A word from Kokkari Estiatorio
Kokkari (pronounced “Ko-Kar-ee”) is a small fishing village located on the islands of Samos in the Aegean Sea, whose name is derived from the small onions that were once produced in the nearby fields. Its fertile soil and Mediterranean climate translated into an abundance of fresh produce as well as treasured seafood and game. Legend tells that Kokkari is the site where Orion, a mighty hunter and a young man of gigantic stature and great beauty, fell in love with the daughter of the king of Chios. For the love of her, Orion forged the island for wild game and seafood to prepare elaborate banquets in celebration of their love.   • "Celebrated my 30th birthday here and it was a great choice. Menu was extensive and had multiple vegetarian options. Everything we ate was superb and arrived very quickly (we were ordering off of the appetizer menu). Service was attentive and friendly. We had a great meal and a great evening."

  • "This was a memorable dining evening for my wife and me. Everything about this restaurant is top-notch. The table was comfortable, with pleasant seating, and we were seated close enough to a nearby couple to talk if we wished. Superb small plates -- even the tongue, which my wife can't stand the idea of -- was terrific. The service was attentive and the meal was timed perfectly. This was a wonderful evening, and we will recommend this establishment to anyone without question-- and will return again and again."

  • "Found this through tripadvisor as ranked nr2. Ordered a couple of small dishes which were supposed to go out at the same time. Got ribs first. Tasted ok but nothing special. Kind of hard grilled. Then some fried potatoes seperatly. Tasted ok but boring to eat without anything else on the table. Then some prawns in garlic. Good taste. Then at last a souvlaki with meat and mixed vegetables. Ok but nothing special. Also the waiter removed my fiances plate before she even was finished with her ribs. We specifically told the waiter we wanted the dishes at the same time - still didn't happend... He told us he didn't understood our request after we pointed out it when we finished our dinner. Strange - though he confirmed it when he took our order."

  • "Kokkari has opened a whole new door in my world to Greek wines. While I enjoyed my octopus salad which was tasty and cooked to perfection ( no rubbery texture) it was the wines that left a great impression. Our server's knowledge of their extensive wine list was impressive and her recommendations were spot on! My husband had the lamb chops and said it was perfectly seasoned. The potatoes that come with it were perfectly crisp on the outside and soft in the inside. We ended our lunch with the Baklava with prailine ice cream and espresso. It was delicious! Not extensively sweet but perfectly nutty. The place is charming with huge opened windows that let in the sun and bay breeze. An awesome place to eat with friends or a romantic date."

  • "Food was outstanding. Grilled octopus was good, and. Stuffed calamari were a favorite at our table. The grilled artichokes were also very good. I would skip the lamb riblets - lamb is too fatty to make this preparation palatable. I recommend getting multiple appetizers and salads and skipping the main courses, which are good, but I always find apps more interesting."

  • "Our romantic evening was over when we arrived for our 9:30 dinner reservation for 2. Very loud in the back dining room, where we were seated between several large groups. we have always enjoyed the friendliness of the wait staff, but our waiter was a little too professional with little charm. I would never book another 9:30 reservation, it was all that was available even tho we booked 2 weeks in advance for a saturday reservation. This is our 4th time here, will try again one more time, will ask for a quiet spot! Food was adequate, could use some more vegetarian choices. Love the wood fired oven and the ambiance and the many people available to help with wine and comfort. Excellent chianti."

  • "The service was perfect! and Jeff, our waiter, knew the perfect wine pairing with each course. The food was extremely well prepared and presented. We were very happy with the whole experience including appetizers, main courses and dessert (not to be missed). Since it is a Greek restaurant we chose what we thought would be most authentic: grilled octopus, asparagus with crumbled myzithra and herbs and lamb meatballs. All were delicious. I would not get the grilled octopus again, but it was nice to experience. Entrees were outstanding! Whole fish off of the grill(they even deboned it) and the lamb shank tender and flavorful. Desserts were also fabulous with the Greek "donuts" and homemade baklava plus ouzo and more wine. We LOVED it!"

  • "Kokkari is one of those rare places that is invariably very busy yet somehow always manages to provide superb Mediterranean food (far better than any meal we've had in Greece) served in the most efficient and cordial yet unobtrusive way by a very professional staff. Fabulous how our maître d' entertained our 3.5 year old granddaughter. Kokkari's wine list, while not huge, is ample and includes many fine "reserve" bottles. Offers what's probably the best value of any high end restaurant in the Bay Area."

  • "As a Greek American, I would rate the good here as very good. The gigantes are world class, as well as the zucchini cakes and chicken livers. The Kotopoulo is excellent, and the Greek oven roasted potatoes are perfectly done and so good. This restaurant is a little pricey, but the quality is first rate and portions large enough to take home leftovers. Yum! Wish there were more of these restaurants!!"

  • "Everyone I know raves about Kokkari but unfortunately I can't. Although I love the ambiance,some of the dishes were disappointing. My lamb meatballs were so incredibly delicious that I kicked myself for asking the waiter to cut the order in half (from 4 to 2) so I could save room for my entree. I took the waiter's suggestion to have my sea bass roasted instead of grilled. Big mistake! The sauce was so heavy that it drowned the taste of the fish and left it soggy. Too much parsley ruined it too. My beau screwed up by ordering ravioli, of all things, in a Greek restaurant. The ravioli, which he said was hard, was buried under so much stuff that you couldn't tell what the dish was. Next time I'll have the meatballs as my entree and a salad."

  • "This is my second time going to Kokkari and it was just as good. My first time there I went with a group of friends. Everyone ordered salads and I ordered the rib eye steak. Well, pretty much everyone asked for a piece of my steak. It was delish! My boyfriend & I have been talking about the steak ever since. We went back and ordered it again. It was just as delicious as we remembered. I also ordered the Kokkari Salata- one of the best salads I've had in a while. Service was good. Not intrusive. When a couple with a baby was seated next to us in a tight seating area, the manager, Doug, switched them to a bigger table away from us straight away. Very thoughtful. I would definitely go back again for special occasions. It is somewhat pricey."

  • "Following a very positive recommendation I was concerned my expectations were too high and would not be matched. However this place is fantastic. Great service (they hit the spot for being there when you want them and not when you don't). Great food (we had several mezze dishes and all were mouth watering plus an amazing dessert). They pay attention to the small things like writing Happy Anniversary on your dessert plate and would happily chat when you wanted to ask questions. I will definitely recommend this place to friends and will come back if ever in San Francisco again."

  • "Kokkari is adored by everyone who eats there, including Greeks. It's authentic Greek cuisine even my mother from Greece enjoys every time she visits me here. You can fill up on the appetizers but save room for the most incredible lamb chops you will ever have. The desserts are likewise spectacular--including the most incredible ice cream on the planet. My favorite dessert is the galactoboureko but the Kokkari sundae is to die for as well. You just can't go wrong with anything on the menu!!"

  • "My husband and I have been here twice now as I like to give places a second chance, especially if they are highly rated. Both times the food was good, not great, and our servers were adequate at best. We liked the ambiance of the restaurant and the location made it easy to find parking; however, if the food is not superb, why bother paying the price to eat out? My husband had a soda and generally in places like this you get refills for free. Good thing he only got a refill one time as he was charged $3.50 for it. On a positive note, you do get a lot of food. Overall I would not return to this restaurant."

  • "The food here is so good and for that I'd go back. But be extra careful when walking...the wooden floors are unusually slippery! I was there for a business lunch (no alcohol) and when I stepped out of the ladies room, walking normally, my rubber soled shoe slipped on what felt like oil. I lost my balance and fell on my knee. I was really upset because I thought there was a spill on the floor but when i got up to see, I didn't see anything. I was thankful no one saw me fall and glad i was wearing long dark pants. Like I said, I was with some clients at lunch so I didn't want to say anything to the restaurant, but geez, why are the floors so slippery? A few people I've told said they noticed the same thing."

  • "Pretty much everything we had was amazing. The zucchini cakes were the best. The flatbread we had was mediocre and the grilled branzini was super flavorful - the de-boned it and everything! Was a nice light dish. We also had a salad which our waiter recommended that was a great combo of flavors with blue cheese dressing. I have to commend our waiter for helping us out with his recommendations. I've heard all their desserts are amazing but the fried filo dough with custard dish was to die for! It really made my husband's birthday dinner extraordinary. The only thing I regret is not getting the lamb chops since everyone raves about them. But alas, my husband is not keen on eating baby animals."

  • "This is the second time we dine here. The food we had was good but not to be remembered. Just like the previous time. The service this time was poor. We felt like the waiter rushed us all the time from the time we ordered through the end. We were not done with the appetizers when the plates where whisked away from us. I said "please leave them" and the reply was "your entrees are ready". The waiter brought us the entrees and put them on the table next to the appetizer plates. I think a good waiter should gauge the timing for the entrees rather than slam them on the table before guests are ready for them."
