Mark Kiffin, celebrated chef, owner, and author of the Compound Restaurant, has won the James Beard Foundation award as one of America's Best Chefs. The Compound is Santa Fe's premier restaurant with Chef Kiffin's acclaimed seasonal Contemporary American cuisine derived from Santa Fe's rich heritage of regional and Mediterranean influences. The New York Times, Gourmet magazine, The Wall Street Journal and Wine Spectator have all selected the Compound as Santa Fe's favorite. Equally impressive is the attentive, highly knowledgeable and friendly staff.
Chef Kiffin's menus focus on the exclusive changes in seasons such as hearty braised dishes in the fall and winter using apples, pears and cider from local harvests, osso bucco and porcini risotto while in spring and summer feature fresh local vegetables and naturally raised organic lamb and delectable strawberries.

The service was excellent, and we each were very pleased with the food. At one point when it was rushed, we saw the manager himself bus tables-true commitment to service."

  • "It was our first choice for a birthday celebration. Extensive wine list is more affordable by the bottle, which was fine for our party of four. Specialty cocktails and the Summer menu were a feast for the eyes and more than satisfying in the tummy. Between the four of us we had tuna tartare, shrimp scampit, soft shell crab, lamb, veal, salmon, beef tenderloin, truffle mac and cheese, onion rings, the apricot tart, liquid chocolate cake, and watermelon sorbet... Every bite was amazing! Meat portions were generous; I had enough veal to share with everyone at the table and left feeling full and satisfied. The staff was thoughtful enough to write out "Happy Birthday" in chocolate on the guest of honor's dessert plate. I highly recommend."

  • "The Compound has been one of our go to favorites for years. Some constructive feedback from this trip are: one, train the hostess. She needs to lose the attitude or find another spot away from your customers. Two, the lobster in the salad was crunchy, and that was caused by the ice crystals imbedded in the claw. Both of these items are minor, but one must remember the details to remain remarkable. In summary, The Compound is still one of our go to restaurants."

  • "This is a nice restaurant but very noisy when busy, as it was during our visit. We were also seated near the doorway where the servers pass through to reach all of the other tables, so it was like Grand Central Station. The service was excellent, and the food very good. It is pricey, but we expected that because of the reputation of the chef and the location of the restaurant off Canyon Road. Ask for a table away from the path of the servers and you will enjoy your meal more in peace."

  • "We have dined at the Compound before and had a lovely experience. However, we had an extremely poor experience this time due to the extreme arrogance of our waiter. My husband ordered a veal chop medium rare and it came well done. He asked for another one and it came raw in the center. As we were leaving, the waiter approached us and in a loud voice in the middle of the restaurant accused us of leaving a $19 tip which was not true. He forgot about an extra $100 we had given him and after quite an embarrassing exchange, realizing his mistake, grumbled an apology. We will never return to the Compound."

No one came to our table for a good 10 minutes. Ordered an appetizer and a salad.....brought both at the same time.....and it was the wrong salad. Charged $30. for a chicken breast that goes for $17 at lunch. And the final insult.....they charged me twice for one bottle of wine. Will never go again!"

  • "We had lunch at the Compound with an out of town guest last week. The redo of the walls and furniture looks great. The ambience is still the same, elegant and arty. I love the architecture of the building - each room and the patio all have their own special feel. Service is impeccable. Food is delicious as always. We enjoyed the stacked salad, salmon with risotto, and polenta with wild mushrooms. We were tempted by the strawberry shortcake, a favorite summer dessert at the Compound, but were too full from our lunch entrees. The Compound is a classic."

We ordered our usual sweetbreads, and that delicacy that is illegal in California, as our first course. Then we asked to share the house special steak as out main course. The kitchen did beautiful job of spiting the meal for us without our asking. We will always look forward to dining at The Compound whenever we are in Santa Fe."

  • "I am a native Santa Fean, living here for my entire life. I have dined at almost every one of the restaurants here in Santa Fe and the Compound Restaurant has consistently served the best food here in Santa Fe. The service was professional which we enjoyed. I had the Grilled Natural Reserve Angus Beef Tenderloin which is the most tender steaks I ever had and the sauce was phenomenal. from first bite I was experiencing something that was great. My wife had the Organic Scottish Salmon and she thinks that it is the best salmon she has ever had, but next time she will have the Beef Tenderloin. Our total bill came to $155.00 with tip and one glass of wine. Since this meal was so exceptional it was a great value for us"

  • "Food is generally very good, although cooked fish is too often sub-par. Halibut was overcooked, despite our request that it be cooked less than the chef's "medium." (On several previous occasions, light fish has been served with inappropriately heavy brown sauces.) Tuna tartare was excellent as usual. Wine list is well organized, somewhat heavy on expensive wines; we had a nice generic bourgogne blanc for $50. Ambiance is lovely, unless there are loud-talking tables."

  • "The best thing about this place was the ambience. The food was not bad. I had the chanterelle and egg appetizer, which was flavorful. Strong balsamic taste, but very little chanterelle. The egg was cooked soft but I thought it was a little overcooked, in the sense that very little yolk came out when you sliced it. For the main course, I had the halibut. Everything on the plate was good except for the halibut. The sides and sauce were all done well, but the fish was overcooked. It dried out a bit and I wished I had a better piece of fish. So if you go out to this restaurant, know that you are getting a great ambience. The food is good enough for a romantic night out but maybe it's not a place just for food or for foodies."

  • "This is a great restaurant on Canyon Road in Santa Fe. It is in a relatively secluded location with plenty of parking. The outdoor dining is delightful and very comfortable.But, best of all is the food. Three of us had the Duck and we all agreed that it was teriffic, almost to die for. We go to Santa Fe often and never tire of the Compound. I think you will love the food and ambiance as much as my wife and I do."

My hamburger (I know . . . you are thinking . . . hamburger??? ) . . . but honestly, I am impressed when a restaurant can transform the mundane (burger, fries, soup, etc.) into an unbelievable experience. . . . I have to say . . . this is the best burger I have ever eaten."

Our waiter gave the price of the special but sadly this does not seem to be the general policy since I overheard a waiter at the next table fail to state the price of the special. We have experienced this attempt to deceive customers in the past at The Compound; in this case the special was chanterelle mushrooms at $25."

  • "Arrived with my wife for lunch reservation on time at noon. Asked to sit on the patio, which was virtually empty. Told it was fully reserved. Over next 40 minutes, two of eight open patio 2/4 tops were seated. Thought it might be our casual attire until the guy with "STP" t-shirt and NASCAR hat got seated on the patio. Order was taken immediately with wine. Food was brought out in three minutes. Local "favorite" chicken schnitzel was oily and undercooked. Twenty-five minutes after arriving, we had finished eating. Inside and out still 3/4 empty. We lingered 15-20 more minutes, watching the 2/3 empty patio."

  • "Have been here twice in the last two weeks. My husband and I usually split dishes to control portions. Both times we split the TunaTartare and their special tenderloin- a glorious 8 oz total-giving each of us 4 oz with a wonderful sauce and tiny roast potatoes and carrots. The Tuna Tartare was delectable. We also ordered some Chantrelle mushrooms that were a specialty item. Great on the tenderloin. We had a nice Spanish Ribera del Duro wine. I honestly did not care for the watermelon sorbet we chose- just tasted like watermelon ice. Overall, however, have been coming here off and on since the early 80's when we visit and think it is a very special place. Best restaurant setting of all--and you can hear each other talk!! Very romantic."

  • "The Compound lived up to the negative reviews. Took an hour for the waiter to take our order. It was clearly short staffed and the server had too many tables. It was clear the manager was not on it nor helping with the chaos. All the restaurant employees were running around frantically and making comments, "like, Oh, God" as they were stressed. There was no attention to our needs or to make it a pleasant dining experience. The soup and tuna tartar was fantastic. The steak however was over sauced and salty. It had a Foie Gras Hollandaise sauce. It all tasted like cheap A1 sauce. For the price i paid for that meal, I expect the management to be on it with the staff and to make it smooth and not feel like you eating at a cheap diner."
