Bar Chelou is Pasadena’s first true neo-bistro, a casual, convivial space that is both a distillation of Chef Doug Rankin's broad gastronomic interests and a deeply personal expression of his individualistic style. 'Chelou' (French slang for ‘strange’ or ‘unexpected’) is both the name and unifying theme of the restaurant, which draws from a range of culinary traditions and service styles to create something personal, novel and fun. The restaurant is located within the Pasadena Playhouse complex. NEED TO KNOWfor wine brought into the restaurant is $30 per 750ml bottle with no limit; we do not offer corkage for wines featured on our wine list. Liquor is not permitted to be brought into the restaurant.Ample parking is available on surrounding streets and at several paid lots within a one-block radius. We recommend parking in the municipal lot directly behind the building we share with the Playhouse or at the underground lot just across the street

This place was amazing! Celebrated my girlfriend’s birthday on a Saturday. The food was beyond great! The crispy potatoes and the lamb ribs are a definite must. Drinks were also great and the staff was super friendly. I also asked for a booth for my girlfriend and they did not disappoint. Highly recommend this place.

I like this tea room. It’s a beautifully renovated space with gorgeous views to the gardens outside. We went at the perfect time of the year when all the roses were blooming. The server was nice and she was very attentive as well as the wait staff. Minor thing that needs improvement is the amount of knowledge the server had of the various teas. They should train them to have more knowledge about the ingredients of the various types of teas. She mentioned that was something she was interested in doing. it was very all enjoyable and she was very gracious with her conversation.

Going to Gus us always a special treat. The BBQ ambiance (scent) floats in the air as you exit your car from the parking lot and walk to the restaurant. The menu is extensive, the serving large, and the menu can accommodate a vegetarian (if you like BBQ salmon). It's always all good at Gus's BBQ

The restaurant designed is for sharing dishes. My friend and I agreed on everything except she had the asparagus salad and I had the crab soup. The soup was delicious!! If you like butter there was plenty on the cornbread and mashed potatoes. We will return because the staff was friendly, the food was tasty, and it was easy to park when using the valet.

the Raymond was recommended to us and it met all expectations — wonderful service, ambience and food. Easy to miss as you drive there as sign is small .Others with us are gluten sensitive and they were able to order calamari and other dishes they would not normally have been able to as the preparation was gluten free. BTW we all loved the dishes— most excellent!! Scallops were also very tasty as were the Brussel Sprouts and short ribs.
