A word from La Boca
Opened in 2006 by Chef/Owner James Campbell Caruso (three-time James Beard Award Nominee), La Boca is an intimate Spanish tapas restaurant in the heart of downtown Santa Fe. Influenced by his travels in Spain, Chef James cultivates synergies of authentic Spanish ingredients to create dishes both traditional and modern. Dishes such as thinly sliced tuna drizzled with blood orange aioli and topped with kalamata olives and smoked sea salt create a constellation of different flavors in every bite.

With the feel of a lively European wine bar, La Boca also features an extensive selection of carefully chosen mediterranean and South American wines. Knowledgeable and animated staff graciously guide customers to the perfect wine or sherry to complement their meals.

La Boca is a proud participant in the Santa Fe Farm to Restaurant program.

Please note: Because seating at La Boca is limited, reservations for parties over 4 must contact the restaurant

Diner Reviews
  • "What a fabulous find! The open table photo with linen table cloths is misleading. Tables were bare wood about one foot away from each neighboring table. It's a tiny, packed restaurant with good service and absolutely delicious food. Loved the interesting concept of pairing different sherries with each plate. Such a unique concept. Each of the three sherries we tried were completely different: cold white, room temperature red and oak colored dessert. Anchovies were beautiful and superb and the stems of the artichokes with goat cheese were surprisingly meaty and delicious. There is something for everyone on this menu. Don't miss this tapas restaurant in Santa Fe...just a block from the plaza."

  • "Very nice, great portions, good selection of wines and suggestions for food pairings."

  • "My wife and I enjoyed four tapas and 2 desserts. Especially taken with barramundi and bruschetta. Very nice wine list, a Chablis we don't always find offered. Boca was busy and deserves all praise."

  • "We stop in Santa Fe every year between home in Tucson and Colorado. Dinner at La Boca has become a much anticipated tradition. We have always been delighted by the menu and thrilled that old favorites (bruschetta with mushrooms, cream, truffle oil, and a fried egg!) remain. This year our dinner was accompanied by an excellent guitarist who surprised with an equal talent for singing. What a terrific voice she has!"

  • "We ordered a bottle of wine, 2 vegetable tapas (artichokes with goat cheese and fried brussels sprouts) and 2 entree tapas (crab cakes with scallops and costillas - ribs). We received the first 2 tapas and then after 30+ minutes, our waitress brought us the dessert menu. We reminded our waitress we had never received our last two tapas. She apologized and brought them out in another 10 minutes or so. She said they would be "comped." When we got our bill, we were not charged for those two items but she had added $20 to the alcohol to make up for it. Again she apologized and removed those added charges. She blamed the computers system once and her manager the second time. It put a damper on an otherwise delicious meal."

  • "Everything about the food is wonderful. The ambience leaves a little something to be desired with small tables crowded close together. It's pretty noisy in there."

  • "The staff and ambiance are always great. The tapas always come out so tasty. Our favorite is the bruschetta, patatas bravas, tapas trio paired with any of the salads and the morcilla."

  • "The large variety of offerings and the wonderful flavors of the dishes makes this restaurant a favorite of ours. On this visit the squid ink pasta was a standout,"

  • "Serving the most scrumptious tapas, you get to explore many offerings from the menu. My favorite is the egg bruschetta - bruschetta with crimini mushrooms, cream, and fried egg, topped with truffle oil & reggianito cheese - it is just so good. The ambiance is more urban than southwest - small restaurant, with small tables fitted close together. The noise level is high enough to make it a bit difficult for these two softer spoken people to talk extensively, but we enjoyed the live music and our meals very much. The service was just as it should be - prompt, pleasant and non-intrusive."

  • "Food, drinks and dessert were incredible. My only issue was that our waiter was rude. We are locals and immediately our waiter's attitude was one of superiority; we were looked down upon. He was not friendly and was condescending. I asked him to explain how a dish was prepared and he treated me as if I were stupid for not knowing. I ordered a glass of sherry and the waiter delivered less than half of a serving; the bartender must have noticed because he came to our table and appropriately filled my glass. The rest of the restaurant staff were very pleasant, however, I rated the service low because you're only as good as your weakest link. I would return to La Boca, but will specify that I do not want to be served by Jay."

  • "We enjoyed dinner so much we decided to pop in for Sunday brunch and we were not disappointed. Smoked salmon w/goat cheese, avacado, red onion panini (who would have thought?) and Huevos Rancheros perhaps the best ever! Beautiful, clean and delicious food. A real find."

  • "Creative and delicious - beets and goat cheese, excellent! Fried shrimp - subbed garlic aioli for the too-spicy red sauce. Yum!"

  • "Second time there and everything has been great! Wish there were more room between tables."

  • "Fun happening tapas bar. The server was attentive and new the menu. Noise level up there so guitarist could not be heard so well. The space is small so very warm. Could use ceiling fans. Still a great place to eat."

  • "Very good tapas restaurant offering many unique dining options that were well prepared, well presented and very tasty. The wait staff went out of their way to make sure that we were pleased."

  • "The new summer menu is outstanding. Try the new hummus trio and the melon salad - outstanding. Unfortunately, our waitress ignored us most of the evening. This is really unusual for this restaurant so I will definitely not cross them off my list."

  • "La Boca is a very nice Spanish Tapas cafe in downtown Santa Fe. The restaurant is small and somewhat cramped, but with a casual atmosphere. The wait staff was friendly and attentive. The food was excellent and varied from grilled Baramundi to beef tacos and a host of vegetarian dishes. All were prepared and presented well."

  • "Paella seemed to be the best dish. However, be careful as some of the entrees may be too small versus price paid."

  • "The food at La Boca is truly fantastic, and is best suited to foodies and adventurous diners. Everything we tried was spot-on, so it is difficult to pick a specific favorite. On the down-side, since this is a Tapas restaurant, you will be enjoying many items at the same time, however, the table was far too small to accommodate our dishes. It would have been far better if they had seated us at a larger table, several of which remained empty through our entire visit. Bottom line, we loved the food, but would leave if seated again at the tiny tables."

  • "Good selection of tapas in a fun and cozy setting. Dishes were hit or miss. Beet salad was fantastic. Fried shrimp great. Seafood ravioli was meh and braised shortrib not good. Interesting Spanish-based wine selection."

  • "I was alone that evening and from out of town. The experience was good with great food, wine, and service. I didn't order a bottle of wine because I was alone and the server recommended an excellent Tempranillo from among several on the menu. He also recommended an excellent Sherry with dessert. He even explained that under Spanish law it couldn't be called Sherry because it was not from the Sherry DO in Cadiz. The Crema Catalana dessert was especially good."

  • "La Boca was a special place for a family get-together. We loved the large tables, designed for sharing. Kids (pre-teen and teen) tried tapas for the first time, and found all kinds of food to try and like. Service was excellent, catering to the needs of both adults and kids. We loved the variety and excellence of food, and found that tapas are perfect for making you feel adequately fed but not stuffed."

  • "My friend and I were the only people there for our early lunch. I had to call the waiter over several times.....first to take our order, to bring more bread, to pay the bill. He seemed to be hanging around in the back all the time, by the bar, instead of quietly walking by to see if we needed more of anything."

  • "Food and service were good but very costly for what you get"

  • "We had planned to find something that spoke to New Mexican cuisine. When we found La Boca, identified as Spanish, we knew we were headed for a tasty meal. Love enchiladas, but taps are so much better."

  • "Something is wrong at La Boca of late. It has long been our favorite restaurant in Santa Fe, but the last few times the food seems tired and there is not enough care going on in the kitchen anymore. Maybe we are just hitting it on off days, but too many off days gets it kicked off of my favorites list. I can cook better and fresher tapas at my house and that is not an area of my expertise."

  • "The food was very good and our server was very knowledgeable about the sherry as well as the food menu. We enjoyed our meal here very much and would recommend it. We only shared the small plates and just kept ordering until we got full. We would go back."

  • "Served too quickly and lackluster service. While what we ordered was delicious the menu does not offer enough variety for vegetarians"

  • "Great food. Beautiful presentation. Good wine list and reasonable price. Outstanding ambience- the guitar player was a gem of this place."

  • "The Tapas and service were great. Would highly recommend! Try the helado de turron for desert! It was fabulous."
    Dined on 6/8/2014
  • "We loved the food and the service was very good - as good as any Spanish restaurant we have frequented in various US cities, Madrid and San Sebastian. However, we did not care for the small cramped, closely spaced tables through which waiters weaved sometimes at speed closely missing us and generally making us uncomfortable. We had to tune that out in order to enjoy our food. Admittedly Tapas restaurants in Spain vary a lot in terms of customer comforts so we had an idea what to expect at LaBoca but we wanted to try it anyway. We would not go back again unless we were certain we would get a better table."

  • "The food was of high quality, though some dishes (artichokes, soft shell crab special) were good but not outstanding . Other dishes like the scallops were amazing. "

  • "Excellent tapas. Go early so it won't be so crowded"

  • "The food was wonderful and beautifully presented. I took my parents there for their 53 wedding anv but it was marred by the waitress who was so snobby. She never told us her name and anytime we wanted to ask a question she acted as if we were so stupid. It's a shame that someone like her ruins a special occasion. "

  • "Reservations are a must, since this restaurant is small and deservedly very crowded. We shared the Paella and I believe it to be the best I have ever eaten. Loaded with very lean chorizo, shrimp and tender rice and saffron flavor. The wine list is entirely Spanish with very good selections for all tastes. The service was attentive, but not overwhelming. Highly recommended."

  • "The egg with truffle oil over bruschetta was divine! The gambas al ajillo (sp)? was fantastic. The squid ink ravioli was just the opposite. It was bland and did not taste fresh. "

  • "We look forward to eating at La Boca every year when we come to NM to visit family. We make a special trip to Santa Fe just to delight in the amazing tapas and enjoy the great Sherry selection they carry. Everything single tapa is incredible, and the ability to try so many different flavors and dishes, thanks to the perfect tapas sizes, is a foodies dream come true. And now cheff James Campbell Caruso has another tapas restaurant called La Taberna just as phenomenal as La Boca. Both restaurants are a must go if you enjoy fine food."

  • "What a treat! The specials were truly special, very unique. This is a great place for an occasion to celebrate. Although alittle pricey, we felt like it exceeded our taste expectations. Service was excellent, too!"

  • "We've dined at La Boca three times in the past year, and have felt completely food-happy each time, comparable to any high end tapas in Barcelona, if not better. Great attention to precise culinary technique, great fresh ingredients, and surprising complex layered flavors. The sherries are a revelation! Even if you think you don't like sherry, try the flight, as I did, and you'll be convinced that sherry is the perfect accompaniment to these deep-flavored dishes. Small portions yield satisfaction without overeating!"
