What Insiders Are Saying
Come to Kokkari Estiatorio in the Financial District to feel like a big shot. Maybe even throw on a suit and tie. It's a Greek temple of lamb.
I recently ate at Kokari again. This restaurant never disappoints. The reception staff both professional and helpful. The wait staff was well trained, and prevention and timing of the meal was superb. One member of out party had the lamb shank as usual. He never orders anything else. Another person had the moussaka which was a huge portion and delicious. I had the lamb chops from the whole lamb that was slow cooked in fireplace. It was one of the best meals I have had in years. The portions were so large that everyone took home food and no one had desert.
Amazing meal...amazing service. Wouldn’t have changed a thing.
Dining at Kokkari is sn experience! The food is always delicious, with authentic Greek dishes and delightfullly unusual seasonal ícombinations of ingredients. The service is excellent. Our waiter Raphael was very informative about the specials and was very attentive.
This restaurant goes in my top 5 of all time. I'm still thinking about the watermelon, feta, pine nut appetizer and the homemade mint chocolate chip ice cream was nothing like the mint ice cream in stores-so fresh and herbaceous that my "I don't eat ice cream" friend ate half of it. The ambiance was lovely and I've never had such a helpful, attentive, but not intrusive waiter. I had the branzino, my friend had the roast chicken, and the Greek woman I chatted with told me it's their family's favorite restaurant for every occasion of note. Next time I'm back in San Francisco, this will be my first reservation.
Seated near the door (drafty) and in a noisy area. Food was not up to the usual level of quality.
Whole fish, traditional grilled! Octopus appetizer.
Food was outstanding. Took a while for the waiter to make it to our table initially, but was very friendly and more attentive as the evening went on. Filled up on the appetizers maybe a little too much, but could not resist the pita and dips!! Great wine list as well.
Food took almost an hour to arrive. For a business lunch this was unacceptable as we had only blocked off 75 minutes and we ended up scrambling to get our meetings moved after. The food was okay - really delicious but I felt we overpaid for chicken shawarma - there was nothing special to this dish. The market fish was 52$ and didn’t even come with any sides, although it was delicious. Octopus appetizer was okay, usually I like mine a little crispier and with more salt/flavor.
Ambiance is amazing and it’s easy to see why this place is a favorite if you’re entertaining someone. However when I pay that kind of price for a business meal, I expect a higher level of service, not having to wait 20 minutes to get my order taken or get the check.
Best restaurant in the USA; lunch and dinner superb, great bar and always fun
The food and ambiance was fantastic as always. However, I was dissapointed that it took 75 minutes to bring us our entre. I asked our server about it after about 50 minutes. He made a quick hand gesture that the chef was dropping it in the plate or sprinkling something on the plate then ran off leaving me and my client alone until he plopped it down in front of us 30 minutes later. No mention of the lateness. They have comfortable seating, but 75 minutes to bring out an entre without even acknowledging it is unfortunate.
This restaurant has always been wonderful and did not disappoint!
Always great! A fairly pricey but always reliable dinner option. We had a really great waiter and were seated promptly. Even without those 2 benefits the food here is always very, very good. Every time we come here we share the octopus starter and I always regret that I shared it. I love my husband, but I don't want to share the octopus - next time we each get an order. Lamb & fish always wonderful.
A classic - always great food, great service, and great ambiance!
Kokkari is one of those fantastic, tried-and-true San Francisco restaurants. There's a reason it remains successful in a city renowned for its dining. Kokkari has it all: inviting ambience, fantastic service, delicious (Greek) food. It's a place I'll return to again and again.
I am a 'foodie' and dine out a great deal. THIS IS A VERY NICE and QUIET RESTAURANT. THE SERVICE WAS EXCELLENT. HOWEVER, the food was not to my taste except the Foie Gras was some of the best that I have ever been served - and a larger portion than usual. This restaurant is extremely quiet, the portions usually small and quite pricey. Overall, I would have rated it higher except that Indian food is not as tasty to me as more American style foods. I usually enjoy all types of seafood - but the Halibut that I chose was coated with something that I did not like.
This restaurant was recommended to us by two different people. I initially was not going to go here because the menu seemed to favor lamb dishes (of course...it is Mediterranean) which my husband doesn't like. But in the end, we did go, and it was really amazing. My husband had the rotisserie of the day which was pork. It was probably the best pork we have ever had in a restaurant. I had the branzino and my son had the salmon. Both of the fish dishes were very good. For appetizers we had the lamb meatballs which were good, and the giant beans and fried cheese, both of which were very good. Tip: They give you a generous portion of bread and olive oil after you order...don't eat it all. If you order an appetizer, the bread will probably come in useful for sopping up the sauces.
My wife and I were there, because we heard from our friends what a wonderful restaurant this is. Our experience there was Indeed wonderful. We were seated promptly. Our waiter, Johnny made great suggestions. We started with dolmathes and kalamari. Followed by 2 daily specials, Lavraki and Roti lamb. Both excellent. Finished the night with berry pudding, Greek donuts and Greek coffee. We just had the most exquisite time there. Ian the manager and Johnny made my wife and I feel like we were old friends. We definitely will return.
Lived up to its reputation which is well deserved. The food and service were excellent
Everything great....duck was unexpectedly very dry.
We really enjoyed the restaurant, the service was exceptional and the food outstanding. Everyone made us feel extra special.
Perhaps the best lamb I have ever had
Amazing as always. Best fish hands down anywhere in San Francisco
Kokkari never disappoints. It’s consistent across-the-board excellence over what seems like decades is a testament to great management. Other restaurants should study what they do. (No, I have no connection to anyone who owns it or works there.)
We requested a window table in the front for our anniversary and we ended up in the back in very uncomfortable chairs by a window blocked by huge delivery trucks. Whole fish was over cooked and mushy. Very noisy in the back, too!
Kokkari was a treat. The food was delicious, our server was amazing nformed and helpful. The restaurant is beautiful and it was just an awesome experience!!
Went with Greek friends and it was amazing. The food, the aervice, the atmosphere, all incredible.
Wonderful food and service!
The service, ambiance & food quality and flavor are unsurpassed. The restaurant itself is beautiful. However, portion size was disappointing - particularly the salads. Salad ingredients are not costly- these things should be large, plus it’s a first impression, as it is the first thing that you see/receive, which should be impressive. My issue is with value and perception. Nonetheless, overall the restaurant is excellent, extremely high quality.
The zuchinni ravioli was tasteless and needed lots of salt. Very surprised.
Awesome ! Always a favorite.
I was very disappointed with this restaurant and the service they provided.
Wonderful Greek restaurant. My husband and I enjoyed our experience!
Excellent food, service. Very loud- hard to hold a conversation. Other than that, wonderful!
Great place to eat!! The food is amazing.
Food was delicious and place was fantastic as usual.
Good for all occasions!!! Loved it!!!!!! ❤️❤️❤️
