About this restaurant

Situated in swanky Bloomsbury, within easy reach of the best of London’s West End, The Brasserie restaurant is within the Mercure London Bloomsbury Hotel. Located on the ground floor of this popular hotel, The Brasserie offers a wide selection of good, affordable food throughout the day, from a hearty full English buffet breakfast to a la carte modern European dinners and lunches plus coffees and teas with simple sandwiches in between. Clearly inspired by Parisian brasseries, the food is simple but sophisticated, combining classic cookery with contemporary style and flair, the menu including numerous favourites including excellent steaks. Surroundings at The Brasserie are similarly classic-meets-modern, the stripped wood and white surroundings pared right back to create a sense of light and space, the furnishings extremely simple but comfortable, the atmosphere buzzy and cheerful.

We were quite disappointed with the service when we entered the restaurant. We had to go find someone to seat us as there was no one present for at least 5 minutes when we arrived. We were seated and the Maitre'D gentleman came over and asked my husband why his face looked grumpy. I thought this was a bit inappropriate seen as we'd already been made to wait. We ordered our food.... The calamari was good but the french onion soup was quite watery with hardly any onions in. My husband ordered the medium cooked fillet steak which came out well done so we informed the wait staff who did offer to change it but we didn't have the time to wait. The Maitre'D offered us a free drink instead. I had the Coq au Vin and the chicken was very crisp and dry. I assumed maybe it was the leftover chicken from the Sunday roasts the day before as we were there on a Monday. The dessert pastries were overcooked which was a shame as it ruined the rest of the dessert. Only one of the waitresses was very good. I think her name was Catarina. Overall not a great experience though and we were quite disappointed. We won't be returning.

We booked this restaurant for Sunday lunch. They served no food except sandwiches. No wonder we were the only people there! We left!

I booked this more for convenience but it was a nice surprise. Good food and good wine and not too expensive.

Visited for a quick lunch en route to a business meeting. They do a 45 minute menu - promise to be able to serve the food in that time if you are really in a hurry. Only one other table occupied so very quiet and no atmosphere. Waiter seemed to have a problem with English. However once that problem was overcome, food was good and well served. Nothing fancy, but standard British food and not unreasonable price for the area. I would keep this in mind if I need a place for a quick but good quality lunch.

Not a very Brasserie feel to the place - part of a hotel and a bit impersonal and stark. Starter good, but mains disappointing. Bland, leathery... Staff friendly.

The Brasserie at Bloomsbury has really good food. Most notably the mushroom starter. Surprisingly, it doesn't seem to draw in the crowds and the restaurant was pretty empty. Service was alright as there weren't many other tables to serve. One waitress in particular seemed to be unable to smile but she was polite nonetheless. All in all, come for the food but expect average service and ambience.

The Brasserie is a haven of tranquillity from bustling Bloomsbury, somewhere you can sit in clean, quiet surroundings and actually talk to your dinner chums without shouting. The food was very good and it was served by friendly, smiling staff, something else you don't always get in town. Many thanks.

Excellent service, pleasant food. Would advise going at weekends as on this Wednesday night there were only 4 other people in the place so the atmosphere was lacking.

Really really good food. The decor was very nice. Modern but not clinical. Service was excellent (aided by the fact that we were the only people there). Which is the only negative I can think of... Not sure why the restaurant was empty, but clearly that meant that it lacked some atmosphere. For £17 each though the quality of the food and wine was outstanding and I would definitely visit again.
