Abacá is an airy, atelier-style restaurant with a cool outdoor terrace, whipping up Filipino-Californian cuisine with flair in Fisherman's Wharf. It's the bricks-and-mortar spin off of chef Francis Ang's pop-up Pinoy Heritage. The lively menu is split up into barbecue sticks, noodles and rice, and small to big plates, but its far more nuanced than just that. Flavourful dishes pull from family recipes and are glazed with modern and heritage technique to result in a vibrancy that's hard to come by. It's grounded by local produce. To begin, we had complementary a potato and cauliflower soup. Then, we ordered the 3- and 4-course dinners: lobster salad & lobster and seafood risotto to start, the branzino, the lamb and the scallops as mains and the chestnut pavlova and chocolate souffle for dessert. We enjoyed every course, but I especially like the mains. The scallops, which came with spaghetti squash were cooked perfectly and had a lovely buttery texture. The branzino had a crispy skin, and I liked the sauce so much that I finished it by using my bread to wipe it up. The lamb with polenta was tender and flavorful. At the end, we were also presented with a plate of confections and pumpkin muffins with cream cheese filling, with we've saved for breakfast. The only one that didn't hit the mark for us was the complementary small bowl of potato and cauliflower soup with a dollop of orange gellé(?) in the center. The flavor was so mild that I basically tasted the orange. Overall, everything was beautifully plated and delicious, and service was superb. Definitely go there at least once in your life!
