Diners' Choice Winners: Best Overall
Northern MI's best restaurants based upon thousands of OpenTable diner reviews
The Boathouse is a favorite stop when we travel north. Parking is ample and right out front. The restaurant is relatively small with an intimate feel, but large enough not to feel crowded. It is situated on the waterfront overlooking the west arm of Grand Traverse Bay, about 15 minutes up the Old Mission Peninsula from Traverse City. Many window-side tables, but view from interior tables is just fine. First rate appointments. The service is excellent, very welcoming and knowledgeable. We were seated on time. We started with whitefish dip and a dozen very fresh and tasty oysters. Mushroom soup was incredibly good, as was an onion soup with duck confit. Lobster tails were outstanding, a full pound, and the steaks were tender and delicious, prepared exactly to order and were excellent cuts of meat. Accompaniments were excellent. An extensive wine list features northern Michigan wines as well as a balanced selection of choices from California and around the world. Desserts and coffee were very good. The restaurant is expensive, but is really outstanding. Our party of four dined for a couple of hours with cocktails, appetizers, main courses, dessert, and two bottles of very nice wine, which cost us about $200 per person including gratuity. If you choose to limit some of the add-ons, and choose some of the excellent local wines you can cut that in half; some local hotels also have coupon books that offer 10% off. Plan an afternoon visiting local wineries and stop in for a fabulous dinner to see the sun set over the bay. You will not be disappointed in the Boathouse. MoreOpenTable Diner -
