About The Marine Room

For generations of San Diegans, the “Seahorse” symbol of The Marine Room has long stood for its dramatic on-the-surf location and award-winning cuisine by Executive Chef Bernard Guillas and Chef de Cuisine Ron Oliver. Considering this rare blend of culinary excellence, uncompromising service and beachfront setting, it’s no wonder The Marine Room has become a true San Diego landmark. Simply stated, this is fine dining at its finest. Opened in 1941, The Marine Room quickly became famous as pounding surf created dramatic displays against the restaurant's windows. For more than half a century, celebrities, world figures, residents, and visitors have made it a habit to enjoy the spectacular panoramic views of the Pacific and exceptional cuisine. We invite you to San Diego's premier dining destination and experience how each tide brings something new to The Marine Room. You’re not reserving a table – you’re joining a 70-year tradition.

The location has a beautiful view of the ocean. We were there at night and the waves were being lit up by the restaurant which was gorgeous. The food was on the pricey side, but absolutely delicious. The service was very friendly and they took my allergies into account.
We received a complimentary Lobster Bisque soup, which was very nice and very delicious.

Came to celebrate our 38th wedding anniversary. Food and service were outstanding. My wife’s halibut was cooked to perfection. Our server was fabulous. Glad we came!

Very good. Small, pretty portions! You will want dessert because of small portions. The ice cream pie is amazing!

We timed our reservation to be there for sunset and it was gorgeous. The service was impeccable, and each of the four of us had entrees that had been suggested by our waiter and we were not disappointed.

Went here for Valentines Day dinner. They had a pre-fix menu. We were seated 20 minutes late, we did not get to order until 45 minutes after arrival. The service was slow and they tried to keep us happy by serving bread. The appetizer was good but the rest was at best OK. If you have a known set of guests and a pre-fix menu and cannot deliver. When can you deliver? It was a major disappointment and then for Valentines Day. What a letdown. Safe to say we will not be going back.

Service was incredibly poor for $150 per person. Waited 20 minutes after reservation time to be seated only after being told by hostess that we were next on list 3 times with canned response to avoid the obvious. Never received any refills on water, waiter never made an attempt to ask how our meal was, only an impatient walk by to another table. Food was lacking any substance for a pre-planned menu set by restaurant. We have been here a couple times previously and we received better service at Buca de Beppa!!

Twice we had to send back course that were served the instant the previous course was completed. Rushing customers in a restaurant known for DINING is anathema. We will not repeat this expensive, unhappy experience.

Food is over-priced, service is not good, especially with such a pricey restaurant. If you are aiming for the view, then you might find it worthy. Otherwise, not recommended

Sadly, the dinner was a birthday celebration. I had requested a window table as it was our first time at the Marine Room. We were seated at a table in the middle of the room, table 11 I think. There were three empty window tables during the majority of our meal.
The food was fine, nothing over the top amazing but nothing horrible either. I found the server’s frequent reference to ‘tap water’ when we did not purchase the Evian or Pelligrino quite funny.
Aside from seating location not a bad experience, but I don’t see a need to go back or recommend it as a dining option.

Will open with I have gone to the Marine Room for years, great view, food can be marginal!
THE CURRENT MANAGEMENT IS TERRIBLE!
They canceled my reservation so I had to re-book for a different time. Food came out dead cold. Asked them to warm it up; finally a manger came by and started arguing with me; So I got my check and warmed up food 1.5 hrs later; so I did not eat my dinner; paid my bill and left.
I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO THE MARINE ROOM UNTIL THE MANAGEMENT HAS BEEN FIRED!

Great waterfront setting with view of ocean waves against shoreline. Professional servers dressed in Classic suit & tie with Service white napkin on sleeve. Food presentation is 5 Star Dining, swordfish was well presented however quite dry, given the reputation and obvious level of culinary expertise I’m guessing my plate (dry side) was probably out of the norm.

Order the layered frozen ice cream pie (mud pie) for desert as it’s simply the best I’ve ever eaten and; I’ve had many!

Prior to our trip to San Diego, I had seen the Marine Room in an article about great restaurants in the regions, but had opted to go elsewhere for my wife's 50th birthday. When those plans abruptly changed, I was thrilled to get a table at the Marine Room. The view is definitely a major plus, being as close as I've ever been to the water without being on a pier! But what made the evening was the food and the service. The menu created quite a conundrum when it came to choosing our dinner with an incredible array of dishes. In the end, we went with the recommendations of our server, Aaron (specifically the sesame-coated Ahi tuna, which we both ordered and LOVED). Their wine list is extensive with a great variety of styles AND a great variety of prices. Our server, Aaron, not only gave us some excellent recommendations (based on HIS favorites and not what sells or is popular), but he also was as good of a server as we have experienced, keeping very close attention to us and our needs without being intrusive. After our experience at the Marine Room, we now have one more restaurant we HAVE to visit whenever we are in the San Diego region!

An unique experience. The restaurant is right on the beach in La Jolla. It has glass facing the water, and the sunset and waves are truly breathtaking. A-1 service and probably the best meal I've had in a while. Impressive.

My wife and I came here for our 8 years anniversary for the first time. We were literally seated in front of a booth table were these two couple was seated and facing us. It was awkward because we were the only table infront of them. it looks like they were looking at us eating the whole time. Our glass of water was empty for a long time, even our wine glass. Our server only checked up on us once. The food was good and valet person was friendly.

This is a cozy restaurant with a beautiful ocean view in desperate need of a makeover. The food was good, but was obviously lacking oversight from chefs and felt tired. The bread was barely edible.

Our meals were beautifully presented by impeccable wait staff..... the acoustics are challenging. To the left of us, a table with a woman who had a louder voice and many expletives beginning with "f" and to the right of us, people doing face time with loved ones in another country. Mostly the woman with foul language who filled the space, was a sad commentary of how one person can invade the experience of others in a public space. Couple this with our $200 bill for 2, (included tip) made the meal memorable, but the experience one I would not want to repeat. We did get a window seat and enjoyed watching the tide come in toward our window. Lovely display of nature.

Went for High Tide Breakfast. Got lucky because we got seated next to the window. Last time during SDRW we didn't get good seats. Food was delicious.

The breakfast buffet for the high tide event is not really very good. Not even the desserts. So expensive for such a lackluster breakfast. If you want to see waves crash on the windows, don't spend that much to eat here. There is never a guarantee of seeing that. I went during an extra high tide and the water was calm... Only saw one big wave. We were celebrating our anniversary and the only special attention we got was the hostess saying, "happy anniversary." If you want a beautiful place with a special message you can post on your IG account, don't come here. Also it is hard to take nice pictures at that time of the day at the restaurant as the lighting isn't good. I regret celebrating here. Also the service was bad, we didn't know what was going on. They didn't mention there was an omelette bar, so we missed out on that. My husband was so sad he missed out because we found out about it once we were full.

Went on the last day of restaurant week, (had been there once before a couple of years ago). We found the service and cuisine still top notch. My wife had branzino and I, the filet mignon.
Both dishes were outstanding as was the service. Would highly recommend this eatery. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the incredibly beautiful view of our wonderful ocean.
