Food was indifferent and tables so low that it is impossible to get one’s knees underneath.
Absolutely gorgeous place. Great wine list, great service. One of my favourite places.
Great food and ambience at the Booking Office. Live singer was good and not too loud either so you could still chat comfortably. The menu has been recently revised and probably not as good a choice as before especially for dessert. Quality of food though was very nice.
Great food as always. Love this building.
Great venue and service
This restaurant has nice ambience but is NOT suitable for vegetarians at all. They have ONE dish on the menu for each course that is vegetarian and they refuse to make anything else when asked.
We found a long hair in the food, very disgusting! no one offered a compensation, just apologies. Never be back again.
You can't fault the service and ambiance of The Booking Office. It is beautiful there. But they could try a bit better with their food. For what you pay, it's pretty disappointing. The Shaved Porchetta is basically unappetizing lunch meat. The whole table tried it, and none of us liked it. Really, I can't imagine why someone though the Shaved Porchetta was a good idea- it is truly awful. The crab cake is a substantial dish but isn't anything special. Two members of our party ordered the Scallop Ceviche- someone should let the chef know what ceviche is because what they were served was NOT ceviche. A lovely, if incredibly small, scallop dish, but not ceviche. The Tuna Tartare was nice, and the oysters we ordered were lovely. We all also enjoyed our cocktails- Espresso Midnight is particularly good. Our server was so polite and helpful. He even removed the Shaved Porchetta from our bill. I would perhaps come back for one drink or two, but I don't recommend eating a meal here.
The service and welcome was poor - the venue was not very busy but there seemed to be a reluctance to take us to our table and serve us I think because they were completing breakfast. However the place was very quiet and service was slow
Lovely helpful staff. Great space well used. Slight issue with straights.
Our lunch was a bit of a “curate’s egg” (good in parts) Nice atmosphere. Service was amiable but a bit sloppy. The unforgivable bit was our “beef cheeks” which were obviously kept under a heater for a fair while, because the tiny amount of “jus” had evaporated, leaving something more akin to a cheap cafe lunch - hideously dry mash, with a dry hunk of meat on top - it was slightly rescued when I demanded a “job lot of jus”! Otherwise very disappointing.
Absolutely charming atmosphere and excellent service. Highly recommend the fillet - superbly done.
Food too cold and does not match the price. Service is ok. Food really cold and not tasty.
Christmas dinner at The Booking Office was mostly a disaster. Just booking the reservation from the US was challenging(required a VPN to a UK server to complete). Host did not appear to find our paid reservation for 3. She took us to our table, which was for 2, though there were clearly 3 of us. She shoved another chair in for a table that clearly was not big enough. She then told us that we only had the table for 3 hours, we certainly didn't intend for the meal to take anywhere near that long. It did. Our server came and took our choices, brought the first course and was never seen again. Each course took longer than the next and we had to ask for each course. Our original server had left and there was nobody taking over our table, though to be fair, other tables around us also appeared to be ignored. It was not crowded. Food that was served was just ok at best. When we finally left, I had to find someone to pay for the bottle of wine we had. So much for our Christmas Dinner disaster. I'm not sure what the relationship is with the Renaissance Hotel, but I would certainly avoid both! It's certainly a shame, because it its such a unique and beautiful facility.
Xmas dinner done wrong. Poor from start to finish. Looks like mum went to Iceland and charged £150 a head to rub it in.
First they couldn’t find my reservation. I had a confirmation to show them. They then told me they had tried to contact me to confirm with a deposit by phone and email (my phone has been off cell since Dec 12) but no call and no email. They managed to seat us anyway.
The food was not at all what a 5-star hotel should offer. Either not seasoned properly or just not the best ingredients or cooking. The venison inside the Wellington pastry was nicely cooked but that is about it. Give me fish and chips in a pub instead!
One of the canapés was tasty. It was a puff pastry with cheese inside. What’s not to like? The vegetables were okay but overly salted. The desserts were just strange. The small mince pies at the end were okay.
They had fun party favors that included trivia questions and 20 questions.
But while my friends and I had a nice time in general, it wasn’t work the fixed price. I’ll never go again.
Nice family dinner in this old railway station booking office. The decorum is really nice, with a beautiful bar. Food was good and service outstanding. Tables are spaced far enough that you can converse comfortably without overhearing the neighboring party while still having a nice bistro-like background noise. Really nice experience.
Whilst the location of this restaurant is great - our table of six ate off both the festive and normal menu. The food was awful - the festive turkey dinner was dry and very tough and every item had been cooked to within n inch of its life. The only food that was reasonable was the fish and chips.
The service was only not was I had expected, we had drinks rounds forgotten and the taking of our food order was not taken with knowledge of the menu or it’s contents at all.
I’ve been here before and it’s been really nice but it has really gone downhill. The staff were nice but service was really slow for everything. The food was varying in quality. There was a vegan symbol on the menu but neither of the things marked as vegan was actually vegan and so the staff had to make something special. The decor is great but not enough to justify the price on its own.
Lovely place to eat ,
Great night out for a Christmas get together. I would have given 5 stars for everything but our table was not ready when we arrived and sometimes it was a litle difficult to get the waiting staff's attention to reorder drinks etc. The food was great though as was the wine. Waiting staff very polite and friendly.
Been twice in just over a week, once for lunch and once for dinner. Totally let down by inexcusably slow service so cannot really recommend unless you have loads of time to spare.
Staff were fine. Food pretty good. Not cheap.
I arrived early for my booking and was shown my table. I went to the Ladies and when I came back someone else was seated at my table! I was shown to another table and then found out half an hour later that my guest had also arrived early and been shown to a table elsewhere in the restaurant. This meant we had missed half an hour of our meeting. Although the waitress apologised, surely this should never have happened? We then had to wait a further half an hour for our food which was OK but certainly not worth the money. The special offer of £35 for two courses seemed strange as the total price of most combinations offered was less than £35??? Not returning, so disappointed. No offer of any compensation either. A free coffee would have helped!
Probably because it is close to xmas but apart from front of house no one really cares and the food was very average in presentation and taste
It took over 3.5 hours for a 3 course meal to be served, with the waiting staff noticeably absent for much of the time. The festive turkey option lacked any substance or any taste with the gravy for red meat option rather than white (one sprout smaller than a finger nail !) other courses lacked the ingredients detailed on the menu. All in all overly expensive for a sub standard meal - venue great & were I to return a place to have drinks & no food would be my vote !
A very lively building with a great ambience. But... the service was very slow and the food average especially considering it’s not cheap.
Loved our festive menu. Music a little too loud for dinner but accommodated in the lounge for coffee and mince pies. Loved pictures on the famous stairs.
Steak over cooked
Menu had about 4 things missing
The food was delicious, and the staff were lovely, but we were waiting over an hour for our starters. Just as well we didn't have a train to catch...
Booked for 2-hour lunch meeting but front of house made it clear from the start that she wanted us out much sooner. May have been the time of year but not the place to relax. The odd thing was it then took a while to get the bill, so we did get our 2 hours.
Food was excellent. Live music very good - but we were right next to the band, so it was a little loud at times. Service was very polite and friendly but very slow.
Took my team out for Christmas lunch. Very disappointing. Beautiful place. Polite staff, but poor service. We sat early for our 12:30 reservation. Despite the fact that we were early, we were put on notice at seating that we had to give the table back in 2 hours. Ironically, we had to wait over an hour and 15 mins just to get our food which made us tense as we needed to make afternoon meetings. Staff was polite, but pace was unacceptable. We had to wolf our food, skip dessert and bolt to make the train back to work. Food was mediocre, mostly because it was on the cold side by the time it got to us. So, unfortunately, A bit of a disaster instead of a relaxing holiday lunch we were looking forward to. I did look for someone to discuss this with at the restaurant before leaving instead leaving a negative review online, but no one was available.
A gathering with old friends for Christmas drinks. Excellent service, beautiful environment.
The fish and chips were very average ,
This was our third year of coming for our ladies Christmas lunch and we enjoyed the time we spend.
If there was any complaint....It was just the food could be a little hotter , otherwise everything was lovely.
It is the perfect place for us to get to and we shall be back next year. Thank you.
Well, I booked the Booking Office because of the cool interior not knowing how the food will be.
I’ve to say I was a bit disappointed. The food is overpriced and just average. But The ambience and the cocktails are good. Next time only for drinks.
Convenient central location for a meet up with friends. Good choice on the menu. Nice comfortable atmosphere. Portion size and food disappointing. Opted for pork from Sunday roast menu with free flowing Malbec. The meat was overcooked and dry with very small portion of vegetables. Served with an oversized, dry Yorkshire pudding. There was no gravy on the plates or brought with the meal. Between 6 of us we had to keep asking and wait for this to arrive. Not once were we asked if we would like any sauces. However, in spite of this, the free-flowing wine made it reasonable value, but food was disappointing. I would choose something different next time.
We have eaten here many times before but our experience on this occasion was very poor. We waited ages for our food which when it finally arrived around 50mins after ordering was cold so sent it back and was brought out shortly reheated when we question this we were lied to and told it was fresh but my husband had taken a piece out of his meat which you clearly see it was the same dish we did complain to a manager who did give us a complimentary drink but we will not be returning there again which is a shame because we have stayed at the hotel many times.
Upon arrival they were not aware we were dining and said that I never stated it when booking.....tbh I wasn't asked. We were placed on what must have been the darkest table we had to use our phones to read the menus and just to see what our food was like.
Service was extremely slow, we felt like the forgotten table. Every course we had to ask where it was. Starters - were good but nothing special. Mains - all 5 of our dishes were barely warm. We sent them back. When new dishes arrived they were smaller in proportion and some items missing.
When we did complain they advised they would remove the service charge.
I have no intention of eating here again and would book for just drinks.
Very disappointing and expensive for what we got. I was surprised that I had to pay £10 for a non alcoholic cocktail.
