A word from The Hobbit
The Hobbit offers a 7 course prix-fixe menu Wed-Sun with one seating per evening. Cost per person is $78 (plus tax, tip & beverage). Our food is "Contemporary Continental" a reference to its encompassing many world cuisines.

We begin the evening in our wine cellar where you are handed a flute of Hobbit Champagne. Hors d'oeuvres are placed throughout the cellar, sommelier Tiffany Cox & wait staff are there to help you select wines for dinner with over 1000 labels to choose from!

Guests are then invited upstairs - you will be served a shellfish or fish first course then a fowl or light meat, followed by a salad course. After you enjoy "intermission" (visit the kitchen to speak with the chefs, take a walk, and relax on the patios).

15 minutes later guests return to their refreshed table for a flavorful sorbet palate-cleanser. The main entrée is served complete with accompanying vegetables. Dessert arrives next, along with a list of after dinner drinks and liqueurs.

Diner Reviews
  • "Having heard about the Hobbit restaurant from people who live in the area (I am from Texas) I decided to book a reservation for a birthday celebration. What you see and read on their website is what you can expect except for one item. The ambiance of the restaurant was quiet and tastefully decorated. Clearly the restaurant was converted from an old house, but regardless, the conversion was well done. My party arrived just after 6:30PM and left at 11PM. This is not the sit, eat, and run dinning experience which is why I wanted to try it out. The various courses were well prepared and well presented. Since the menu changes all the time just make sure you look on the website for what is being served for any night you wish to go. "

  • "We had very high expectations based on reviews read online. We were a group of 4, 3 of us didn't drink wine, for various reasons personal to our group. With only one wine drinker we did not want to purchase a bottle of wine, but rather order by the glass. This was just not acceptable to the staff. They continued to push and try and sell sell sell us a bottle of wine. It was very uncomfortable telling the pushy server no, several times. Each table had assigned to it several "server helpers" but none of them are allowed to speak. It was creepy and awkward. The food was not bad, nothing like the website would want you to believe, and the portions are so tiny, I guess they count on you filling up on wine to satisfy your appetite. "

  • "A very fine dining experience. A little expensive."

  • "This place went above and beyond my expectations. I was in town visiting my boyfriend, as we do the long distance thing, and knowing my love for all things Tolkien and my appreciation for fine dining he decided to take me there. I loved how dinner was broken up into acts so that I had plenty of time to digest and was able to enjoy each course, although their wine cellar was amazing. The staff was very courteous and accommodating and I liked how intimate the dinner was with strangers, as they only serve 20-25 people at night keeping the noise to a minimum. The patio was great and the bar upstairs was stocked with great liquor. Overall, we had a great time and will be going back again soon!"

  • "While the food was delicious, we got there at 6:30 with no place to sit or stand. You could not move around the wine cellar and the noise in the dinning room was headache worthy. The service was just fair. They never asked our non wine drinkers if they wanted anything. On the $45 per person wine flight, we were not offered a choice where the menu indicated we had one. The food was not described at any point. We were not offered coffee. It felt like a dinner banquet. Our expectations were much higher for the 5 star prices."

  • "You go to The Hobbit for good food and a fabulous experience. I have been about 5 times in the past 10 years and the appitizers have always been the same. I don't think that is necessarily a bad thing. The food is solid, not inventive. There are no foams or spheres. You will find classic dishes with old school charm, a great wine cellar, and an amazing evening."

  • "We've thought about coming here for several years and finally made the reservation. So impressed! I've done a lot of traveling and you have to go to Paris, or NY/SF, or even Tuscany to enjoy a meal of this quality, never thought I'd find it in Orange just 2 blocks from my house. The wine cellar is world class, the menu sublime, execution divine, the service impeccable. It's not overpriced at all for what you get. First Class all the way. Can hardly wait for an excuse to go again...beef wellington on the menu sounds reason enough to me."

  • "What an amazing dining experience we had at The Hobbit!! I say experience because that is what it is; this is not simply going out to dinner. Your evening begins around 6:30 and doesn't end until around 10:30. You are wined and dined to the fullest here and everyone from your very first greeting is incredibly friendly. Mind you, this is not a bargain evening out; it is expensive, but for a special celebration it is completely worth every penny!!"

  • "My husband and I celebrated our 4 year wedding anniversary at The Hobbit. We dressed up in our finest and felt like we were special guests. We knew everyone had special treatment here, we were made to feel like guests of honor. The chef prepared an excellent menu and was kind enough to share tips with us on how he prepared some of the meals. The servers were such a pleasure to talk to and knew how to start up a fun conversation. Intermission was a great way to get to know some of the others dining that evening, it was such a great experience. We would love to return again for another special event. Thank you to all at The Hobbit!"

  • "We have been to the Hobbit several times over the past 25+ years. We made reservations several months in advance and always looked forward to a special evening of great food, superb service and ambiance. Unfortunately, this time did not measure up. With the exception of the steak tartar served buffet style in the wine cellar, no course was wonderful. Even in the wine cellar, the "bread" served with the tartar was 1/2 inch thick melba toast. The fish appetizer was bland. The rolls were overcooked. The salad dressing was flavorless. Tenderloin was perfectly cooked medium rare, but not exceptional. Service was ok but not personal. An expensive evening for just ok food. We will return because we still have many very good memories."

  • "We went here to celebrate and had a splendid time. The food was fantastic, service wonderful, and ambiance beautiful. My only complaint was that it took us 2 weeks to get reservations, but it was well worth the wait!"

  • "We have been to this restaurant three times in the past 7 months for various special occasions. The food and service is always exquisite and compliment the entire experience. We always leave full and satisfied yet still wanting more and trying to find another special occasion or "excuse" to enjoy a fine dining treat such as the Hobbit. We will be back!!!!!"

  • "My husband and I flew down to Orange County to take my in-laws out to a special dinner. The Hobbit seemed like the perfect place. However, I was so disappointed. Dinner took almost 4 hours, the wine cellar where we started out was way too crowed which made it hard to get to the appetizers. The food was brought out by cart with cafeteria type covers over the food..... Our entree was not tasty and was not hot enough... It is a unique idea in dining and could have been a wonderful time but it certainly isn't worth $400 plus it cost."

  • "The Hobbit is our favorite special occasion restaurant. You can tell the chef uses the best ingredients and seasons the food properly. I never have to add salt or pepper to any of his dishes. The service rivals some of the best Michelin star restaurants we've dined at in the U.S. and Europe. The dining room we were seated in was recently updated and it has an more elegant look and feel than before."

  • "I've been wanting to dine at the Hobbit for years! I was not disappointed, what a dining experience! It was fun starting in the cellar, I didn't want to leave & that was the beginning! Great wine, fantastic food prepared to perfection! I'll be back"

  • "This was our first visit to The Hobbit but not our last. This old converted house seems an unlikely spot for a restaurant, but The Hobbit makes it work. The upstairs bedrooms are converted to accommodate comfortable seating for cocktails and conversing with other diners. Then everyone is guided to the basement to peruse the wine cellar for a dinner choice, while tasting the amazing hors d'oeuvres and sipping champagne. We could have dined on the hors d'oeuvres all night! The elegant dining area is divided into two rooms, which keeps the noise level low. The several courses are very artistic as well as delicious. I'm not a dessert person, but it was so pretty and delicious I ate every bite. The service staff is young, friendly and attentive."

  • "We love our evenings at the Hobbit. It's a very special place. From delicious champagne and appetizers in the basement-to each course of the meal-it is wonderful. Service is great. Food is always a treat. And, it makes for a very romantic evening for me and my husband."

  • "We have never experienced anything like The Hobbit before! I recommend arriving shortly after 6pm to enjoy a beverage at the bar before other guests arrive. Great atmosphere and the bar & cellar are conducive to socializing with other guests. I highly recommend the Chef's wine pairing! They do have a stunning wine selection, but I can't describe how well the wine paired with each dish. Your palate will be pleasantly surprised! Spectacular food, seriously. Everything we ate was elegant & fine quality. Serious compliments to the Chef; the passion & care that goes in to creating each dish is obvious. And the service staff did a fantastic job of making us feel as though we could've been the only ones in the dining room!"

  • "The Hobbit delivers what they promise: A unique dining experience. From start to finish, the Hobbit gives diners a pleasurable journey in gastronomy. While I don't think I was blown away by any of the dishes served throughout the 6 course meal, I can attest to the fact that none disappointed. The chefs prepare classical dishes with a few innovations here and there, but all in all, solid execution. If you are looking for a romantic evening for a special occasion, this is a great option. The price tag is on the higher side, but there is no shortage in the amount of food you get. Most tasting menus give you smaller portions, but these seemed to be more than healthy servings."

  • "Clearly one of the best restaurants in Orange County. This place has not changed much over the years. Always great service. Always an excellent selection of wines. Always excellent food. A really great choice for that special occasion or just when you want to feel special."

  • "Food was OK, although it has been better in the past. Service was terrible. The head chef is rude and completely ruined our experience. We have been here numerous times and often recommend it to friends. Not only will we not be returning, but we also will be letting everyone know to stay clear. I can get food just as good with MUCH better service at a multitude of places."

  • "You start out in the wine cellar with their champagne and appetizers. Which were very good. Then we went back upstairs for dinner. The dinning room is very old, not updated, the service is great and everyone is very nice. The food was just good. I expected it to be out of this world for the price. It was disappointing. But the worst of all is that we were seated under the air conditioner. When I first complained, they were very nice turned it off and brought me a cashmere pashmina. But you sit there almost 3 hours and as the night went on it got colder and colder. My boyfriend never is cold and he was freezing. What makes me mad is that I woke up the next morning with a cold! Also, I e-mailed them and never heard back from them!"

  • "The restaurant was a treasure and a delight. The staff was very knowledgable and attentive. The chef was a delight. The appetizers were beyond delicious and none of us will be able to eat chocolate lave cake from anywhere else ever again!!!"

  • "The service and ambiance was wonderful. However, I was a bit disappointed by the food, which surprised me! I haven't been to the Hobbit for about 20 years and was truly looking forward to a great food experience like the one embedded in my memory. Alas, that was not the case. First course: a scallop atop an heavily rosemary-seasoned sauce that completely took away from the delicate scallop. Another course had sliced duck breast, which was tasty. The salad was delicious. My main course was swordfish, which I ordered cooked medium rare. It arrived well done, dry and tasteless atop lentils, also tasteless. My friends had New York steaks, which also arrived overcooked. The dessert was to die for! Ambivalent describes my experience!"

  • "We had a great birthday dinner for my boyfriend at the Hobbit recently. We enjoyed the 3 course meal presentation in 3 Acts. Especially nice was the reception in the wine cellar where we chose our wine for the evening. We chose a nice red zinfandel to go with our meal that consisted of seafood and beef. There were many appetizers there so we just grazed. Our main course was cote de boeuf, wonderful and tender accompanied by crispy shallots. Our dessert was chocolate lava cake. I had mentioned on OpenTable that it was my boyfriend's birthday and they brought a goblet of chocolate morsels on top of a dollop of whipped creme . Excellent service and beautiful presentation. WIll most definitely come again."

  • "I went to the Hobbit for the first time and was told that it will be quite an experience. Well, it turned out that it was a 4-hour experience. There was only one seating - at 7 pm. All the guests are first shown to the cellar for champagne and hors d'oeuvres - more than 10 in the selection. The hors d'oeuvres were outstanding. The guests can choose any wine in the cellar to be server at their dinner and you get to mingle with the other guests. 40 minutes later, they announced that dinner is ready and showed us to our private table. We chose the wine pair with the prix fixe menu and both the food and the wine were very good. Over all, we enjoyed our evening out at the Hobbit."

  • "We have been dinning at the Hobbit since 1997 and have not had the chance to go for the past couple of years until last night for their special New Years Eve Dinner. We were so very pleased with everything....truly a dining experience. (We have not been out to dinner on NYE because it is usually a disappointing experience but not at the Hobbit.) The pace is leisurely and the food is innovative and tasty. 6 courses which includes complementary champaign and appetizers while selecting wine in the cellar. It was nice to see that this restaurant has held its quality over the years. The service was outstanding and friendly I highly recommend The Hobbit especially for special occasions."

  • "This place was an amazing! The only reason I rated service 3 was although all the staff was incredible was hoping for a more personal experience with the waiter(s) that were serving the tables for the dining portion of the evening. And the only reason for a 4 on the food was because I was expecting a filet mignon more on the lines of a steak from Mastro's or Morton's."

  • "The Hobbit is more than just a delicious six course meal. You start your evening upstairs, where you can enjoy a cocktail, and meet other guests. Then, you go down to the wine cellar for unlimited champagne and tasty bite sized treats. You can also talk to the sommeliers about wine pairings, as well as the executive chef. Finally, you adjourn to the dinning area for several delightful courses. Always enjoyable."

  • "We have been going there occasionally for most of 40 years. Food is always great, and the wine cellar is awe inspiring. But……. They assume everyone has exactly the same taste buds as the chef, and therefore we should enjoy what he has prepared without any change. I happen to like a bit more salt, and some pepper on a salad. they were not available. The wine cellar is incredible, if you enjoy staring at $1100 bottles of wine. Okay wines were delicious also, at only $75 a bottle. Sadly, the owner has a "I know better" attitude about Temecula vineyards, and won't carry any of them. That's my favorite regions for certain kinds of wine."
