Diner Reviews
  • "Food was excellent with creative presentation Server was attentive and sought answers from the Chef when necessary"

  • "Rouge has been a "go to" place for us routinely.Everything is simply very good!!"

  • "A simply delicious experience! Every dish was presented perfectly, and each offered a unique blend of different flavors. The seared tuna appetizer was wonderful, and I absolutely could not get enough of the lentil mixture that came with my salmon (even though the salmon itself was cooked exactly to my liking). My lemon cake dessert was to die for. I love Rouge - it was my first visit and I will go again. The on-site garden promotes a sustainable and local food initiative, and the preservation of the Cross house provides the community with the heritage and history that is so important to remember. Sitting outside under the tent, overlooking the aged trees, it's almost like visiting a country establishment."

  • "Very relaxing outdoor garden atmosphere 'under the tent'. Lovely historic home. The duck was fantastic outshined the other entrees."

  • "Some things are right on the money and some are not. Service was good but no where near exceptional. Food was good but not rave worthy and the garden needs a proper gardener."

  • "Rouge has been a "go-to" dinner spot for my wife and I, usually for our anniversary. This year, we went for her birthday. As usual, we had the tasting menu. The kitchen never fails to put together a number of tasty and interesting courses, with fresh seasonal ingredients. Being that it was summer, many of the ingredients were from their own garden. And the optional wine pairings always show a lot of insight. On a more practical level, the portion sizes seem perfect, never too full or hungry after 5 courses plus. Dining at Rouge in the summer is extra special as you can eat in the tent in the garden. It is very quiet and tranquil to stroll around the gardens between courses. Finally, the service is warm and professional."

  • "My wife and I visited this restaurant for our 9 year anniversary. I had looked at a bunch of different restaurant reviews before deciding on this place and it was the perfect choice. We dined in their outside patio which was covered by a tent and overlooked their garden. We decided to go all out and get the Chef's tasting menu, which was $110/each, but for 3 hours of great dinning you can't complain. The food itself was exceptional, except for one of the six course meal (was just not our taste). I would recommend this to anyone wanting a great, relaxing, and romantic night out."

  • "Great flavour combinations on the tasting menu. Each course was well presented and delicious."

  • "We enjoy visiting Rouge in the summer and sitting outside overlooking the beautiful gardens. We enjoyed the tasting menu and standard wine pairings, all of which was fabulous as usual. The service is outstanding and it is truly a great evening out. We were there for over 3 hours. The courses are served at a perfect pace and it is a more of an event than simply a meal out."

  • "The food was exceptional and the service was impeccable. Higly recommend it!!!"

  • "Had the tasting menu and totally enjoyed the taste and Aldo that the chef came out on one course to explain what we were having and what was in it. Very enjoyable and the timing of The courses was perfect"

  • "Exceptional service, superb wine selection and beautifully prepared food. Loved that the majority of offerings were local and sustainable, most of the produce comes right from the garden in the back yard. The historical house set a lovely scene and it's next to the river, so you can take a romantic. Will definitely be back."

  • "We liked the restaurant in general, but we probably wouldn't go back there. The food was good, but something just didn't work (probably a combination of the ingredients). I guess it's just was our expectation. We expected something more from this restaurant and we didn't get what we expected from the 4 diamond restaurant (http://news-releases.ama.ab.ca/releases/ama-announces-albertas-diamonds-in-hotels-and-dining). The service was good and the ambience too. Nice restaurant, but a little bit overpriced and overrated."

  • "My spouse and I had dinner at Rouge, on Friday. We had beautiful weather and were seated on under a canopy near the garden... it was perfect. We are vegetarian and since the Rouge menu is French cuisine, there are few vegetarian options which we were prepared for. After letting our waiter know, he spoke with the Chef who was happy to create a vegetarian dish, for us! We chose a bottle of Kettle Valley's Old Main Red as we had recently been in Naramata, BC and had not made it to the Kettle Valley winery. To start: A cheese selection which included a gouda, blue cheese, and aged cheddar with chutney and candied walnuts. Entree: Fresh garden veggies and legumes over lentils with a sunflower glaze and hazelnuts. Beautiful."

  • "In this charming setting, a warm and cheerful reception is just the beginning of your pampered guest experience. Service is caring, knowledgable and professional - the obvious result of a well-coordinated team. But, best of all, are the culinary creations which combine fresh delicious flavours in beautiful presentations."

  • "Been to Rouge maybe 15 times over the last 8 years.....what is happening?? Poor service, poor food....not at all like it used to be. very disappointing."

  • "Very strategic spot with history and beautiful scenery. I just think that with a little investment its beauty can be enhanced for a better feel."
    Dined on 6/25/2014
  • "service was kind and nice but far from professional. food is well prepared and at high level in terms of dish presentation. however the risotto was way too salty and not at the level of the reatsurant. elk carpaccio was amazing and foie gra was well prepared. overall is a bit pricey."

  • "My husband and I dined here for the first time & were well pleased with the food we ordered in terms of quantity, quality and presentation. It was to be a romantic dinner experience in an iconic and well-reviewed restaurant before going to a concert. We left very satisfied and would definitely eat there again and recommend it to others. The only issue we had, if you could call it that, was that the server did not seem to be as knowledgeable about some of the fine details of the menu and when we asked a couple of questions he could not specifically answer them. Otherwise, it was a real treat..."

  • "We had a special dinner here & it was excellent from the moment they took our coats at the front desk to the meal & wine selection times, we thought it was outstanding overall. The food presentation & taste was exceptional. The Wagyu beef was out of this world; melted in your mouth. Wow!! Wine service was great & they kept it at a reasonable level in our glasses (never ran dry). Gave us a nice suggestion for our second bottle. The dessert (clafoutis) was a bit of a disappointment as we thought it should have been cooked longer as it appeared to be underdone however, it did taste very good."

  • "We went to Rouge for lunch and it was a great disappointment. The homemade bread sticks were so hard I thought I had chipped a tooth. The Lobster bisque was very bland and my Halibut Cakes tasted like a ball of mashed potato. My husband's smoked brisket was good but without enough sauce to combat the dryness. Overall it was a very poor dining experience, and I won't be recommending this restaurant to anyone."

  • "My wife and I keep a list of the best restaurant experiences we've ever had together. Some examples for comparison: le Saint Amour in Quebec, Irene's in New Orleans. We've never even come close to putting a Calgary restaurant on the list... and then we finally got around to Rouge. It's far and away the best restaurant in town, especially since it's only a bit more expensive than the trendy B+ places that litter the downtown core. We had a great time and look forward to going back."

  • "Was our anniversary dinner. We experienced the chefs choice for our meal and it was fantastic. Our wine pairing was wonderful as well. Our waiter was great and the atmosphere for our anniversary dinner was exceptional."

  • "One of my favourite things to do in the summer in Calgary is to have lunch in the garden at Rouge. I love watching the plants grow and I wonder which little tidbit from that very garden will end up on my plate. I'm always surprised and delighted in the creative food and medley of flavours The hangar stead and onion rings with fresh salad is one of the best things to eat in Calgary for lunch."

  • "A wonderful spot and that does not disappoint. The prices seems to have gone up a little over the last year and the wine list could you a few more selection at the lower end but overall it is just a fantastic evening out for a special event."

  • "My wife and I enjoyed a lovely lunch here on a bright sunny day. The grounds offered an idyllic floral experience to accompany our meal. The service was excellent without being pretentious or imposing. We were left to enjoy the experience at our leisure..no hint of urging us to move on! Most were wearing suits or jackets, however this is not a requirement. Ladies were tastefully dressed as befitting the surroundings. Personally, I sported slacks and shirt and did not feel out of place. I would not wear shorts here..not in keeping and I wouldn't want to see them either. Snooty? Not really..it's nice to dress up and strut now and then...many places in town to slum."

  • "A group of four of us had a lovely meal at Rouge recently. The atmosphere of small rooms in an old house makes for a casual, and low-keyed feel, although the food is truly outstanding and not low key at all! Service is smooth and professional. The tuna tartar was a wonderful starter - the hit of the evening, if you ask me. Duck breast and duck confit perigees was a novel twist on a an old favourite - the duck was succulently soft. Others had a tasty lamb shoulder done moroccan style, and a lovely looking piece of halibut. The little extras you get here, from amuse bouche to palate cleanser between courses and a chocolate truffle to finish off, really make you feel that Rouge continues to want to inspire and impress. A real gem of a place!"

  • "Overall the dining experience was fantastic! However, what made it memorable (to the point that I will be back) was how they accommodating my allergies and dietary restrictions. Not only were they open to modifying the menu they also provided me with suggested changes that could better match my needs. This type of service was phenomenal! It helped me feel normal in this world where dining out is difficult. Thank you!"

  • "This restaurant is a true gem. It is a historically home with many of it's originally characteristics. There are many dinning areas which allows guests to have an unique experience each visit. The food tantalizes your palette while allowing your mind to wonder, what is this extraordinary taste. The service was amazing but especially since you felt like you were being served by an old friend. Lastly, they offer an extensive mine list and on this occasion we requested they pick our wine and it was surreal. "

  • "The food was very good and the portions were just right for an upscale restauant. The service was well informed, attentive and well timed. The restaurant was a bit noisy though. Overall a very nice evening."

  • "Very well presented meal, excellent wine list, great service. The menu was a little limited in selection."

  • "Food was prepped to perfection and repeatable as we ordered two of the same appetizer. The service to describe the food during the menu selection and food presentation was delightful. The description was as delicious as the food itself. The service is a nice change from larger food chains with the service you pay for. They even have a coat check!"

  • "We enjoyed the Chef's tasting menu this past Thursday evening. It was absolute perfection - highly creative, beautifully presented, perfectly prepared - a treat from start to finish. I would highly recommend this restaurant. It is certainly one of the finest in Calgary. "

  • "overall and without a hesitations, Rouge is one of the best restaurants in town. wide, spacious and comfortable seating arrangements. good separation of bigger groups and smaller parties into different dining rooms. attentive service, both in terms of responding to requests and anticipating the needs of diners. however, not of the kind that bothers too much or the kind that demonstrates artificial interest in the diners. innovative menu that brings the best of international cocking traditions and local ingredients. well calculated portions in each dish as well. well balanced wine list with at least one good option in each category. great desserts. and, great presentation and design of served dishes. what can one ask more? will return soon "

  • "This was our fourth time at Rouge and it just keeps getting better! We had, as often before, the Chef's Tasting menu option and every course was exceptional. Of special note was the Elk tenderloin, which none of us had tried before and we all enjoyed. Nothing beats Rouge for a special occasion."

  • "I took my mom to Rouge for a special birthday dinner. Several days later, we are still talking about how great it was. It was the best dining experience either of us has ever had. Every plate was so well thought out, our server was friendly and attentive, and of course, the atmosphere can't be beat. There is not a thing that I would have changed. "

  • "Had a great dinner at Rouge. The good was perfect and the service was top notch. I definitely need to go back and try the Chef's Tasting. The only 'less than perfect ' part was the ambience, which was plain when you compare it to other similar restaurants in Calgary, like Bow Valley Ranche House. It didn't take away from the amazing pork belly with gnocchi though! I still loved it!"

  • "The best place in Calgary for a fantastic dining experience. The wait staff are extremely knowledgeable. They give you the right amount of attention and are very engaging. The food is the best in Calgary and portions are perfect."

  • "As younger people, reading the menu online we were a little intimidated as there are many items on it that seem out of our culinary depth. When we arrived there we had a note on the table wishing us a Happy 1st Anniversary (which I had mentioned when making the reso on Open Table - so Thank you!). The menu had a few additional choices compared to what we read online and we both chose the halibut. It was absolutely delicious! My husband who has a large appetite, said it was the tastiest halibut dish he had ever tried and that he was very satisfied with the portion. Overall fantastic experience!"
