About Il Pastaio
Gourmet Magazine calls il Pastaio "a taste of heaven," and says "the cooks in il Pastaio's kitchen have angel's hands". Los Angeles Magazine critics choice ranked it "one of the top ten new restaurants". It's no wonder this friendly neighborhood trattoria has been a favorite meeting place, satisfying locals and visiting customers with its mouthwatering pasta since opening in 1994.

Il Pastaio Ratings and Reviews
Every time I go to this trattoria I wonder why so many people gravitate to it.Food is good,(but not great), service is hurried, (they need your seat for the next guy), tables are only 4 inches apart, (there is nothing you talk about that strangers on your left and right cannot hear), and prices are astronomical.
This place is a BH mainstay always crowded could not believe at 10:00PM that we still had to wait. Amazing. But... the food is always good and the service is good. Can't beat it for a late night meal or dinner, if you can get in. Tables turn fast and the staff is professional and quick. All of the pastas are great. The salads are fresh and delicious. That is why it is always crowded. Huge martinis and great wines.!!!!
I had a reservation for 8pm and wasn't seated until 8:45! After I was seated I was disappointed to find that they had changed the menu and did not have what I was coming to the restaurant for. This is my second time at this restaurant and I will not be coming back.
It was a lovely, special experience for my friend’s birthday. When I got there I identified myself by my reservation and Benjamin, the manager, referred to me by my name. He chose a nice quiet table, just as I had requested. They did a grest job taking care of my friend’s birthday. It was an overall great experience.
The food is wonderfully prepared, the wine choices are excellent, the service is attentive and knowledgeable, and the ambience is very comfortable. We don't mind driving from our home in downtown Los Angeles just to have lunch here. Except for Santa Monica Boulevard--stay away from Santa Monica Boulevard for a long, long time!
Always a pleasure to eat at Il Pastaio. The waiters are friendly, efficient, and helpful. It's a busy and bustling place. The pasta especially is very good. I shared a Caesar salad that was fresh and delicious. The caccio e pepe was great pasta and the lemon tart finished off the dinner.
I met a friend here for lunch. We were seated outside and it was quiet enough for us to enjoy a private conversation in peace. The service was very good: attentive without being intrusive. The food was exactly as we wished: fresh and tasty, attractive and healthy , i.e. not dripping in unnecessary sauces or toppings. We enjoyed our lunch and will meet here again.
Great Italian food in a nice area. Our server was great. Much better experience than my last lunch there. That time I had a rude server that almost ruined my experience there. Only the food saved it: We had arrived to an empty restaurant on Sunday and were seated by the hostess. My friend decided to run down the street to a shop to pick up her item. The server was disgruntled that my friend had left and said it was policy not to be seated. We already had our water and bread at the table. Again, the place was stilll empty. I had to ask the hostess to smooth things over. The sever didn’t want to give me his name and said he was a manager. He lied. My friend eventually returned and the server was all smiles to her but continued to be rude to me the whole meal. He still works there. I can point him out. I love Italian food and the chefs keep bringing me back there, not the service. The servers can be snobby here.
Amazing food and location with one upitty, snooty, snobby server. Everyone and everything else was perfect. There are far too many fancy restaurants with amazing and friendly servers to have such a snooty one. If anything, she works in the wrong environment. Snooty does not belong in fancy restaurants. Perhaps, try a fast food joint. I will definitely be back but hoping not to have the same server. Great ambiance. I recommend getting something from the truffle menu and served in a cheese wheel for the best and full experience.
We dined here because this was one of the Drago brothers' eateries and we were fans of Chianti and Chianti Cucina for many years. But those venues (now closed) had Celestino Drago, the older brother, in the kitchen.
The restaurant was packed when we arrived at 9:15 p.m. on a Sunday night (the first reservations we could get aside from 4:30 was 9:30).
The waiters were delightful -- helpful and omnipresent -- and the wines by the glass list more than adequate. An Amarone by a secondary producer was $20 (as I recall) and there was a reasonable selection of wines by the glass for California whites and reds.
Black winter truffles were the special feature, so we shared the pasta with langoustines (a special of the day) and we had the veal scallopini with shaved black truffles and the broadbill. The pasta had a little too much "bite" so I surmise that it was not home made, but the sauce and the langoustines were excellent.
The veal was good and the truffles were plentiful, albeit a bit dry and lacking the pungeant aroma and flavor of really fresh truffles. The broadbill was good.
All in all a better than average meal for the price.
Food and wine were fabulous! Pumpkin tortellini did not disappoint. Both pasta dishes were same day fresh. Wait staff was wonderful and the timing between courses was well executed. Never felt rushed but never delayed either. Location is ideal for people watching, especially their sidewalk seating. Easily the very best meal of our 3-day trip.
