Rouge Ratings and Reviews
Overall, I would highly recommend Rouge.
The portions aren't large, but very typical of Nouvelle Cuisine. If you're looking for healthy sized portions, you may want to look elsewhere. However, the food was fantastic. The Atlantic lobster tortellini was delicious and the sturgeon was flavourful and cooked to perfection. My guest enjoyed the butter leaf lettuce salad and the smoked benchmark ribeye, which were also very tasty and prepared nicely. The meal was topped off with the dark chocolate brownie and the malted mousse cake, both of which were a pleasure to the senses.
The service was also excellent. Our waiter was observant and efficient without overkill. And the venue has character and is very quaint. As the restaurant is in an old house (and we went on a very cold evening), I was pleased to find the temperature very comfortable without any cold drafts, something quite typical in many restaurants of this nature.
I look forward to returning in the summer months to sample some of the produce grown on site.
I had been to the Cross House years ago and loved how the old house had been reinvented into a lovely restaurant. So after the transformation to Rouge some years ago and the many accolades I had heard, I was quite disappointed. While the food was excellent, there was simply no ambiance. The walls are stark white and the track lighting is bright. A beautiful old house that could easily have been decorated to reflect the era and enhance the old world experience was sorely lacking.
Our first time there. We had always wanted to try going there for a dinner meal but their bookings were full usually during festivities times, so we decided to do it after the New Year just for a lunch meal. It's actually more enjoyable as it's quieter & more relaxing. The food was excellent. They even offered a 3-course express weekday lunch for $25 only. We definitely will go back & bring some friends & relatives along. Thank you for the great food!
Went out for dinner with our son and his wife. We had the chefs tasting plate which was a 6 course meal Andre Wes went with the matching wine tasting. Enjoyed most of the courses very much especially the beef and tortellini courses. Had two red wines and two rose along with the dessert wine.
All good but enjoyed the Red’s the most. Quite pricy for the overall meal so not something we would do often.
Christmas get together with friends. Very good location with minimal noise for good conversation. The food was amazing as usual but the prices are very high. The wine list is off the charts for price with very few options less than $120 per bottle. Wines we can buy for $35 at liquor store are $100 to $125 and one of the ones at $95 they did not have and the second bottle at $110 they only had one botttle. Each one they recommended was $20 more. A great spot if cost is not a concern.
We went for her birthday, looking for a special night out. We opted for the Chefs’ tasting menu(6 courses)with the wine pairings. The food was delicious and the wine pairings were very well done. It was a lovely meal and (with the service we received) made her night a very special one.
A friend and I went to celebrate her birthday. We had the tasting menu and the accompanying wine selection. The tasting menu was very creative and had some excellent small servings. The wine pairings were carefully considered and suited the theme of the dishes they accompanied. The meal was good value for money, but predictably not cheap. The staff provided a very high quality level of service without being overly serious. All in all a memorable sortie.
The service was exceptional. The food was good. We did have a problem with the way the Pheasant Confit was prepared (too dry) , however, the wait staff and the management offered another choice of menu and delivered it very quickly. The second option (Beef cheeks) was very good. The ambiance was nice - lively, but not too noisy. The restaurant acknowledged and helped celebrate our special occasion indicated on the OpenTable reservation (birthday celebration). Thank you for a great evening.
Took forever to take our orders. Pheasant dish arrived, and was too dry to swallow. I mentioned it to the server and she wasn't surprised, and said that she has heard that often before. She did offer to let me get something else, but my date had hers and ended up waiting while they prepared something else for me. A man I can only presume was the manager came over with the replacement meal and just said "SALTY" and repeated over and over. Hard to hear him because crowd was so loud. I said "uh no, it was extremely dried out". He said "oh" and walked away. I found it very rude for any restaurant, let alone one that is supposed to be among the best in the city. The server was pleasant. Overall it made for a very unpleasant experience.
Last time we have been to Rouge was couple of years ago and the food was great. This time we were really disappointed with the taste of the meals, which was opposite to what it used to be. I used to love their bison tartar, which this time turned into a gooey lump of meat. The pheasant was incredibly salty. Disappointing to see such a negative change of taste.
Highly recommed this delightful restaurant. It is pricy so perfect for a special occasion and so worth it. The staff are all pleasant and know their stuff. We had the tasting menu which was so tasty, innovative. A delight. If choosing the tasting menu I suggest having the wine pairing as each carefully selected wine is in some cases essential, as some of the dishes are so rich in fat content or strong flavour that the wine helps change and soften the flavours. Well done! A great evening.
My wife and I had reservations for what we thought was going to be a nice evening out. We like upscale restaurants and always respect the restaurant by wearing nice clothes. On this night I wore a suit and my wife wore a nice red dress with a matching hat. Her hat was small and unobtrusive but clearly was part of her outfit. After seating us we were instructed that my wife would have to remover her hat. We were told that the restaurant had a not hat policy. My wife did remove it but we ultimately ended up walking out before we ordered. I thought upscale establishments brands would be enhanced by well groomed clients, kind of in keeping with the way the food is presented. They may want to consider putting this policy on their website so other guests don't get embarrassed the way we did.
Great salad ! Entree was overpriced and tiny. Bison was size of a loonie at $44. ! Salmon was poor quality and rubbery. This restaurant had its day in the sun. I believed the write ups and apologized to my wife for my poor choice on our 27th wedding anniversary dinner. Would not recommend.
This was our 26th Wedding Anniversary and we were congratulated with a complimentary glass of prosecco and a signed card from the restaurant. A very nice gesture.
The service from our waiter was fabulous & very attentive. The only set back was that everyone (all three tables) were very close together and one table had 3 people, which made us & another couple celebrating their anniversary to feel that it wasn't a very intimate experience. Otherwise the venue was perfect.
The food was excellent. The menu that was in restaurant was not the same menu online, which I was disappointed him because I based my decision I'm going to Rouge on the current menu that was online. My only recommendation would be to keep that updated so people know what to expect when they come in. The food was amazing though so I was able to find a dish that I enjoyed
The house is an 1800s heritage gem in a funky neighbourhood, but is in serious need of fence painting and floor polishing, not to mention the 50 dead flies in the light fixture in the women's washroom. Our food was so-so at best and very expensive. We had bison tartar as an appetizer, I had the halibut and my husband had the steak, and the best part of the meal was the bread. My risotto was not cooked enough and the halibut was moist, but nothing had much spice or flavour. Even the dessert was average. Felt like I could've made better food at home. The best part of the restaurant is the wait staff who are friendly and attentive. It was our anniversary so they gave us a free glass each of Prosecco which was appreciated. Would not go back though.
An awesome experience from the moment we walked in and was greeted by the host. The food is fantastic with great flavors and textures combos. The service is exceptional, attentive without being overbearing or intrusive.
There is a great attention to detail. Highly recommended.
Never disappoint. Food is top notch. What makes the restaurant special though is their service. My gf is celiac and they ran out of gluten free bread. The server ran to the next door restaurant and got bread for her! As fine as fine dining could be. Will definitely be back!
My pal Ralph is a transplant from Toronto and I'm a lifetime Calgarian.
Our mission is to see the sights and eat the food and enjoy our city.
We luncheoned at this lovely oasis before exploring Studio Bell.
We were the first and only patrons upon arrival (11:30 for luncheon).
Service was personable and professional.
Food was outstanding.
Fresh and Honest and Tasty as all Get Out. Gorgeous presentation.
We both ordered the Eggs Benny and were more than impressed.
However, I'm still dreaming of the amuse bouche puff pastry onion savory little morsel sent out by the chef before our entrees.
After that crazy good Cherry cocktail beverage.
And that sublime cookie treat at the end of the meal. Mmmmmm.
Super bonus points to our server for clearing the table whilst we strolled the grounds but leaving our water on the table should we decide to return before departure.
How very thoughtful!
We'll be back.
Thank you so very much.
