Located in the revitalized East Village and housed in the historical Simmons Building along the Bow River, charbar is spearheaded by executive chef Jessica Pelland with the support of co-owners and chefs Connie DeSousa and John Jackson. This locally-relevant and globally-inspired restaurant partners with Sidewalk Citizen Bakery and Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roasters to create a collaborative and communal destination. The restaurant features an ultra-dry aged Alberta beef display, a meandering ceviche raw bar, and riverfront and rooftop patios. At its heart is a custom-made Argentine wood-fired grill honouring the art of asado and the culinary inspirations of Spain and Italy.

Went for lunch and had the chicken sandwich, empeñadas and the beef chorizo pizza. Everything was fantastic, full of flavour and served hot. We sat outside on the riverside patio and it was a beautiful spot for a nice lunch date.
Service was great as well! We will definitely be back to try more of the menu!

Reserved a spot on the patio and called to confirm it in the day, hostess said it was all good. Showed up and the patio was full, put us inside right next to the kitchen. Service was slow, food average at best. Will not be going back.

I've been to Char Bar a number of times. I think they were perhaps just 'off' tonight... service was a bit slow and I was frankly surprised at how 'empty' the restaurant was. Food is always very good. It's certainly not cheap though!

Mother’s Day brunch

The food did not live up to expectations. While I love the ambiance, the service was not great. No coffee refills ($5 a cup), no asking if we wanted pepper on the food and the eggs Benedict was way too runny.
The sparse meat (Prosciutto? ) was so lacking it was almost non existent. It definitely did not add a level of flavor.

We booked on open table and thought we’d sit on the deck prior to our reservation. You need a reso for that too. Luckily our table was ready an hour early.
Our server was excellent. Girls at front could volunteer to be more helpful.
Our meal was amazing.

Waitress told kitchen that they could take their time with the main course after the appetizers. We were with young kids and the longer the kids waited, the crankier they got. After a 40 minute wait, we had to go and take the food home. Chicken taste better at Swiss chalet. Asado is just a steak and is better at Caesar’s.

We chose Charbar for Saturday brunch. Overall the food was great with the only issue being the chorizo sausage. Three out of our group of 7 had the Village Breakfast. The chorizo was extremely dry. We were probably the second or third table when we arrived. While our server was pleasant and courteous, our first coffee refill came after the food was served. Apparently, as we were told, the drip coffee is very slow to make. Lastly, our server was so busy chatting with other staff members that after waiting for maybe 10 minutes, I had to take my bill and card up to her at the bar.

There was a wedding reception on the second floor. Very noisy and disrupted the dining experience for everyone on the main floor. Renting out the second floor is horrible idea as the floors are open to each other and the sound travels as if they were right beside, or on top of you.

The service was excellent. Unfortunately the empanadas just seemed like “piggies in a blanket “. I will try the place for dinner some time to give it a fair review

I have been a loyal patron of char at since they opened. However, in the last 6 months or so the food has started sliding down hill. Specifically we will get extreme salty food which has been increasing to bitter over time and also burned/charred foot - completely kills the tastebuds and leaves you so disappointed because you know the food is supposed to be good.

I have been to Charbar for brunch before, which was amazing. This time was was drinks and quick small plates before a show at the National Music Centre. We ordered fresh oysters chimichurri mignonette that were fresh and delicious. We also shared the Braised Cabbage Salad with crisp puffed wild rice, it was perfectly seasoned. Amazing time.

Charbar is just WOW. It was our first time at charbar and we were extremely pleased with everything. Based on the advice from our server Desiree, we just did the share plates. The food is very creative and we recommend the empanadas, the fried yucca, the kale salad, the beet salad, the tableside ceviche and the half chicken. Service was attentive without being intrusive. We highly recommend charbar to anyone who wants to experience great food in a great atmosphere.

Our service was exceptional regarding our server. She had to excuse our wait time for our food. Then our food arrived over cooked and like warm at best. It had good flavour but over all a disappointment for the price. The wine was exceptional. My friend that had to order beer had to correct the server for her error in delivering the wrong order. Lovely atmosphere. My summation to my friends now that I have returned to St. Albert where I live is. I would give it one more chance outside on a beautiful summer day?? Maybe?? Honest review. Sorry. This was my second visit to Charbar, and once again I was delighted. There were 5 family members who all found themselves in Calgary on the same day, so we decided to celebrate over a meal. Our server Nancy was excellent and attentive and the food was absolutely delicious. We chose to order multiple small plates and share with each other (in addition to some larger menu items), and found that each plate was different enough from the others to create a very rich dining experience. The restaurant was busy, but we were able to visit quite comfortably as the noise level was just fine. We will definitely be back.

Beautiful place with lots of ambience. But my lab dish was full of gristle and didn't finish last piece. For a $37 dish I would expect a better cut of meat. Otherwise great.

Able to get a table on Saturday night which was great. Enjoyed our cocktails very much. The vegetarian options were quite good. Seemed a bit pricey but I think every place is getting that way these days. I would go back.

Nice building, great atmosphere, very uncomfortable furniture and the food was just ok, wish I would have read the reviews before going because all the folks that said “overrated” were spot on...but i guess they need to pay off their crazy expensive dishes...won’t return for the food...maybe a drink, cool spot good bartender. Disappointed overall.
