Kokkari (pronounced “Ko-Kar-ee”) is a small fishing village located on the islands of Samos in the Aegean Sea, whose name is derived from the small onions that were once produced in the nearby fields. Its fertile soil and Mediterranean climate translated into an abundance of fresh produce as well as treasured seafood and game. Legend tells that Kokkari is the site where Orion, a mighty hunter and a young man of gigantic stature and great beauty, fell in love with the daughter of the king of Chios. For the love of her, Orion forged the island for wild game and seafood to prepare elaborate banquets in celebration of their love. Today, we hope you will enjoy your own celebration as you dine at Kokkari Estiatorio on food “fit for the Gods” prepared with an Aegean palate and the style of innovative California fare.

The Infatuation
7.8

Come to Kokkari Estiatorio in the Financial District to feel like a big shot. Maybe even throw on a suit and tie. It's a Greek temple of lamb.

Ratings 7.5-8.0:These are restaurants that are reliable, tasty, and particularly good for whatever we have deemed them “Perfect For.” Hit up a 7.7 for Date Night with confidence, as long as you don’t need the restaurant to be the most interesting thing that happens that night.

The food and service and ambience were all exceptional. The sommelier was so approachable and reasonable! Food was delicious and innovative without being pretentious. Loved the lively atmosphere, it could still enjoy conversation. Pasta dishes were over the top as was the porchetta!
A definite repeat restaurant.

We've been to Kokkari 3 times in about 4 years. This will probably be our last. It's simply not good enough or high enough quality for what they charge. Portions are skimpy, a lamb souvlaki does not even come with pita or rice, the chicken is all alone on the plate except for two potato wedges. Any neighborhood Greek restaurant in a place like NYC does better for a quarter of the price. Tables for two are mostly very cramped and too close to each other. The service is good but not outstanding and the ambiance is nice but with so many amazing restaurants in San Francisco there's not much reason to come back.

Couldn’t have had better service. The food was simply amazing. This was my third time at this restaurant, but the first time I planned ahead and made a reservation. The other times we were seated at the bar, while the food was still excellent, the seating arrangement was not ideal.

As a Greek American, I can confidently say that this is the best Greek restaurant in America ... hands down.

I would highly recommend Kokkari for a special occasion lunch or dinner. The food was amazing and service lovely. We tried four different appetizers (the pan fried cheese, dolmathes, stuffed pita, and the octopus) and they were all divine. My spouse had the lamb for his main and he said it was phenomenal. I kept it light with soup after all the appetizer fun, which tasted very fresh and bright.

It was my spouse's birthday, which I noted on our OpenTable reservation, and they brought out a special dessert at the end of our meal, which was a wonderful touch.

My only one (small) issue: our seat wasn't exactly intimate. I understand that this is a very popular restaurant but I was much closer to a woman in the couple next to us than I was to my own spouse. Occasionally it was hard to hear. Still overall a great experience. Excited to go back for another occasion.

Overall it is a very good restaurant but can be extremely noisy and it would be good to reserve some of the more quiet tables. The shghanaki and lavraki is always great and we like the galaktoboureko dessert. Cannot ger better Greek food and the overall experience is a very good one.

After waiting months to try the restaurant along with reading multitudinous amount of reviews we decided to have lunch. so we ordered the zucchini cakes as a starter, Greek salad, and the moussaka. All three dishes were very mediocre. Zucchini cakes were salty, salad was very ordinary, just some cut up tomatoes and cucumbers which were rather tasteless We waited forever for moussaka which should have been hotter and because it was probably sitting around too long before picked up by the waiter t o be served ...the bechamel sauce was overly pasty it was too bland. The restaurant is like a factory, there’s nothing really Greek or warm were inviting about the ambience. The waiter seemed flippant but attentive. The place is huge and too noisy for lunch on a Monday!
He offered the cookbook to snap a picture of the recipe which was unique.
We won’t return...

Modern flavorful Greek food with personalized service in a large Restaurant. Wife and I came here for a 5 PM Saturday evening reservation. This is a very large restaurant with several rooms, but the tables were set with sufficient space and overall the ambiance was cozy and pleasant. We were seated promptly, and the waitress was very welcoming and solicitous, and clearly wanted to be helpful. They have a full bar and a good wine list - the martini was exactly as ordered. There were a number of specials in addition to the menu, and the waitress was very helpful in describing and making suggestions. Wife opted to have a number of appetizers as dinner (grilled octopus with lemon- wonderful, grilled stuffed calamari- not so great, crispy smelts- delicious, grilled lamb riblets- wonderful, roasted carrots with feta cheese-delicious) and I opted for a special 3-pork appetizer (blood sausage-delicious, pork belly- wonderful, and another pork concoction also delicious), traditional egg-lemon soup (a bit sour, we did not quite like this), and the grilled lamb chops (this was wonderful and flavorful, I was trying to decide between this and the lamb shank- the waitress helpfully mentioned that the latter’s major space was cinnamon, which I do not like.) We shared a baklava (very nice) and Greek coffee (flavorful and muddy as expected) for dessert. As should be obvious, the service was outstanding. By the time we left, this huge restaurant was quite full and the noise level was lively, but we felt rather intimate at our table and felt we had attentive, personalized service. We will come back.

I marked the reservation as birthday and wrote "Its my girlfriend, Alisons birtnday" in the reservation note. Did not receive a birthday dessert when the two tables near us did. We were disappointed and promptly left.
