Diner Reviews
  • "I took my fiancé to colt and gray for her birthday last week. We had a few cocktails at st. Elize the speakeasy downstairs. Excellent cocktails down there. Nice ambience. At colt and gray we had a nice meal, just not up to snuff with the price. When I spend $200 on a meal I expect perfection. I had the rabbit and she had the blue cheese gnocchi. Both ok but nothing special. Lots of salt, minimal creativity. The best part of the meal was the leek and pea soup. That was superb. The space however is gorgeous. Really nice ambience all around. I would return for cocktails and soup alone. "

  • "The food was very fresh, and it made a huge difference when it came to the taste of the food. I had the lamb and the meat was savory and delicious. All in all, a great dining experience. Definitely recommend this place for a date or special occasions."

  • "We scheduled this dinner with another couple who we've not seen for over two years. The location was in the up-wardly energetic Platte Ave neighborhood slightly south of the Denver Beer Company with many other ecletic shops and restaurant/bars. Our reservations were at 5:15 and we were seated immediately. The table was next to a fireplace that cast a great ambiance without emitting excessive heat. The server - Marty was outstanding in taking orders, following up with the table and explaining the entrees. This is not your father's American style restaurant. It had a wide slection of appetizers and entrees that were reasonably priced entrees (between $25-$40). The drinks and wide list was varied. Food was outstanding!"

  • "Great food, great service. We enjoyed bone marrow for the first time, and drinking sherry through the bone will not be something I will forget soon. It is always nice to see a restaurant live up to its reputation."

  • "The charcuterie plate was incredible. We had small plates and shared our dinner and it was very good. I didn't care for the beef heart, but the one marrow was rich and tasty."

  • "Splendid restaurant. The decor and lighting sets the mood for a great experience right away. The servers were knowledgeable and courteous and very professional. The food was top shelf from first bite to last. The oysters were on par with what I can get in Seattle. The asparagus salad was a tasty dream salad, light and fresh and some thoughtfully arranged each flavor enunicated boldly. The mains were generously portioned and rich in flavor. I found myself stuffed solid halfway through my lamb but what with the fried english peas I kept going until I couldn't lift another forkful. We had a nice Rioja to go with the meal and for dessert a bread pudding with Bourdon ice cream. Will certainly eat here again, whenever back in Denver."

  • "Overall I loved this place. I would definitely like to go back. I got the lamb, and while not the best I have ever had, still great. I got the olive oil thyme cake and I could die a happy person after eating that. My boyfriend did not make a great choice for his main dish. He got the pesto pasta. It was terrible. I'm surprised he finished it. I let him have a lot of mine to make up for it. For dessert he had the chocolate cake. It was very smooth. I would recommend this place for a very nice date. Try the lamb head cheese. Sounds awful, but it was really good."

  • "We went to Gold & Gray in restaurant week. It was nice, our table was in out in a busy place, didn't really feel comfortable or cozy on our romantic night out. The service was very friendly and we appreciated that. The portions were samplers but adequate. We will go back sometime to try some regular menu items. Overall it was a pleasant evening in a nice place."

  • "The desserts were what really made this meal standout. We've been before and this time, the rest of the meal was quite good, but really didn't stand out when compared to other high end restaurants in Denver."

  • "Food was even better than i remembered it to be. Creative, delicious. Drinks are amazingly inventive and great. Service was fantastic. They have valet parking which is great and i like the expansion of the restaurant. Always a wonderful experience."

  • "Overall , Disappointing. The newly constructed area lacked ambiance and energy! Could see a closet , with what appeared to have cleaning solution. Hostess nice enough and helpful with a hint of pretentiousness :( I had dined there when they had first opened. And, from what I can remember , the choices of edibles better and tastier. After reading the menus, we could , practically , hear the pigs squealing from the kitchen. Although , I will say, the chicken risotto was the saving grace, along with our waitress ! She was amazing ! The other 3 guests , did not like their meals at all. The salmon hush puppies were floating belly up downstream. Yuck! I have never given a review like this before, feels weird , but felt necessary !"

  • "The food was very good, well executed and not what you typically see. What stood out most to my date and I was the sweetbreads (Thymus). We both like to try new and different things at restaurants as we see them to explore new possibilities of discovering something amazing, or just to reignite our adventurous ambitions. The thymus was not one of our favorites, but that doesn't mean everything else was great. There was this chestnut bread pudding that came with my Duroc Pork that very well may have altered my life as we know it. Its not very often that you bite into something that literally expels the "whoa" out of your mouth without even thinking of it. Had a dream about it last night actually. Pistachio and Olive Oil cake is a must have."

  • "What a great surprise! We at walked by this place several times and passed. What an absolute treat when we finally went. We'll be back and soon! Great value on wine and every dish we had was exceptional. Well done...."

  • "The atmosphere of Colt and Gray is unique and fun. Although it initially comes off as very white linen, you then realize the subtle, fun notes such as the waiter wearing a polka dot bow tie and the cocktail menu that's based entirely off the movie "Anchorman." The food was delicious for Restaurant Week 2014 with perfect portions. The only downside is that it is very expensive. It was affordable with the prefix menu, but we had an Avery beer (that was smaller than a pint) and it was 8.50. Way overpriced. But, overall, it was a great experience."

  • "Was the last table there. I think the kitchen had lost it's enthusiasm a little. Although the food was very good, as a self described foodie, I just wasn't wowed. But I will for sure come back."

  • "I had been to this restaurant before and really enjoyed it. I took my mom here for 5280 and the food was awful. The oysters were in edible because of rogue shell chunks, my mom's spaghetti came out as a lump of overcooked mushy ribbon pasta, and the pot de crem dessert was flat and just not good. Their cocktails are creative though and the sticky toffee pudding is the best dessert in the work. I just value consistency especially when bringing my parents out somewhere so I won't be going back here. So disappointed!"

  • "Four of us went on Sunday night and were seated immediately. Server was wonderful. I thought the beef short ribs were great , others thought they were too close to a pot roast feel. Trout was very good with crispy skin. General opinion was that the servings were a bit small but maybe due to restaurant week constraints. Wine menu selection was good. Pot de creme dessert very good too."

  • "It's nice to find a locally owned restaurant that does it all right. We visited during Restaurant Week, which usually means rushed meals and poor service, but that was certainly not true here. Although the small restaurant was totally full, the servers took the time to provide excellent service, and to explain the unique drinks and food selections. The meals were prepared and served with an artistic flair, which added to the unique spices and flavors utalized. All in all, haven't been to as nice a local restaurant in a long time. It is a bit out of the way, but surely worth the visit."

  • "Being in the restaurant business myself I find it such a pleasure that though we only dine here a few times a year we are remembered by name. by some and by face by others. Once again the meal was flawless as was the service. The sommelier made it a point to stop over and pour wine and check in with us even though he was not our server. The new bar space downstairs was lovely and everyone was very friendly. What else can I say but THAMNK YOU!!!"

  • "My husband and I celebrated our anniversary at Colt & Gray. Ordered the Duroc Pork- excellent. We also ordered the pasta special made with duck confit- delicious. The charcuterie tray is all house made. All meats are cured in the restaurant therefore so fresh and tasty. Waited in the bar for our table (we were early). Husband order wine and I wanted a drink. Couldn't decide what I wanted. The savvy bartender asked me about 5 different questions about what kind of drink I was in the mood for, left me for about 5 minutes and came back with the most delicious drink I'd ever had. He even wrote down the recipe of his made-up creation for me! Can't wait to return!"

  • "I went to Colt & Gray for an off-Valentine's day Valentine's day celebration. I had read that the drinks were great, but the food so-so in many reviews. I agree that the drinks were excellent with some unique offerings, but I also really enjoyed the food. We really played to the restaurant's strengths in the sense that we ordered specialties -- charcuterie, sweet meats, and the daily pork special. Everything was delicious; I'm just sad I was so full by the time my delicious and huge pork entree arrived! The restaurant was plush and comfortable, allowing it to feel cozy and romantic while the bar still manages to feel trendy and vibrant."

  • "We arrived about an hour and a half before our reservation to hang at the bar. Bar service was excellent as well as the drinks and appetizers. We were seated at our table 15 minutes before our reservation. Service once we got to our table fell off a bit, but for the most part was pretty good. Our meal arrived very quickly and was good but not great. Dessert on the other hand was absolutely amazing. The sticky toffee pudding was by far the best thing we ate. Overall it was a good experience and I would recommend to others."

  • "My husband dined here in early Jan 2014. The food was superb. I had the chicken and risotto and my husband had the char. Both were delicious. It is easy to see why this is rated as one of the top restaurants in 5280 magazine. It was one of the best dinners I have had in Denver. The atmosphere was classy and romantic. I can't wait to go back."

  • "Came in for a ladies night with a close friend. Started the night with a wonderful charcuterie plate. The service was on point and extremely helpful. Adam was able to recommended a beautiful bottle of wine that paired perfectly with our entire meal. After snacking on our charcuterie, we moved on to a salad and the bone marrow. I had already decided that I didn't want to try the bone marrow, but my friend's reaction to how delicious it was convinced me to give it a try. I'm glad it did, because we couldn't get enough of it! For dinner, we shared the Lobster Fricassee, which was a perfect blend of a light creamy broth, root vegetables, and a generous portion of fresh lobster. To end the meal, a wonderful potted cheesecake. It was perfect!"

  • "We had an absolutely wonderful dining experience at this restaurant. Our server was friendly without being in our way, very knowledgeable about all the food and drink items, and timely with delivery of food. I was encouraged to try something new and different, the squab, with the promise from the manager that if i didn't like it, he would replace the meal with something else. I of course loved it! Great place all around, I highly recommend it."

  • "Unfortunately while I had high expectations, they were shattered by the poor meal. I had the short ribs and you had to saw the meat off the bone and there was barely 2oz of beef in total that wasn't sinuous fatty tissue. My guest had the strip steak that was grey in color ...bad beef purveyor or inexperienced chef?"

  • "A perfect spot for a casual, cozy dinner. The service was wonderful, the cocktails delicious, and the housemade charcuterie and generously portioned cheese plate were out of this world. Sat in the bar area after turning up (very) late for our reservation and enjoyed impeccable and cheerful attention from the wait staff. Though I don't live in Denver, I will make Colt & Gray a go-to destination the next time I'm in Colorado for the lamb tartare alone. All around simply excellent!"

  • "The Colt and Gray is the place to go for fresh, antibiotic free superb food! My husband and I eat to the Paleo diet and this food was perfect - but even if you don't know what that is - this is the place to eat. All the dishes were terrific. Bring your credit card as each course is a charge - but it is so worth it and is still reasonable. The atmosphere is great and the service was also superb! The bartender can make you anything you want - or tell him your craving and he can come up with the perfect drink. If you want a little music, cheese and drinks they have a lounge downstairs that is also perfect. I recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants fresh wonderfully prepared food."
