Los Angeles’ pizza game just got stronger, thanks to Detroit, Tokyo, and New York style pizzas making their way to the West Coast. Santa Monica’s newly opened Emmy Squared, an outpost of the beloved New York establishment, serves up Detroit’s signature deep dish pies with toppings that include house-made vodka sauce and Calabrian chiles for some kick.
Meanwhile, over in Echo Park, Quarter Sheets’ pan pizzas have been making waves across the city, though owners Aaron Lindell and Hannah Ziskin say they’re less influenced by Detroit-style pies and more by a variety of preparations. Prince St. Pizza is another New York transplant, which opened its second LA location Downtown in June, making their pepperoni cup-covered slices a mainstay in the city, while Pizzeria Sei’s Tokyo-style charred, airy crust keeps diners coming back for more.
LA already had stellar pizza options in Triple Beam Pizza, DeSano Bakery, and La Antica da Michelle, but all these exports are bringing in even more dynamism into the city’s ever-expanding pizza scene.
