The Italian Barrel
Authentic food is an understatement - this is the real thing.
Chilean Sea Bass al Cartoccio
10 oz. Center cut Fresh Chilean Sea Bass filet dusted with ground herbs, spinach, fingerling potatoes, zucchini, squash and cherry tomatoes. Roasted in parchment paper
Chef Samantha's Fusilli Pasta
Delicate white cream sauce with peas, shallots and Italian speck prosciutto
Spaghetti and Veal Meatball
Veal meatball slow roasted in San Marzano tomatoe sauce tossed with spaghetti pasta
Tables near the front or outside are further from the restrooms, which is good
We had the spaghetti with veal meatball and a lamb special. It was divine! Every bite, from the bread and balsamic to the white wine sauce over the perfectly tender lamb chops was just delicious. We sat outside because the weather was beautiful and the atmosphere was as good as the food. Nice spot. Really impressed!
Best kept secret downtown! Will definitely be back. Authentic, original Italian food! Drinks are unique
Kendall was great and full of personality. We were lucky to have her as server. The manager on duty was there to assist as it appeared that she was handling all 8 tables. The two disappointing aspects of dinner were the long wait times to get food from kitchen to table and subsequent food temperature. Two pasta dishes involving shrimp and crab meat took 55 minutes from order to table with one of the dishes only being warm. The delay also occurred with the clam appetizer. Everything being delicious made up for it but not quite worth the price tag. Again great bubbly service from Kendall and the manager but way too long on ticket times for a 50% full restaurant.
We had a very mixed experience at the Italian Barrel. We dined there on a Sunday evening. When the waiter came by we let him know that my wife was gluten free. We were very surprised to learn that the restaurant had almost no gluten free options. In addition they did very little to accommodate her gluten free diet, telling us that almost every menu item was pre-prepared in the kitchen with either bread crumbs or flour. We eat out often in Italian restaurants in the US and throughout Italy and almost never find a restaurant that does not have at least one variety of gluten free pasta. In addition, after we ordered our meal, my wife ended up ordering 2 salads, we heard the waiter reading the specials to another table. We were never told of the specials.
On the positive side the wine list, especially the wines by the glass is excellent. They have a wide variety of quality Italian wines. I ordered a ravioli dish which was very good. They were prepared perfectly al dente with a light, flavorful red sauce.
While in New Orleans we ate at some of the city’s finest restaurants (GW Fins, Galatoires, Commanders Palace), but the Italian Barrel had by far with highest prices of the group. With fewer courses and drinks our meal at the Italian Barrel was our most expensive of the week.
It was a birthday... they didn’t acknowledge it
We arrived the host closed the door on us and told us to wait outside.
Pasta didn’t taste fresh was chewy
Avocado was black on tuna salad so we asked to take home
“They accidentally threw it away” we had to wait 40 minutes for a new one after we had paid the bill
They didn’t have a bus boy to refill water or removed empty plates....sorry we went
Great food and service. Would recommend it. They have outdoor seating also.
Great food & atmosphere. A true New Orleans gem! We will definitely be coming back.
The restaurant was very quaint. I had the spinach and ricotta ravioli and would highly recommend it. My daughter had the chicken parmigiana and thought it was ok. the linguini in the creamy white wine sauce was excellent though. I would definitely eat there agian.
We sat out in the patio. It was really cold. The wait staff did their very best to take care of us.
Was just a real tough Valentine dinner; being put outside in 40 degree weather. Never was asked if outside would be ok, upon turn calling yo confirm, or when we checked in. We were completely frozen by the time our main course got there. The food was quite good I think.. but was so cold, hard to enjoy it.
Perfect ambiance for Valentines Day Dinner. Food was as
fabulous as the service.
horrible service, they made me wait 30 mins after my rez to get a seat, took forever to bring food and forgot some of my orders...
So romantic, perfectly prepared pesto e scampi preceded by bresaola, accompanied with luscious sangiovese, Thank you chef Samantha Castagnetti and waitstaff!
Wine and drinks were awesome. 8 out of 10 (A little over priced).
I ordered the special which was a filet with lobster chucks and cheese. The cheese was on top of the filet and it was not good at all and my wife order the ravioli which was ok. (Food 3 out of 10)
Service- felt really rushed by our waitress. (Service 4 out of 10)
Location was awesome! 8 out of 10
Wouldn’t recommend my friends to go besides to get drinks.
Overall experience was extremely bad. Service was extremely lacking as the waitress was new and not familiar with the menu. Food service was slow and when it did arrive was not flavorful and appeared to be heated up in the microwave.
We got the cheese and meat plate which was just okay as none of the meats or cheeses were anything special. We then got the veal meatball which was undercooked and just crumbled when touched. Mariners sauce was watered down and not seasoned.
I got the chicken parmigiana and it was burned on the bottom with the entire underside being black from pan frying it. It had no discernible taste and I had to add salt just to eat it. My wife got the filet with Gorgonzola sauce and it too was flavorless and the sauce tasted extremely watered down. We had one of the Italian wines that was recommended but the waitress and it too was lacking. Very disappointing wine selection overall as they only stock Italian wines and a very limited selection.
Finely we got the homemade tiramisu which was again disappointing and was very dry and without flavor.
We were extremely disappointed with our visit and will not be back as there are so many better options in the area like Irene’s.
My boyfriend and I visited the Italian Barrel during our trip to New Orleans. The restaurant was clean, the decor was beautiful, and the food was great. Would definitely visit again.
My fav Italian place in Nola. Love the pumpkin ravioli and lasagna. Love the service and atmosphere
Food was amazing and service was excellent. Would definitely go back
Always a wonderful experience and a delicious meal.
The wine and cocktails and cheese/meat board were 5-Star all the way. Our entrees, Gnocchi w/ Gorgonzola and Veal Porcini were somewhat average. While my veal entree was cooked and presented perfectly, it lacked depth and complexity and could have been enhanced simply with a little salt or other flavor contrast. I would have added salt myself, but both salt and pepper grinders at our table were empty and I assume were for display only.
The restaurant is very cozy. It was difficult for my wife and I to converse during our meal without constantly asking the other to repeat themself. Our server was very attentive, professional, polite, and personable. I will definitely go back and try another entree because everything else was so great.
Just as great as always! Great food, great service. Definitely not a quite spot, but fantastic date night.
Mardi Gras Marshal’s Luncheon
Excellent food. But too pricey.
I made a reservation for 7 people ten days in advance of our dinner. Earlier in the week leading up to our Saturday dinner, the restaurant called to see if we wanted to move our party from outdoor seating to indoor seating. I agreed that it may be better for our group, and the hostess confirmed. The day of the reservation, I received a call from the restaurant asking the same question from earlier in the week. I explained I’d already made this change earlier in the week. The host apologized and confirmed our reservation for that night. An hour before the reservation, I received a notification that the restaurant had cancelled our reservation. I called and the host noted it was an accident and we were set to go. Upon arrival, we were told that our table was occupied and would not be ready for another twenty minutes, even with our reservation. The host promised to get us drinks while we were waiting (outside, I might add), but that never happened. After almost 45 minutes of waiting, a woman emerged from the restaurant saying, “Fine, you can have our table! We will leave!” We found out that the host made some mistake and then kept pressuring the folks seated at our table to leave until they did and created an awkward situation with us. From that point forward, our dinner was awkward and rushed. I have been going here for years, and this was a special dinner with our of town guests. Until the staff and owners can communicate effectively, learn to use their booking system, and create a more welcoming environment, we will not be returning to what used to be a French quarter favorite.
It took an hour to receive our meal. The bread which was complimentary was cold. The waitress was sweet though.
Wait staff was attentive. My selection Gnocchi DiPatate in gorgonzola cheese sauce was a disappointment. Gnocchi came drowning in the sauce to the point that I didn't even know there was anything in the bowl but a heavy cream sauce until I swirled my fork in it. The space is small and when crowded can be quite loud.
The restaurant was awesome! Food, Service and Ambiance... A must when visiting NOLA.
Excellent variety of menu. Veal and chicken entrees were excellent. Salad and appys were fresh and delicious. All COVID protocols were adhered to.
Amazing service! The food is divine! Always the perfect t meal! The buratta ❤️🤍💚
The only purely Italian cuisine restaurant in the city. An authentic experience.
This is one of the most authentic Italian restaurants in the City of New Orleans.
I thought my server was great! And the food was great. What I did not like was being sat in the back near the wait station hidden and where I could here the other servers snarky and sarcastic remarks. I felt I was sat there because I'm young. It did not make me feel welcomed. I felt very awkward when waiting on my friend.
Waitress was fantastic! I truly believe when your paying TOP DOLLAR for food, the food should come out hot and at the same time. The prices are inflated I truly believe because of the location of the restaurant being in the French quarter. This was my second time there and I believe they have o
Better choices for the value.
One of my favorite restaurants in Nola. Yum!!!!!
Johnny our server was a delight, food was delicious! Ambiance for my family and I was as we had hoped, small charming and locally authentic.
This is the best Italian restaurant in The Quarter. I try to get reservations every time I am in town. Definitely make a reservation, because they are small and sometimes busy.
Waitstaff are excellent, great menu and adequate wine list. One of my favorites.
Definitely not my best experience here. I eat at Italian Barrel 2-3 times a month, but the last few times I have been there, the food was not as good as it usually is and this last time the service was barely decent.
Great service, delicious meal, definitely recommend going here for a lovely meal.
Amazing experience. The food was presented beautifully and tasted even better.
