The Tower Bar Ratings and Reviews
There was a fixed menu of $165 per person for food that generously would come out to $75 on any other night. And nobody told us ahead of time there was a prix fixe menu. It wasn't disclosed on Open Table. When we arrived, the hostess told us to go back and someone would meet us and seat us. We did as told and nobody arrived so we took a seat. The place was empty and we were the only ones there. So we sat in a decent place. A waiter gave us menus, served water and then a maitre d came over and asked us who sat us there. We said nobody was around, so we sat ourselves. He moved us to another place because of some reason. In the new seats (lame, away from the piano, away from the windows) we endured two change overs of primary waiter (normally not a big deal). The entire night, we were served the wrong courses, we were served without explanation of what things were -- blah blah, first world problems, I know, but for the hard core price, you would think they'd polish it up A LOT. I could go on, but I've invested enough in this experience. (e.g who serves oysters with onions as an appetizer on Valentines Day? How tonally off key can you get?)
Cristos, our server, was a true gentleman and an asset to the establishment / hotel. He set an accommodating tone from the outset, and certainly made our evening and experience exponentially better. Not that I don’t love this place, and frequent it, but this was the first time we had the great fortune to meet Cristos, and I would encourage all of you to request him if you go.
Cocktails - Moscow Mule & The Tower were delicious
Starter - Crab Cakes - one of the best I’ve had in LA.
Entree’s - scallops - amazing. Huge, perfectly cooked / prepared, and delicious.
Fillet Mignon - ordered just a little over medium, and while it was cooked perfectly temperature-wise, the cut I had was lacking flavor. Strange as it Hadn’t been an issue in the past, but a minor thing overall.
Sundae bar desert is one of my fave options in this town, and an old school treat.
Dimitri - the Sunset Tower legend - was welcoming and accommodating as always, and it was a pleasure to see you again sir!
Great atmosphere, great experience, and highly recommended if you’ve never had the pleasure.
This place has, sadly, gone way downhill. We had rude and inconsiderate service from the moment we were seated until the final bill arrived. If you want slow, incompetent, uncaring and inattentive service of mediocre fare, this is your place! And it isn’t the first time, either. This was us giving a second chance after a similar experience last year.
The ambiance was great, food very good and food service good but the front desk was awful. I came early (5:30)before my friend arrived and warned to have a drink at the bar or at the table and was refused (absolutely, I could only go to a "lounge" where there were no people and waited 15 minutes to exactly 6:00 to be seated at the bar where they hadn't even finished setting up
We have gone to Sunset Tower more times than I can count. We have always had the best experience. Tonight was the absolute WORST!!! My family and I will never return, unless we receive an apology from their food and beverage director. She was outright nasty. My husband and I will be contacting her superior tomorrow. Couldn’t be more disappointed. Sunset Tower was our “Cheers” not any more!!! 😞
We went for a Christmas meal at 2:15. The web site was misleading, as the lunch menu does not open, so I thought that the dinner menu would be available at that time. I even called to clarify, as we were looking for something festive. The person on the phone said that the specials started at 4; the regular menu would be available at our reserved time. In fact, only a fairly minimalist lunch menu was available. The food was good, but not festive. Sundaes were the only choice for dessert. It was pleasant, but not the experience we were hoping for, despite some effort on my part to validate this prior to the day.
The Tower Bar has always been one of my favorite places in LA.
The service and food used to be exquisite.
On Christmas Eve, however, I found it to be disappointing.
Even though I had made a reservation, we were made to wait at the bar for 1,5 hours, where we paid a steep 50$ for 2 martinis. Once we were seated I could tell that Dimitri did not recognize me even though I used to be a regular and treated me very impersonal.
Our waiter Jim was great and attentive as always but unfortunately the food was very mediocre.
The spicy tuna wasn’t spicy, the medium rare steak was cooked through, the sauce didn’t go with the meal, and the mashed potatoes were bland. The truffle fries had too much truffle and were too greasy.
All in all, not the Christmas I had hoped for.
Might have to find a new favorite place in LA...
We went for Christmas Eve and it was superb in every way. Busy, but the staff were completely at their best, the food great.
The ambience for the Holiday evening was perfect as well. it could not have been better. This is my second time there, having opened and closed the restaurant one evening a month or so ago. The Manager and his staff are really to be commended.
I took my boyfriend here last year for his birthday and we had an amazing time. So I brought him back again this year, and it was just as wonderful. Barbara Cameron made sure we were well taken care of. And Billy, the waiter, was just perfect--attentive, nice in a low-key way, smart about the food and wine. Very happy we came. We'll be back.
I took a friend to the Tower Bar for her birthday. The staff was incredibly attentive. The fried chicken was delicious and would gave any restaurant in the south a run for their money. The sundaes were amazing, we really enjoyed picking all of the toppings. Lovely ambience, great food.
The Tower Bar is one of my favorite restaurants. The ambience is great as is the service and the food. You can't beat Dimitri for matre'd - he always makes you feel special. The service is always professional - there when you need them and otherwise very inconspicuous. I have been going to The Tower bar for years and it never disappoints.
