Mark Kiffin, celebrated chef, owner, and author of the Compound Restaurant, has won the James Beard Foundation award as one of America's Best Chefs. The Compound is Santa Fe's premier restaurant with Chef Kiffin's acclaimed seasonal Contemporary American cuisine derived from Santa Fe's rich heritage of regional and Mediterranean influences. The New York Times, Gourmet magazine, The Wall Street Journal and Wine Spectator have all selected the Compound as Santa Fe's favorite. Equally impressive is the attentive, highly knowledgeable and friendly staff.
Chef Kiffin's menus focus on the exclusive changes in seasons such as hearty braised dishes in the fall and winter using apples, pears and cider from local harvests, osso bucco and porcini risotto while in spring and summer feature fresh local vegetables and naturally raised organic lamb and delectable strawberries.

  • "My wife and I took my parents to an amazing dinner last week. I had the crab cake which was fantastic, best one I've ever had. My wife had the scallops and refused to share more than a bite. Both my parents were floored with the beautiful dining room, our attentive servers and the knowledgable manager Walter, who knows his wines. I will go back to this place again and again because we were looking for someplace special and got what we were looking for. Can't say enough positive things about the food. Really was fantastic."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our meal. We ordered a bottle of Belle Glos, one of my favorite Pinot Noirs and settled in for a night of great service, food and atmosphere. The hostess was friendly and Walter, the Maitre'd was charming and made us feel very welcome. The plating was beautiful, the food was delicious and our server was outstanding. Can't say enough nice things about this wonderful Santa Fe gem!"

Sweetbreads and foie gras was rich and flavorful, crab cake was moist, dense, and generous portioned, and the beef cheek was falling-apart tender and delicious. We had cocktails in the bar prior to dinner, great wine with the meal. We were pleased in every way: outstanding food, perfect service, a total top shelf experience. Nice to hear my husband say "Best birthday ever". We will return...great for a special occasion."

  • "After almost 4 decades of coming to this almost-home restaurant, we still find it sensational! The crab-cakes were to die for -- flavorful and spicy yet delicate, the squash risotto was delicious with poached salmon, and the beef cheek was fork tender. For dessert, chocolate cake and clafoutis (our first) were the perfect ending of a delightful meal. Walter, The Compound Manager, was welcoming and all the wait staff were pleasant yet unobtrusive. It was a wonderful evening under the sun-face in our longtime favorite Santa Fe flagship restaurant. We eagerly look forward to many happy returns!"

  • "It was okay but the service left us a bit wanting. For instance, we ordered the special mushroom dish and side of mac & cheese as appetizers. Well enough. But with four people we would have expected some extra small plates so we could each serve a little on the plate. Instead we used our bread plates. Then, when the server came to bus the appetizer plates she too the used silverware but did not replace it and left the bread plates instead of replacing them. When my dinner came I had no silverware. Then one guest ordered another glass of wine which didn't come until he was finished with his dinner. So it was okay but Germonimos down the street iw much better."

  • "For such a highly rated restaurant, my wife and I were disappointed. While all of our food was very delicious, we found the prices to be exorbitant and the serving size to be modest to be generous. We enjoyed Valentine's Day dinner at this restaurant and both of us ordered the rack of lamb special. To say that "rack of lamb" was misleading would be an understatement since our dinner consisted of a single lamb chop served over a braised leg of lamb base. While the food was very good, to characterize this menu item as a "rack of lamb" was very misleading. Perhaps a better description would have been a "single lamb chop served over a ..." Tuna tartare was delicious and service was good for a busy holiday dinner."

  • "First time at The Compound. Definitely recommend. We were seated after about 10 minutes and we were about 15 minutes early for our reservation. The hostess and wait staff were lovely and very attentive. The food was wonderful. I recommend the scallops for a first course. I would go back without hesitation. The food was outstanding and eclectic. I saw a lot of mixed reviews tor this restaurant and was a little worried. Our experience was quite different then all of the "not so great" reviews. Go experience it for yourself."

  • "A beautiful place with a warm, cozy atmosphere. We had a cocktail, an appetizer of foie gras, lobster and crab salad, beef medalions, wine, and clafoutis for dessert. All were excellent except for the lobster and crab salad -- the fish was either not fresh or perhaps just bad. The menu lacks imagination -- it's primarily salads, hamburger, pastrami sandwich, salmon -- the usual suspects. Still, we had a good time"

  • "We chose Santa Fe for Christmas this year and the Compound was suggested to us. Being on Canyon Road we were able to enjoy the Farolito experience on Canyon Road before and after dinner. Dinner was incredible. You would think since it was Christmas Eve the food and service would suffer. Not so. Both our meals were excellent in every way. The service was first rate. And the view at our table was exquisite. We looked out onto a patio covered in snow that was all lit up. So magical and romantic."

  • "We have been going to the Compound for years whenever we visit Santa Fe. I think it is resting on it's laurels a bit. The food is fair not great and that was the most noticeable difference. We ate there twice over in 4 nites. Food a little better first nite; but we had a very abrupt and un friendly waiter named Hector. He was almost comical is his abrasive attitude. Walter the Maitre was great. Happily we did not have him as our server the second time. We had Reggie who was great. Food was not good however. Terrible Tartare. Oh well, hopefully notices like this will help get them back on track."

  • "We had had a wonderful lunch during the 2013 Holiday season, but this year, they really fell short. Our waiter was pleasant, but young and inexperienced. Service was incredibly slow and the menu poorly described. The "made to order mushroom soup" was without depth or flavor; certainly not worth the 40 minutes we waited after ordering. The quail was dry and the stuffing was oddly tomato flavored and gooey, while the fig sauce was gummy and overly sweet. My friend (who is Jewish) ordered the scallops, asking fora description before ordering. When they arrived with ham, she was disappointed. The waiter had not mentioned this component. They came back from the kitchen within 5 minutes, but clearly had had simply been replayed. Not appropriate."

On this occasion we were seated way in the back near the kitchen, music was blaring loudly (which we asked to turn down, and it thankfully was) and, most irritating of all, another patron nearby was talking the whole time on his cell phone...trying to impress somebody, mainly himself. Be choosy where you are seated at the Compound - front room is best, in my opinion. Also, quite expensive...$100 pp, all-in - food, drink, tax, tip - and it is good, but not just great. Would recommend going to the Compound for lunch - not dinner."
