Located in East Village and housed in the historical Simmons Building along the Bow River, charbar is spearheaded by executive chef Jessica Pelland with the support of co-owners and Top Chef chefs Connie DeSousa and John Jackson. One of Canadas best restaurants partners with Sidewalk Citizen Bakery and Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roasters to create a collaborative and communal destination. Charbar restaurant features cuts of ultra-dry aged Alberta beef and an ocean wise seafood raw bar, that spills out onto the open air riverfront patios with views of the bow river. At its heart is a custom-made Argentine wood-fired grill honouring the art of asado and the culinary inspirations of Spain and Italy.

    We dined at the restaurant on a busy evening and, unfortunately, found the service to be quite slow. While we understand it was a high-traffic night, we couldn’t help but feel overlooked at times. We had to follow up more than once on a dish that had been ordered but never arrived, which impacted the overall flow of the meal. The food itself was decent, though a few items arrived cold, likely due to delays and coordination issues with service. Given the restaurant’s price point, we had higher expectations for both the dining experience and the level of attentiveness. Overall, we left feeling disappointed. We don’t mind paying a premium for a meal when the service and quality match the cost, but in this case, it didn’t quite meet the mark.

    Fantastic experience at dinner last night. The food was fantastic and our service was impeccable. We were dining with two kids and our server did everything he could to make everything smooth. This was our first time and we will be going back many times more.

    Loved sitting on deck…amazing food and drinks. Had the braised cabbage salad, roasted Brussels sprouts and ceviche. Delicious.

    When a business dinner becomes an elevated evening - it’s a great night at work. Sable fish was excellent, tenderloin perfect (as you might expect). The brussels were a “do not miss” and the surprise fan favourites dish was the burger! The cocktails were so unique and frankly delightful, that we started and ended with them even though it was Wine Wednesday. Making our night that much more perfect was the lovely Marnie - thank you for being such a bright light! We’ll see you again.

    I was trying to show off one of Calgary’s best restaurants to someone from out of the country. It was brutal. We ordered food, waited about 45 minutes for it to arrive and all 4 steaks were wrong. We ordered 3 x 8oz Tenderloin Steaks medium rare and 1 12oz New York Strip Steak medium well. We received 3 strip steaks and 1 sirloin which was also medium rare, not medium well. We were offered new steaks but we didn’t want to wait another 45 minutes and we didn’t want the steaks to be thrown away. The meal was $443 before tax and tip and felt we would have been better off going to another place. Not a great experience.
