Le Yaca began in 1964 in Courchevel, a tiny, country village in the French Alps. Daniele Bourderau & Gerard decided it would be fun to open a small restaurant. When friends learned of their plans, they told the hopeful restaurateurs they were crazy to think people would drive eight kilometers on a winding, icy road for dinner. Daniele and Gerard hesitated for three months and then decided, “yaca le faire,” a contraction of the French phrase “il n’y a qu’a le faire,” which basically means, “let’s do it.” They called the restaurant Le Yaca as a gag, but the name caught on with customers who were amused by the pun and contributed to the restaurant’s lore by inventing “yaca-isms” of their own: yaca y aller (let’s go). Daniele came to the United States and opened Le Yaca in Williamsburg. Daniel Abid bought Le Yaca in 2001. Daniel worked and trained in such prestigious places as “Le Pre Catelan” and “Lenotre” in Paris; “L’Amandier” and “Roger Verge," and to top it all off, “Alain Ducasse.”

We love bringing out of town guests here. Always great seafood, service, and a great setting in Merchant Square area. All menu options recommended and $1 oysters daily to 7 are one of our favorite starters.

We had an amazing experience! Love the ambience, candlelight, guitar player, and the food and drinks were phenomenal. I highly recommend the beef steak. It seriously was one of the best steaks I’ve ever had. We had the King’s Arm punch that was brought to us in a punch bowl and it was delicious as well.

Excellent dover sole and probably one of the best veal piccata dishes I have had in ages. Soup and salad starters were first rate as well. They have a large menu encompassing all the French standards and favorites plus a good cocktail and wine selection. Great ambience for a busy restaurant--not too loud for conversation. Service was a bit slow to begin with, but I think our server was dealing with a problem diner who took extra time as service smoothed out after cocktails.
