The Izakaya Ratings and Reviews
They kind of messed up the reservation, said it was for 5:30, and they gave away my table. But i had the text that said it was for 5:45. They got us a table within 5 minutes and had very attentive service. Korean kalbi ribs were tasty but a little tough. My husband and son both enjoyed their tempura meals, the sushi roll and spicy edamame. Its a little hotter that the one served at sushi café on Alhambra.
Very good value! It is not a place for a romantic dinner but it is a great place for any day dinner. Service is great, very attentive waiters. They serve a fantastic cucumber salad as you are sitting down, really refreshing and tasteful.
We had a few rolls and they were pretty good; my favorite was the double salmon roll.
Really great value around 40 dollars for a lot of food: 3 starters and 3 large rolls! Coming back soon!
We arrived for happy hour and were told rather abruptly we wouldn't be seated until everyone in our party was here. From the name and menu I thought this was a Japanese restaurant but it appears most of the foreign staff and owner are not. We had difficulty understanding the staff as English is not their first language.
One person in our party ordered a sushi roll but asked that it have no avocado. When our rolls arrived, mine also did not have avocado and when I said I had ordered mine the regular way she appeared flustered and then said she would bring some avocados on the side. I said I would really prefer it inside my roll and she did have them remake my roll. However the brown special sauce on the various rolls, while it tastes ok, is very thick and gooey and doesn't seem right.
The pepper fin at $5 is a great deal. In fact all the happy hour menu items at $5 are a great deal. So while the taste and quality are average and if you can get past the waitstaff service, I would probably return for happy hour.
When you go to a Japanese restaurant and 3/4th of the customers are Japanese, that is a very good sign. The fish was the freshest I have had in awhile. The service was down-home Japanese; very friendly and courteous. The atmoshphere is casual and very comfortable. I seriously thought they left something off the bill; the prices are VERY reasonable. It would have been a find at twice the price.
The food is good for the price. Kumamoto oysters - 4 for $8 were great! The server I had was excellent. The other servers were good too. People behind the counter were not friendly and courteous enough. As I was leaving or even when I left the payment, none of them said, "Thank you so much, please come again." or none of that. Isn't that basic? The supplies on the shelf above the counter ruins the ambiance. Tables were clean but there were all kinds of junk on the floor. They should be picked up every time customers leave - Again, very basic.
place needs management w a presence. Food could be a 5star, but place just can't get it together and is pretty empty a 7. Chef is very good, but not supported in a way he can achieve a really high rating. Everything is perfunctory rather than wow. Owner manager never there.
Staff has not a clue what Open Table is, hence, don't even check you in. Unfortunately lack of business means one doesn't even need a reservation. Chef needs support to meet his potential here.
This was our first time to eat at this restaurant. We had sushi. The food was good, but nothing about it stood out to make it great or outstanding. The restaurant itself was basic, but clean. Service was timely. We would not discourage anyone from eating there. I believe they would get a good, satisfactory meal. However, it is unlikely that we would recommend The Izakaya as a sushi restaurant of first choice.
Great Happy Hour menu offered Monday - Saturday , a great deal! $5.00 for Ramen bowls and a large selection of sushi rolls. Savings is around 30% - 50% when ordering from this menu... Bento box choices are endless starting at $8.00 * $11.00 each and many more to chose from. Parking is limited on weekends due to neighboring restaurants and at times the help can be slow to bring your check. Other than spotty service at times, this is a great spot to frequent.
When I got to the Izakaya, they didn't even show a reservation in my name! I was told that they get an automated phone call from Open Table, and a message is left. I don't even know why they accept reservations with Open Table if they are not going to honor them. We ended up waiting 20 minutes for a table. The food was okay, the service was great (other than no reservation). It was just irritating that they didn't have my reservation.
