Originally from Mexico City, Chef Fernando Olea, formerly Chef of Epazote, has been enthralling diners in Santa Fe since 1991. Chef Olea creates sophisticated flavors using Old Mexico’s indigenous and culinary traditions alongside ingredients from around the world. His menu is deliberately small, featuring fresh and locally sourced produce and meats when possible.Nothing evokes the mystery of Mexican cuisine more than mole, a sauce of complex flavors that usually includes toasted and ground spices, seeds, nuts, chocolate and chile. Many mole recipes contain more than thirty ingredients and some recipes have five varieties of chile alone. Chef Olea is delighted to share his moles that include his "New Mexican Mole" that he created to commemorate Santa Fe’s 400 year anniversary in 2009. The large mural in the main dining room, was painted and presented to Chef Olea by Federico Leon De La Vega, a well- known artist from Mexico City.

I so enjoyed my time at La Boca. The variety of tapas and my favorite, the paella, are always delicious. There is always a little surprise to each dish, like a chocolate bomb with goat cheese. Add a glass of sherry and the flavors blend beautifully. The ambiance is intimate even amidst a throng of people. I like the separate spaces. It makes the rooms feel like personal dining rooms.

Good vibes, as usual. The service was excellent and very personable. The food and the menu is delicious. The new owners have said they will not change a thing and I’m very happy to hear that because we are happy with everything on the menu.

Another home run in Santa Fe! Izanami at Ten Thousand Waves (Spa & Resort) is so unlike anything else we’ve experienced. First, to get there from the car, we climbed an endless staircase—it felt like a mini-workout. Worth every step. Everything about this restaurant showcases creativity, from the hip, personable service to the menus (multiple) to the excellent kitchen. Ascher served us brilliantly and with considerable charm. His guidance was crucial to our enjoyment. For aperitifs, we enjoyed Japanese whiskies and margaritas with an Asian spin. Next, the Ahi tuna tostada appetizer was excellent, especially the fragrant, crispy tostadas (best I’ve had). For our entree, we shared a piping hot bimimbop bowl with delicious, medium rare angus beef, rice, vegetables, and an egg. The bimimbop was served with miso pastes and a very spicy red chile sauce. We also added a succulent eggplant dish to the mix. Smoked soy sauce and togarashi (Japanese seven-spice pepper mix) is a standard addition to the table. Ascher guided me through the encyclopedic sake menu with ease and his recommended selection was the perfect match for the food we ordered. Lastly, we shared a dessert of panna cotta with a tasty compote, almond shortbreads, and a hojicha sauce. My wife started out skeptical of the dessert but was blown away. Izanami rocks!

Love the food and service. We ordered the Tumbleweed salad, Ribeye and crab cake as appetizer. I will definitely order tumbleweed salad and ribeye again. Crab cake is ok. We also ordered Baker Alaska for dessert. It’s marshmallow whip that covers a large scoop of dulce de letche ice cream and a slice of cake on bottom. It’s so good!
