Located in East Village and housed in the historical Simmons Building along the Bow River, charbar is spearheaded by executive chef Jessica Pelland with the support of co-owners and Top Chef chefs Connie DeSousa and John Jackson. One of Canadas best restaurants partners with Sidewalk Citizen Bakery and Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roasters to create a collaborative and communal destination. I’ve generally had very good experiences at Charbar but it is a higher end restaurant that is quite pricey so my expectations of the staff are also quite high. This time I was a little disappointed in the interactions I had with a few of the staff….I was made to feel like I was an inconvenience to them especially the hosts at the front of the restaurant. It didn’t really feel like there was anyone senior monitoring staff activities and ensuring that guests/patrons were being well cared for. Also, when you book here through open table the send you a code for “free parking” however the code didn’t work….and when I asked my server to let someone know it wasn’t working he advised that it is always a problem and he’s told management many times. Again, for a restaurant of this caliber I find it odd that they are ok with the customer’s experience being poor even before they actually set foot in the restaurant. No offer to cover the $10 parking fee I ended up paying and no apology. Disappointing.
I have chosen Charbar for corporate events in the past but this experience has me worried about using them in the future as I know our clients would expect better than what I experienced.

The food and service was exceptional but due to enhanced COVID restrictions we were forced to dine outside and it was just too cold to enjoy the experience. The staff did everything they could to make it as enjoyable as possible but it is hard to compete with Mother Nature and unreasonable pandemic restrictions. Too bad because the food and folks are amazing. I’ll go back when we can dine inside or when the weather warms. The patio has a great view of the Bow River.
We were 6 in our party and this was our food experience. We enjoyed the seafood platter but sadly it ended there. 4 of us ordered the skirt steak which was a feature entree. The skirt steak was very chewy, to the point you had to spit out some pieces. My wife ordered the hamburger and loved it, our other guest liked the chicken. The wine was excellent.
Oddly even though they like to feature their beef and high end aged, this is the second time we have experienced very tough beef.
I’ve eaten at Charbar several times and always an excellent dining experience. The food is awesome.
Incredible food and ambiance
Had the 8oz tenderloin, it was a typical tenderloin nothing to write home about, on the other hand the char roasted carrots was out of this world, the flavors just exploded. Actually made the meal
The building and atmosphere are beautiful. Service was also really good. The food however was nothing special.
My fiancé and I both ordered a steak, the meat on both our cuts were pretty tough and the flavour was just okay. Given the price of our dishes (around $45 a plate) I expected more. It seemed to be more in line with the $25-$30 steak at other restaurants, so not worth the price jump. I am willing to pay more if the quality is there, but we have had much better steaks at other restaurants downtown Calgary.
I would go back for the atmosphere and to try something different on the menu (not steak).

I had dinner at this restaurant Friday March 26, and I just wanted to let you know how wonderful it was. I know I can do this on Google reviews, but I prefer the direct method approach.
Firstly, we had a delightful time with our server, David. He was so knowledgeable about basically everything. He gave great recommendations for meal options and had a fluency in mixed drinks and wine selections - he knows a lot about scotch too! He was prompt but we never felt rushed. We stayed about 2 hours and it just kind of flew by.
The food was wonderful. We started with the avocado bruschetta which is incredible. I had the tri-tip cut, cooked rare with the Brussels sprouts which I was able to split with my girlfriend who is vegetarian. She had the Napa salad and we finished the meal with the panqueques for desert. All while having delicious Manhattans, well paired wine and a 15 year scotch hand picked by our server. It was fantastic.
Oh right, I forgot to mention that when our server was refilling a drink order for us, we mentioned we were celebrating my partner landing a new job. David returned with two glasses of bubbly to toast the occasion. Simply put, he was just on point the whole night. I used to work in hospitality at a luxury hotel and our experience last night reminded me how hard people work to send you off floating. It was worth every penny and in retrospect I feel bad we only tipped 20%.
Okay, so one other thing, we had a couple drinks and when we left we realized after we walked out we forgot to wear our masks exiting from our table. I think we had such a good time we managed to raise some eyebrows with that maneuver. Normally we are very prudent with safety and it just escaped our minds. Sorry if we made anyone feel uncomfortable.

Service was great, our server Shannon was very attentive, atmosphere is fine, but the place was cold. Menu is unimaginative and the food was NOT worth the price. I had the strip loin steak and it came cut for me, and was gristly. There were no potato options with the steak except fries. I had the beans, which were salty. There was no flavour in anything I ate.
My husband, however, loved his Hamburger; but we didn’t go for a $100 meal to eat a hamburger!
The general manager offered me a free dessert as consolation. No thanks.

My only suggestion to improve the experience would temp control in the restaurant, it was so chilly I had to wear my coat the whole time... minor, but more coziness that would've made it 5 star all around! LOVE CHARBAR!

This is out 4th time at Charbar. The food was great as always, yet the burger my wife ordered was poorly prepared. Lots of chunky pieces of lettuce, everything came out after the first bite! When the waiter came and asked us how the food was... we politely mentioned this and received as an answer “oh, yes...it’s a messy burger” (that was it, and then she carried on).We will definitely come back as we love the place, but that is not how you should answer a customer!

Beautiful restaurant. Chicken was very good. My daughter order a $56 tenderloin steak in Medium rare and when it arrived at table it was very rare. She asked if she could get it cooked more and the waitress said due to Covid she didn’t think she could send it back. So she ate off of everyone’s plate. My husband tried to eat it and he likes his steak more rare and he had a hard time. For the price they should have took it back or offered to redo it. Won’t be going back.

The menu is advertised as Argentine, and it is really far from being so, in addition they offer very little variety and it is expensive. The atmosphere is pleasant although it lacks a bit of cleaning, the waitress was friendly and helpful

Burger was so delicious; but needed a toothpick to hold it from sliding apart; not a bad thing.
I had the Strip Loin, done perfectly Medium Rare.
We will be back; if nothing else but for the burger.

Their ceviche was a joke, $19 for literally 3 bites, would’ve expected some better food at that price.
Google pic showed their empanada comes with 4, but guess pandemic hit them hard, it now comes with 2 only, in a two bite size each.
Their porthouse steak was the only one reasonable, but since it’s measure by oz, can’t shrink it.
Overall, paid same price dinner the following weekend and got a much better dinner, both quality and quantity + bought 2 rounds of shots (x3 each round), just incomparable.

Food was very disappointing. The menu was very small, likely due to covid. The selections were somehwat lacking. We had the beef shirt rib and it was not good. Dry and tough. The 1/2 lobster was tasty. We shared a red velvet cake for dessert and it was dry and not good. Overall, the value was lacking. I don't mind spending goos money for good food and experience. This was not good food!
