About the restaurant

As its name suggests, the menu at Farmer’s Apprentice changes constantly based on what’s harvested at the nearby farms it works with. Some recent highlights on the family-style menu include a hazelnut miso eggplant with charred scallions, heirloom tomatoes with crispy shrimp, and yellowtail fish in a saffron sauce. The open kitchen offers views of the chefs dehydrating, smoking, and fermenting all kinds of ingredients, making for an action-packed evening at the restaurant.

Excellent experience at Farmer’s Apprentice last night. We make a point of dining out at least every quarter with our lifelong friends. Each time we dine at a place none of us have been to before and Farmer’s Apprentice did not disappoint. We dined family style which for this restaurant I believe is the way to go as it gives you the opportunity to sample a broad selection from their delicious menu. Each plate is a celebration of locally sourced ingredients that are all layered with flavours from around the globe. The staff is wonderful providing excellent friendly service. All of our servers we very knowledgeable about their menu but one who I would describe as more shy than the rest also displayed an honest passion for the food created in her restaurant.

About the restaurant

Downtown’s Mott 32, which reopened in January, is the only Canadian outpost of the famed international restaurant with locations in Hong Kong, Dubai, and Las Vegas. Chef Lee Man Sing’s menu has Cantonese and Sichuan influences with highlights including the Peking duck, which requires a 48-hour preparation; barbecued Iberico pork; and dim sum such as a soft-boiled quail egg inside a pork siu mai. Designer Joyce Wang imagined Mott 32’s luxe interiors featuring leather banquets and gold accents on the wallpaper.

The atmosphere and decor were classic American Steakhouse, very well done and comfortable. The bone in ribeye was fantastic, great flavor and perfectly cooked. The impeccable service put the experience over the top. Our waiter, Jon, and his team were great. If you happen to be in Vancouver and enjoy fine dining, I highly recommend Gotham Steakhouse.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Gastown, so I looked forward to showing my SIL this place. As my SIL was still recovering from a bout of diverticulitis, I didn’t order a bottle of wine. I had two wines by the glass, and we shared a few dishes. We started with their fabulous bread service, then a Dungeness Crab salad, an Artichoke tart and their Terrine of Fois Gras. Our “main” was their Agnolotti. I had a glass of 2022 Garnier et Fils Chablis with the salads and a glass of 2016 Synchromesh Pinot Noir from Storm Haven Vineyard in Okanagan Falls, BC with foie gras and agnolotti. The Artichoke Tart was half salad, half egg custard tart with pieces of artichoke between the two. It was a light, refreshing dish. The Dungeness Crab Salad was a visual surprise … the crab was placed between thin slices of radish and decorated with green leaves. It was interesting; perhaps a little too subtle in flavor for me. The foie gras terrine came with two thick pieces of brioche. The square of terrine was decorated with squares of wine jelly, and cherry halves. The terrine was soft and silky and the brioche so buttery. The star of the evening was the Sweet Corn Agnolotti. Pillows of mascarpone pasta were covered with pieces of sweet corn and a generous helping of sliced black truffle. This dish was “to die for” and I wanted to order a second plate. I love the food at L’Abattoir and dine here every time I come to Vancouver.

Coal Harbour
About the restaurant

LIFT’s waterfront views of Stanley Park and the North Shore are its biggest draw, but its seafood-focussed menu is just as compelling with halibut cooked in a sage-infused brown butter sauce, scallop and prawn linguine, and crispy squid with Sichuan peppers. Going here for weekend brunch is a solid bet, too, with four kinds of eggs Benedict, among other savoury options.

About the restaurant

Miku chef Seigo Nakamura is best known as the man who introduced Vancouver (and Canada) to the joys of flamed-seared aburi sushi, back in 2008 with the debut of his waterfront restaurant. Aside from the famed sushi, diners can opt for a multi-course kaiseki menu or choose from à la carte options such as lobster risotto. Show-stopping desserts including green tea opera cake are a must to end the meal. When weather permits, grab a seat on the patio, which overlooks the five sails of Canada Place.

Downtown
About the restaurant

Afternoon tea at any of Canada’s Fairmont hotels is always a treat, and it’s no different at the downtown outpost, where it’s served at the Notch8 restaurant. There are nearly a dozen tea selections to choose from, and the drinks come alongside a sumptuous spread of sandwiches including a smoked sablefish creation, cheddar and buttermilk scones, and a host of cakes. For a boozy afternoon, opt for one of the cocktails: the sunflower combines gin, elderflower liqueur, orange-flavoured liqueur, absinthe, and lemon. Diners can also opt to eat at the rooftop dining room with views of the city for weekend brunch.

The food was unique and delicious. The cocktails are top notch, so good! The only negative was it took a very long time to get our bill. That said, this was our second time here and we’ll be back! A hidden gem.
