On the rooftop of downtown’s stylish NoMad Hotel is an expansive pool, bar and café space. It has the aesthetic of a Mediterranean villa and the vibe of an exclusive all-day soiree. Know that the pool and loungers are for hotel guests only, but the public is welcome to drink, dine and enjoy the rooftop from morning until night. The café offers breakfast, lunch and dinner. The all-day menu features light bites like whipped fava bean hummus, crudites and burrata with marinated radishes. Some more substantial options include crispy fish tacos, fried chicken and a classic burger. The NoMad Rooftop’s bar program, which focuses on playful tropical cocktails and tiki drinks, is a major draw. So are the incredible views across downtown from 12 stories up.

Sweeping city views from the poolside dining terrace are just one of many enticing assets of the Tower Bar. This chic restaurant tops the circa-1929 Sunset Tower Hotel in West Hollywood. Diners enjoying the scene at one of the most famous rooftop restaurants in Los Angeles need to do so in the moment – there’s a no photographs, no phone calls rule at this celebrity-frequented spot. It’s long been that way: The bar’s host hotel is a gorgeously updated time-capsule of the Golden Age of Hollywood. The food also leans in to nostalgia, with mid-century favorites like chicken pot pie, fried chicken and an iceberg wedge salad sharing space on the menu with health food. There are also high-end options like caviar service and a lavish seafood tower.

The focus is on healthy and fresh, produce-forward California cuisine. At breakfast this is exemplified by the signature “The Grass is Greener” cold-pressed juice, while lunch and dinner highlights include a chilled watermelon salad and the turkey burger a la plancha. On summertime weekends the Roof Garden’s chefs barbecue Angus beef burgers, steaks, chicken and fish. Within the rooftop space is chef David Codney’s own garden. It produces herbs, peppers, strawberries, tomatillos and more for use in the kitchen.

The fine-dining restaurant occupies the 71st floor of the U.S. Bank Tower in downtown Los Angeles, one of the tallest buildings in California.
