Diner Reviews
  • " My party enjoyed dinner as the food was good and the restaurant is located close to the Shakespearean theaters. My party enjoyed the Caesar salad but the water forgot to bring my chili appetizer. The meatloaf and pork chop appetizers were tasty and prices very reasonable. Larks is a good choice for dining for a casual and dependable meal."

  • "Great for a quick tasty meal before heading to the theatre."

  • "We visited on a busy Friday evening. Every dish was tasty and delicious and the service we received was exceptional. The Brussel sprouts appetizer is so good we had to have it again. The fresh Columbia River salmon special was a winner-- perfectly prepared and a delicious cut of fish. The fried chicken with mashed potato was excellent, everything you want from this comfort food dish. Very nicely prepared! We rounded out our meal with berry tart with a scoop of strawberry- rhubarb ice cream. We will be back!"

  • "This time we went to Larks twice during our stay in Ashland. We were pleased with all of our choices because the food is fresh and superbly prepared and presented. The lunch special of smoked salmon salad was outstanding. The three of us agreed and not a drop was left by anyone. We were allowed to sit and they refilled our water, tea and coffee until we were almost the last people left. I would recommend visiting Larks whenever you are in Ashland, even if you don't stay at the hotel."

  • "We've been going to Larks for great meals and special occasions for several years. The food is always fresh and innovative. The wait staff is attentive and professional. And the ambiance conveys a sense that it is a special event."

  • "We've eaten here before and have always enjoyed a good meal before a play in Ashland."

  • "A mixed bag Sunday evening. Decided to go with the daily special rockfish although the server had no clue whether it was local or not. Unfortunately, the rockfish was not right, not tasty, not fresh-- big mistake not to send this back to the kitchen. The trout, however was wonderful and we shared the Brussel sprouts starter which was perfect-- they do this better than just about anyone."

  • "This is our favorite Ashland spot for brunch or dinner. Food and service are outstanding."

  • "Very enjoyable ambiance and very good service, which, unfortunately, the food does not live up to. Not bad, but not as good as one would hope for."

  • "We loved the food at Lark's. This is my third time and I have not been disappointed! The service is top notch and professional, yet at the same time personal. The food is also really good, though it seemed there were a lot of items on the menu that were the same as another restaurant a couple of blocks away. Nonetheless, the food was presented beautifully and was delicious. It is well worth a visit."

  • " We didn't get off to a good start at Larks. We arrived two minutes early for our 6 pm reservation, and the hostess (abruptly) told us to wait since our table wasn't ready. We had a long wait to order. The restaurant was out of the wine we wanted. The first courses were shared, and they were quite good. Our mains were served after 7pm (long wait). My beef came with really bad polenta (a huge portion full of blue cheese). The other 3 members of the group tasted it, and all pronounced it dreadful. Some of the mains were tasty, but none were outstanding. We had a great server who did her best to keep things going, but she was not in control of the kitchen!"

  • "We were promptly seated at reservation time. Service was great without before overly fussy. Food quality was excellent and there were a number of interesting, beyond the ordinary offerings. Ambience is perfect. Neither overly formal or informal, and it was very easy to converse. I considered their prices reasonable relative to the dining experience provided."

  • "Larks has always been one of my most favorite restaurants while visiting Ashland. For dinner, I had one of the special, local sturgeon filet over a bed of a risotto with corn, jalapenos and bacon. I savored each bite; it literally melted in my mouth. As I was there alone, and have had unfortunate experiences at other restaurants, perhaps seen as a "low tipper", at Larks I received excellent service -- personal attention from my wait person, attentive but not intrusive. This recent experience is consistent with how I have been treated at Larks over the 6 years I've been going there. Larks is a little slice of culinary heaven on earth!"

  • "The area where one must wait to be seated is very small. So when we had reservations at 11:45am and arrived at 11:40a it was disconcerting when she said we'll seat you in 5 minutes. There were two tables of 2 seated. They had opened at 1130a. There were others waiting. Who knows IF they had reservations and when they were? Hope no one got there 1/2 hour early!! Bad start!"

  • "I was so excited to try this restaurant after I tried to get in without a reservation the previous year. It is not disappoint. An attentive staff and an inventive menu combined to make for a really memorable experience. I happily await my next dining experience at Larks."

  • "Ashland is a great dining town, and among many possible choices, Lark's is our favorite restaurant."

  • "Four of us went to dinner at Lark's before a play at the Shakespeare Festival. All four of us loved our meals, which can be a rarity! The wine list was very nice, with a lot of local wines."

  • "Although the food was ok, I expected something more, considering the size of the bill I paid. The French onion soup was bland, and the trout was not particularly tasty. The service was friendly and professional, but we ended up with cold cappuccino, a fitting end to the meal."

  • "The food was overall good enough. My yellowtail chunk was red in the middle (not fully cooked) so I had to send it back. The replacement was perfectly cooked, but the waitress chastised me mildly, saying that "there normally is a red vein in that cut" with the implication that they were humoring me. Excuse me, but I've been cooking fish for over 50 years and I know raw fish. I did not appreciate the barb. We ordered the brussels sprouts appetizer due to rave reviews, but ours was long on bacon chunks and maple syrup and short on brussels sprouts. As I must stick to a low sugar diet, the dish was a big disappointment. The arugula salad dressing (a blueberry vinaigrette) also suffered from sugar overload so I ate little although it was tasty."

  • "Lark's has delicious, locally-sourced food, a lovely dining room and the best, friendliest service in Ashland."

  • "Service was outstanding as we're the appitiser, salad and beverages. Waiter even took a special drink recipe request. Unfortunately the main course did it meet the same high standards. The duck was dry, which is particularly notable since it was dark meat instead of breast. The waiter attempted to make up for the chef by bringing 2 sauces but to little avail. The sole was also so overbooked that portions could not be cut with a fork and required a knife. I have heard good things about this resturant so perhaps it was an off night or perhaps being the 4th of July the chef was a stand in. It was fairly early and not yet busy so it was not due to an overly busy kitchen. We might go back and try again but will not refer a friend."

  • "An all around great restaurant. We were seated on time for an early pre-show dinner. Excellent service in very pleasant surroundings. The food was well prepared and tasty. We ordered the two specials of the day -- both fish dishes. Both preparations were executed and served attractively. Definitely a good experience."

  • "Service was superb; the server informed, engaged, friendly, alert but never intrusive, with a light & responsive touch to all potential needs. A++. Fried chicken breast, a traditional favorite was moist inside crispy outside & not overly salty; to the other end of the spectrum, duck was beautifully presented & reportedly juicy, tender & moist - kudos on a culinary challenge. polenta & confit were a bit unusual & overshadowed by the delectable brussels sprouts! salads are all exceptional here. Wild Trout with cauliflower puree was very enjoyable and would be ordered again. Don't get me started on the desserts - all over the top delicious. Coffee was just OK but for us the bar is set high. We don't drink alcohol but noted the bar was busy!"

  • "We have always enjoyed Larks, but for this visit we were seated in an add-on area off the entrance to the dining room. When we asked to be seated in the main dining room, we were told we had to make the main dining room a "special request" on the Open Table reservation form. We were very disappointed; the area we were in was cold, noisy with kitchen noise and people entering the dining room, as well as cold drafts from the outside door opening and closing. I doubt that we'll ever dine there again; there are more accommodating fine restaurants in Ashland."

  • "Lovely hotel with a great bar but the food quality at the restaurant has continued to drop off sharply over the last several years. The last time I ate here the filet of sole was inedible and had to be sent back. The waiter (and host) were very solicitious and the fish was redone without complaint and I was offered a free desert so points on the outfront staff but the food is very uneven."

  • "We visit Ashland every year, and and one of our regular stops is Larks. Over the years the consistency of the service, food, and wine offerings has been constant. This year two in our party had the amazing pork chop. This is a huge meal, but they were up for it. I had the trout, which was cooked to perfection. We will keep coming back!"

  • "Delicious fresh gourmet food. Pretty room with full bar connected to the Ashland Springs Hotel. The trout was THE BEST I have ever had. Crispy skin moist fish infused with Juniper berries and pine Served on puréed cauliflower topped with pea shoots and hazelnuts. OMG so yummy! The fresh beet salad with goat cheese was great too. The sole was served with Huckleberry thyme beurre Blanc, carmelized potatoes and carrots. The cheese fondue with crab was impressively presented but just OKAY. Id pass on that next time. They had a decent wine list and nice dessert collection. We had the above plus one glass of wine. Bill was $130. The table next to us ordered 3" thick double cut pork chops with a mustard apple glaze. They said it was "excellent""

  • "Enjoyed a wonderful meal. Food - the 5 cheese & crab fondue was bowl licking fantastic-(there was enough bread). The mussels were good, the cream sauce was spicy- just needed some more and the mussel broth needed some seasoning but there was plenty. The desserts, the creme brulee and Mocha Cheese cake were excellent. The dinning room was beautiful with large wall mirrors so you could see all around. We will definitely be back when we come back for another Shakespeare Play. We enjoyed chatting with the couples on both sides of our table. They had been here many times and said everything was great, and so it was"

  • "The Lark strikes a comfortable medium between a traditional dinner house and casual dining. The food is consistently excellent, the service is friendly and attentive, and the patrons are alive, attractive, and intelligent. (This is Ashland!) This is not a particular young crowd, or loud crowd, sort of place, but if you are used to very good food and excellent service in San Francisco or Portland restaurants, this is the place for you in Ashland. You can sit back and relax and from most tables observe the passing human parade on the street. And: it is not extraordinarily expensive."

  • "Service was excellent. Our appetizers were good--tempura asparagus and roasted oysters. Both servings were generous. Menu is varied. Unfortunately our fish was only ok. The halibut was overcooked and the rockfish covered by a thick sauce that hid the taste and texture of the fish. Perhaps another entrée would be better."
