  • "I had the lamb shank. Veggies were tasty. Lamb was tender, but it was a bit lacking in rich flavour. Lamb shank portion was a bit on the small side. Dessert was okay, wine by the glass choices were good. Service was a bit slow, even though there weren't a lot of people that night. I have been to Bonterra many times. I was somewhat disappointed this time in the food and service. It's usually been a great place. Maybe this was an off night. I hope it does not slip into mediocrity."

  • "Food was great - the main reason we continue to come back to Bonterra. We arrived at about 1250 pm, near the end of the lunch rush. Our reservation was for 1 pm, but we were seated right away. It took about 10 minutes for our server to greet us and take our order. Given that lunch rush was ending, the wait did not concern us too much. Finished our meal at about 1:45, and again waited another 10 minutes before we could get his attention so that we could settle our bill and be on our way. By that time the restaurant was fairly empty so we were a little disappointed to have to wait so long. Many thanks to his fellow server for helping him clear the table so we could pay and get on with our day."

  • "good experience overall, but certain menu items (such as an entree I wanted and a appetizer) were not available. Pasta dish I had was tasty, but not incredible. The cocktail was extremely good, service was excellent and the appetizers we ended up ordering were delicious."

  • "Bonterra is one of our favourites. The prepare the food consistently well and the service is generally pretty great. This visit we shared the meatballs to start (always delish) and I had a lamb pasta dish as a main while my date had the steak special. His steak was okay but nothing extraordinary (although he said it did satisfy his steak craving). Gelato was tasty for dessert too! The service was good on this visit but we've both had better. Overall though its a great spot for a date night."

  • "The food was very fresh and tasty, great potato leek soup. We both had pasta; mine was with rabbit and the flavors meshed beautifully. My friend always has spaghetti and meatballs at Italian restaurants, and this is his favourite of them all. The service is friendly, but I wouldn't go here if I was in a rush. Prices are reasonable and the Chianti was very good."

  • "Kept it simple and ordered some appetizers as share plates. Service was spot on, two plates were fresh and delicious. I have heard complaints about the simplicity of the food and wine lists but in my opinion, this simplicity leads to focus and superb execution. Their take on Calamari is very Mediterranean with inclusion of raisins, pickled vegetables and no breading. I like this originality in what seems to be a sea of sameness in most Italian food in Calgary. Worthy of a visit"

  • "We arrived at 1130 and the music was far, far too loud for the small number of patrons in the restaurant. We were a party of three and we had a hard time carrying on a conversation among ourselves. The music was very loud and the quality of the speakers (as far as I can tell that was part of the problem) was poor. The result was an uncomfortable level of noise. It was loud/uncomfortable enough that I would think twice about booking again. The food was very good but the service was just average. Empty plates sat in front of us and it should have been clear to any server that we were having a meeting and that space on the table for our booklet/notes would have been appreciated. Please pay attention and pick up the empty plates!"

  • "I had opportunity to eat lunch at Bonterra's two days in a row (I know, a person can get chunky). I love this restaurant, however, the service these two times was poor. On the first day the server seemed to barely stand serving, forgot to bring all of the beverages, leaving the others to get cold while waiting ... waiting ... and waiting. Cream was the second long wait. The second day was much better, but still they do not listen carefully to the clientele and mistakes in the order were made. Love this restaurant though. It may have been an off-day for the second day server as she was bright and cheery."

  • "A table for two by the bathroom - the smell of disinfectant in the air, which the waiter couldn't smell. The partition in our room was for a birthday party for 20-30 people - "what did you say?!!" A waiter brings the entree special as an appetizer - nope, we ordered the "appetizer special". He begrudgingly took it back and said we might have to wait for the correct order (a cold dish) to come. After eventually receiving the check (after a loooong wait), I had a nice $45 parking ticket for the restaurant lot - turns out the parking receipt I displayed was only valid for 2 hours. It might have been nice to know, especially since the staff told me after they've all had tickets too. On a positive note: excellent calamari!"

  • "This restaurant was referred to by my friend. My boyfriend and I went out for a celebratory night and reserved a table Friday night for Saturday dinner. We were lucky enough to get a table for 530. There were still some open tables when we left at 8 and would have preferred a little later reservation but the website did not have any available. I guess it's a catch 22, book an earlier reservation and guarantee a table or walk in at prime time and hope there's tables available. We had the Risotto cakes and hummus for appetizers and I had the Carbonara and he had the Pumpkin Ravioli. Everything was really good but the pumpkin ravioli was GREAT! We are looking forward to going back in the summer to enjoy wine and dinner on the patio."

It was an excellent choice, my friend had the calamari which she said was lovely. I had a glass of wine and my friend and I then had coffee. We really enjoyed the vibrancy as the venue was full. The service was excellent and we thoughly enjoyed our lunch"

  • "I love Bonterra. It's got a charm to it that keeps me coming back - carpaccio here is good although it's not quite tender / thin enough to separate with a fork. Flavours in it are wonderful though. I had the crepe dish and it was truly phenomenal. Loved it!!! There seems to be confusion / delays getting sat between the front and rear entrance, and there was a stand alone hutch / glass in the middle of the hall right behind our table which was awkward."

  • "We took out-of-town friends here for a Friday lunch. We have eaten here before and found the food to be very good to excellent but not this time. Two of us had the special, Chicken Cacciatore. The chicken was average, the mushroom polenta it was served with was very good and the green beans were pretty much raw. I like my veggies tender crisp but why do some chefs insist on overdoing this? One of our guests had the pasta carbonara with wild boar bacon. She asked the waiter for extra parmesan cheese and she was 2/3 finished her meal before he brought her some. Her comment was it wasn't as good as that which she'd had in Milan the preceding summer. The other diner was satisfied with his pasta dish. Very high prices for lunch."

  • "The ambiance was very nice, the service was great, the wine selection was extensive. However the food was very disappointing. We went there for The Big Taste which was a 3-course meal however there was no selection and we do not like salmon which was the starter, nor do we like meatloaf which was the main course. (Elk Meatloaf??) So we ended up ordering a la carte which cost us much more than anticipated. We both had the penne and found it too salty, the sausage fatty and there was no sauce at all. My companion really enjoyed the Tiramisu ($10). Most other dishes had very unusual ingredients; there were no typical Italian dishes. Perhaps the more adventurous diners would like the menu but we were disappointed and will not be returning."

  • "This was my second time to Bonterra. We went to try the Big Taste Restaurant week menu, but our waiter talked us out of it. Overall the meal was good, but I don't think we ordered very well. In the end we regretted not having the set menu. I ordered the calamari, which I'd had at my previous visit to Bonterra, and it wasn't nearly as good and inconsistent from the last time (slivered vs. full almonds, different olives, etc.) However, the arctic char was amazing."

  • "Went there with my coworkers to try out their Big Taste Menu. The server was awesome. He took great care of our group and accommodated us with a smile with every request. He knows what great service is truly about. The food came out with good timing as we only had an hour lunch, and it was a 3 course meal. The salmon appetizer came with a garlic panna cota, such a lovely pairing, it was small but the perfect amount. The meatloaf came out with beets and mashed potatoes, it was delicious!! I especially loved the beets. Then the dessert came out.. wow delicious!! Not too bitter or sweet, perfection truly. He even offered to pack up our dessert in case we were in a rush to leave. Loved the whole ambience of this lovely restaurant. Try it out!"

  • "We went to Bonterra Trattoria for The Big Taste event and had a set menu. Food was very tasty, but salty. Atmosphere was very nice. Waiter was arrogant and rude. Asked for the house red for $40. He told us it was terrible and I should try a bottle that was priced at $70, that was much better. Talk about up selling. Wonder if the owner knows he is telling customers that the house wine is terrible. Don't think he'd appreciate that. Asked about the set menu and if he would recommend it. Replied....Didn't know. Had not tried it. Aren't waiters supposed to know about their restaurant's menu? Not attentive. Had to pour our own second glass of wine. Not friendly."

  • "Very good value at $25/head for an interesting 3- course meal. The flavours were subtle and delicious, the courses well paced and we felt satisfied, but not over full. We were in the side room that was fairly quiet, a rarity in Calgary restaurants and that added to our enjoyment of a very pleasant evening."

  • "Best place to go in the summer because of your patio. The menu in the summer is better suited for me than now. Was not really able to see what I wanted on the menu for lunch. Wanted an interesting salad with a protein but there was nothing. The specials were all to heavy. Heavy on the bread. Would have loved a salad with fish. Since there was no options I chose the veal meatballs. Somehow not what I expected. Not that they were not good just not expecting a plain bowl of meatballs. Imagined meatballs on a oblong plate with a few vegetables or olives or something. So not really what I thought it would be. The cappuccino was alright. Not very strong and too much milk and not hot. A little disappointing."

  • "Nothing jumped out at me about my first visit to Bonterra. The food was good but about on-par for the price range. The service failed to honor the modification request to my food (no capers) which I thought would've been easy given it was simply a salad. The atmosphere was loud and tough to have a conversation, but that's pretty usual for downtown at lunch. Service was prompt and attentive and polite if somewhat distracted throughout the service. Wine list was pleasingly focused on italian wines (a rare treat from Italian restaurants). Overall average experience. Not outstanding but would go back again."
