Mediterranean
Kokkari (pronounced “Ko-Kar-ee”) is a small fishing village located on the islands of Samos in the Aegean Sea, whose name is derived from the small onions that were once produced in the nearby fields. Its fertile soil and Mediterranean climate translated into an abundance of fresh produce as well as treasured seafood and game. Legend tells that Kokkari is the site where Orion, a mighty hunter and a young man of gigantic stature and great beauty, fell in love with the daughter of the king of Chios. For the love of her, Orion forged the island for wild game and seafood to prepare elaborate banquets in celebration of their love. Today, we hope you will enjoy your own celebration as you dine at Kokkari Estiatorio on food “fit for the Gods” prepared with an Aegean palate and the style of innovative California fare.

First time in San Fran. Came on the recommendation of a friend. Food was perfect, service was warm and friendly but professional and knowledgeable. Very helpful. Everything was fresh and perfectly cooked. Loved it.

The grilled octopus was out of this world and I’d go back just for that! The Greek salad was under seasoned and the tomatoes were mushy, and we had to send one of the lamb chops back because it was very rare. Greek potatoes and saganaki were definitely impressive with the cheese still sizzling on the skillet, delicious!!

Kokkari never disappoints! This time they outdid themselves. Not only was the food excellent but the service was incredibly thoughtful with just the right balance of friendliness and distance. A standout was the fresh plump squid stuffed with feta and olives on a bed of watercress. Sublime. The coffee is the best I have tasted in ages - even the decaf. And they brought out a scoop of baklava ice cream with a candle for my friend;s birthday even though we did not order any other desserts.
The decor and atmosphere are of a class and elegance it has become all too hard to find in San Francisco or anywhere else these days.
Kokkari is a wonderful experience whether for lunch or dinner.

This was our last dinner in San Francisco before heading back to VA. The overall experience was great...food was good, service was good. Will definitely return on our next visit.

I’ll begin by saying that I love Kokkari and always look forward to my dining experience. Unfortunately, this visit offered some disappointments; the wine took 15 mins to arrive to the table, the lamb riblet’s were very fatty and the smelts were cool. My colleague felt the same about his riblets. On the other hand, the halibut and the moussaka were perfect. Give this place a try if you’ve never been. The food is generally delicious and the wine never takes as long to arrive to the table.
Cheers!

As always, very good & fun Greek-inspired food. The whole fish served deboned was the highlight. Lovely mellow Italian-American server “Raphael” was charming. Always high price, but you pay for what you get & get what you pay for, right? And this is SF...

The food was good, we expected a little bit more with the reviews being so high. The service was good, but it seemed like our server was not taking the time to understand what we were saying.

Key was our waiter. He was personable, knowledgeable, and attentive. His wine recommendations were also perfect and appreciated. The food was great as usual. Had the prawns, greek salad, ribeye, branzino and baklava. All really delicious and perfectly prepared to our liking.

Menu is quite limited and food good but not spectacular. I had moussaka which was very average. Hard to believe how hard it was to get a reservation. Maybe we ordered the wrong dishes

Old world elegance without being stuffy. Excellent staff and a very professionally run. The menu is so far beyond the ordinary-loads of items to try. Great cross section of customers. Great open pit cooked meats Highly recommend.

We shared several small plates for lunch. The menu offers a authentic variety of Greek traditional dishes, well prepared, well presented. Our waiter was a little to attentive, I believe to move the table.

I had heard wonderful things about Kokkari from friends and knew it was difficult to get a reservation, so I'm happy to say that everything met my expectations and our food exceeded my expectations. Our table selection wasn't great...too close to the door and it was quite cold outside that night. Our server was lovely, but she seemed perhaps new to the job and was a bit spacey at times. Overall the place was pretty noisy and it was difficult to carry on conversations or hear the server. There was a long line of people waiting to be seated while we were dining, and I was pleased that we didn't feel rushed to leave because we were a group of friends who hadn't seen each other in a long time. Our meals were all exceptional. I had the halibut, my friend had the lamb rotisserie special, and my other friend had the moussaka. We were all thrilled. We had 3 appetizers as well, the octopus (nice), the citrus salad (amazing) and the artichokes (lovely). Our desserts were simply incredible. Best baklava I've ever had (& a generous portion) and the flourless chocolate cake was really great too. I felt like I wanted to tell everyone I know about our amazing meal and can't wait to return.

We had the goat stew special and the butternut squash ravioli. Both were excellent! Was a bit surprised by the price of the goat stew though...$46 seemed a little steep.

Our server was Helen and she was excellent! Very knowledgeable about the food and a great personality. I will definitely ask to be sat in her section the next time we are there.
