Popoca means “to emit smoke” in Nawat, the language of native people of El Salvador who stoked wood fires to prepare food over a comal for their families. Revered as more than just a means of cooking, smoke represents a prayer or offering to the spirits.Popoca is a mix of heritage and play. Our food is driven by preserving past, creating something new and uniquely Oakland. After their first 2 restaurants, Pastoral in Berkeley (first opened in 1982 while still students, 37 in the architecture program at Cal and San-Ju painting at SFAI) then later Soizic (Jack London Square, 1996), they wanted to shift gears from heavily curated menus to more comfort-based fare catering more to the eclectic and artistic community in Oakland.     The food is a wonderful combination of both classic El Salvadoran dishes as well as contemporary spins . The server was knowledgeable and friendly. The food is the best I have had in a long time. I can’t wait to go back, probably next week. I can’t imagine anyone not loving Popoca. A truly inspirational and elevating, dining experience, bravo!

    I met a friend for lunch there. It was great. I was able to make a reservation. I'm not working right now, but my friend does work. I wanted a place where we'd not be stuck in a line to get food. We could sit, eat, and catch up. Bocanova provided that. The service was friendly and efficient. The food was great. It was well seasoned and didn't have too much salt. We shared the Brussels sprouts appetizer, and I got one of the lunch specials. It was an ahi tuna schnitzel, and was very good. My friend got some smaller dishes. I'm not exactly sure which ones, but she seemed to enjoy the food as much as I did. It's a great spot for a casual lunch in a great location. I'm glad that I chose it!
