A Family Tradition for Over 90 Years

Mrs. Knott’s Chicken Dinner Restaurant first opened in 1934 with Mrs. Knott and her children serving the first customers in their tearoom. The restaurant has grown over the years into one of the largest in California, but the classic fried chicken dinner is still made the same way today using Mrs. Knott's recipes.

Every complete chicken dinner includes handmade biscuits, cup of soup, side salad/and or cherry rhubarb, four pieces of fried chicken with mashed potatoes smothered and a choice between corn or cabbage. For dessert: choose between Boysenberry or Apple pie. We offer other dishes such as Roasted Chicken, Specialty Salads, Salmon, and a number of appetizers. A full-service bar, serving signature boysenberry-infused cocktails, is also available.

Review summary

AI-generated from verified diner reviews
Mrs. Knott's Chicken Dinner offers a nostalgic dining experience with "excellent service" and generous portions. While some diners find the "famous fried chicken dinner" delicious, others note inconsistencies in food quality. The boysenberry pie is a highlight, and friendly staff like Anthony and Melanie enhance the visit. Parking and wait times can be challenging.

Only complaints …We did not get seated in the area reserved. The restaurant was not crowded and still understaffed or slow. The food was excellent and brought back memories of my childhood. Visiting from Ohio, I have frequented the restaurant a number of times on vacation since childhood. Mrs. Knotts’ chicken dinner did not disappoint and was very filling. My wife had the pot pie and loved it. A highlight everyone in the party had excellent boysenberry flavored cocktails. In an era of small plates and picture perfect mini meals, Mrs. Knotts’ delivered a traditional and tasty homestyle meal. My memories with family over the years came crashing back at first bite.

Famous chicken dinner - chicken was very dry & soup very salty. Not impressed with the food. Salad good but the size was very small. Chicken pot pie was alright. Service was very good though.

I loved the restaurant. It was my first time using Open Table. My party had ten people in it, and the restaurant was ready to seat us when we got there. Our server Anthony was nice, quick and efficient at handling everything we needed. Everyone in my party enjoyed their meal.

Our party of eight received excellent service, and food was quick. Half the group was from New Hampshire, and we look forward to our visit and Knott's chicken dinner meal when we visit!

Still love the nostalgia...I first ate here in 1965 and frankly the food was so much better decades ago. The service was on point but my Fried Chicken was basically inedible...Very dry and tough to the point where chewing it was impossible to get it done properly for swallowing...I tried several bites and from 3 different pieces. I would consider going here for something else to eat but it is a Chicken Dinner restaurant for heaven's sake. Sad the quality of their food product has been lowered to that level.

Our waiter seemed overwhelmed, our biscuits finally came out with the food, which we had asked for several times, food was good but the waiter seemed to be struggling, disappeared for long periods and seemed to forget about us

Excellent service by staff and waitress. Famous Fried Chicken Dinner was delicious. Seating at wooden table and wooden chairs, high ceiling, med lighting.

This is about the third time I've eaten here & I have officially decided that the chicken does not taste like the original recipe at all. Also very little meat on the chicken, and the breast meat was overcooked and tough. The potatoes seem like they were made with potato flakes, I could be wrong but they had the density of Play-Doh. My cabbage didn't have any ham in it and was a very small serving, barely filled the bowl. The apple pie & the biscuits were great! The service was great! Overall it just seems too corporate now, it doesn't have that warm homey feeling to it like it had when Mr. and Mrs. Knotts owned it. I worked there in 1977 at the Cable Car Kitchen outside of the park & would frequent the restaurant for breakfast or lunch, it's definitely not the same chicken dinner meal I enjoyed back in the day.

Where to start, it’s been about 4 years since we ate at Mrs. Knott’s Chicken dinner restaurant . The service was good and very prompt. The food was not good! Chicken was good but seemed to have a different breading on it. The portion does are much smaller. Now the gravy was watered down with no flavor, mashed potatoes used to be fluffy and creamy, now dry and lumpy. The rhubarb was very under cooked and sour tasting. The rolls were so small and only served 4 and they were dry and hard . Overall never going back!

I ordered the chicken pot pie for lunch. The crust was good and flaky, but the filling had sort of a sour taste. I ordered the boiled corn and chicken noodle soup as the sides. The soup was very thick, but tasty. The corn was fair, tough and over cooked. My friends and I decided to come here mainly for nostalgic reasons. Most of them ordered the fried chicken with mashed potatoes, which was as they remembered. I find it a little above cafeteria fare. The service was excellent, though. Our server was Anthony P according to the receipt. Honestly, there are so many good food places out there, I would opt to eat elsewhere. Portos is down the street.
