About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Innovative
  • Great for fine wines
Originally from Mexico City, Chef Fernando Olea, formerly Chef of Epazote, has been enthralling diners in Santa Fe since 1991. Chef Olea creates sophisticated flavors using Old Mexico’s indigenous and culinary traditions alongside ingredients from around the world. His menu is deliberately small, featuring fresh and locally sourced produce and meats when possible.

Nothing evokes the mystery of Mexican cuisine more than mole, a sauce of complex flavors that usually includes toasted and ground spices, seeds, nuts, chocolate and chile. Many mole recipes contain more than thirty ingredients and some recipes have five varieties of chile alone. Chef Olea is delighted to share his moles that include his "New Mexican Mole" that he created to commemorate Santa Fe’s 400 year anniversary in 2009. The large mural in the main dining room, was painted and presented to Chef Olea by Federico Leon De La Vega, a well- known artist from Mexico City.

We offer customized menus, experienced servers, extraordinary food, and our very own Chef Fernando Olea’s culinary expertise and flair. There can be nothing more perfectly paired! We use organic and sustainable products whenever possible. Our menu celebrates the varied and complex flavors of classic dishes from Mexico City, Oaxaca, Michoacán and Puebla. Chef Olea brings these classic dishes to life with modern and New World techniques thereby imprinting his own distinct signature, or Sazón, into each and every dish. Menu items change with each season and can be customized to fit your needs. We also are happy to embellish the menu with entertainment, florals, linens, and unique décor. Disappointing overall. We were here 2 years ago, and the food was exceptional. This time, mediocre. Service is excellent, though.

Perhaps my expectations were too high, however for a dinner where I will spend over $100 per person, I think maybe not. The reviews were great, but our experience was only average. To start, for a high-end restaurant I expect that I will have difficulty choosing between great appetizers, mains, and desserts. At this restaurant, the choice was more a process of elimination...this doesn't look good, that doesn't look good, I guess we'll have to go with this one. So the menu needs a serious re-think in my opinion. The dishes we ordered were fine, but not overly memorable. The chef seems to have a sweet tooth, as several of the dishes had a sweet element that didn't belong, at least to my taste. Also, the website, promos, and serving staff talking points were all about the chef, awards, "best in state soup", etc. Perhaps it's time to stop looking at the past and focus on the future? Overall, if this had been an $80-100 meal for two instead of $200+ I would have said it was good. But it did not deliver at the requested price points.

Wasn’t Jean Georges but food was good. I get the impression they are resting on the former glory of the restaurant. Wine list was nearly devoid of French wines but had good Mexican and American bottles. We found value in the Spanish list. Have the Princessa for dessert.

I came with my friend from high school to celebrate our 70th birthdays and we were so glad we did. The food was outstanding, including the Soup of Love and the Halibut. And the staff were all so friendly and professional. They even brought us complimentary champagne and wonderful desserts with a candle in each. Nothing was overlooked. Anyone visiting Santa Fe for a special occasion should definitely make a reservation at Sazon.
