe and welcoming, adventurous décor (20-foot tall Quan Yin statue, anyone?), and a 300-seat dining area. Diners looking for wings will find them on the dim sum menu, as chicken wing “lollipops” in a sweet and sour sauce with Thai basil and peanuts. Wing lovers may also want the crispy orange chicken featured on “the sky” portion of the dinner menu.

The few farmhouse-style tables give the Chicken and Farm Shop cred, while the colorful vintage-style chairs and funky lamps add the fun. Two counters with swivel chairs are reminiscent of both a diner and an apothecary, and the lights are lower at night to add a warm, welcoming, rustic ambiance. Chicken is on the menu here, quite literally. Rotisserie, crispy, BBQ, smoky, on a bun, on a waffle, falling off the bone. Want wings? Just choose between BBQ and hot & smoky, and enjoy the dill sauce for dipping.

With shared banquettes but individual tables, Doc B’s can get a little neighborly, so diners may want to snag an outside table on days when Chicago’s famous wind isn’t blowing off the lake. The fare here is decidedly American, with burgers and sandwiches, salads and pizzas. Customers come back for the wok out bowls, individualized with vegetables, protein, sauce, and grains. Not to be outdone, the oven roasted chicken wings win rave reviews, and they’re available at a reduced price during happy hour!

A rustic setting meets modern efficiency at Bar Siena, a two-story restaurant serving the flavors of Italy with a decidedly American twist. This is the place to come for all sorts of occasions, and a Puppy Patio means even the family dog can tag along. Amid the Italian delicacies on the antipasti menu (meatballs, focaccia, burrata) are some of the best wings in Chicago—done Diavolo style with a habanero sauce and lemon caper ranch dressing for dipping. Wash them down with a fresh pull of Fist City, a Chicago pale ale that’s on tap, or any number of the bottles, drafts, and cans on offer.

As “new” Asian cuisine, Sunda celebrates the foods of the countries surrounding the Sunda Shelf, a submerged landmass. This means dishes highlight the flavors of China, Japan, the Philippines, South Korea, and more, over noodles, in broths, in dim sum, and in a range of creative signature sushi offerings. Chicken wings here showcase a taste of South Korea, with gochujang (red chili paste) glaze and a dusting of gochugaru (red pepper flakes). Scallions, sesame seeds, and crushed peanuts round out these singular Seoul wings—a definite customer favorite.

Billed as “Chicago’s first sushi restaurant,” Kamehachi has been in business for more than four decades. This original location in Old Town serves not just consistently delicious sushi, but also tempura, yakitori, udon soups, teriyaki dishes, nigiri, sashimi, and more. Although customers typically come for the gyoza and sushi, those looking for wings will find tori kara among the hot appetizer offerings. Pair these spicy chicken wings with a sesame glaze with one of the more than 20 sakes offered, or try a sake flight highlighting three.
