We feature “Refined Rustic” cuisine. That’s short hand for local, seasonal and prepared in house. What Grandma made but with a wider variety of ingredients, prepared for the 21st century pallet and lifestyle.
We are known for the Best Steaks on the Mountain, elk, quail. wild boar, miso salmon, fresh salad (we grow our own sprouts in house) and homemade dessert We bake bread fresh daily and even can our own fruit for dessert. We also offer vegetarian and gluten free items from our vegan garde manger.
Nestled between the Hermosa Cliffs, Engineer Mountain and the Twilight Peaks, the Sow’s Ear is well appointed and intimate, yet with four massive windows there’s not a bad seat in the house. Come join us at the Sow’s Ear Restaurant for dinner and libations and a most pleasant dining experience in the heart of the Rockies.
- Sick staff prohibited in the workplace
- Waitstaff wear masks
Nice service - the drink was ok - the dessert was sub par
The steak au poivre was excellent
Ambience and scenery was very nice
Food was good but not great, especially at the price. The au poivre sauce was mor like country gravy. Our server had 6 tables on the patio, so he couldn’t keep up with our needs at all.
Nice location. Food great. Service uneven - COVID adjustments likely responsible.
Great food with an outstanding view.
Really enjoyed our meal, our server Alex, and the attention to detail the restaurant has taken to protect everybody in this pandemic.
I have been wanting to eat at this restaurant for many many years and now that we have a family vacation here in Colorado we were finally able to get a reservation and eat at this restaurant. Everything was wonderful. Food was delicious. The service was great also.
After seeing great reviews and the menu we decided to make a point to eat here during our stay in Durango. Well from the moment we stood at the hostess stand until the end of the meal it was full of disappointments. We spent almost $400 on this dinner, for our little family of 3, so I feel compelled to write a negative review, in hopes we save another from disappointment.
The bathrooms were disgusting and unattended. The wine glasses were dirty and the menu was impressive but later discovered it was a bait and switch. I ordered the Elk, and it was covered in butter. My daughter ordered the Childrens tenderloin and she enjoyed hers, but they were unable to make a chicken breast, the waiter claimed that they had no chicken. My husband had a steak as well, again, unimpressed. We ordered desserts... again unimpressed... I ordered the apple strudel, and was looking forward to it... unfortunately it was dry and unflavorful. Also, the chocolate chip cookies with ice cream.. were uncooked! When mentioned this to the waiter, he simply said, well that’s how people like them. All in all, this place is for those who definitely don’t get out much or live near the resort and “settle” for this less than mediocre fine dining experience. We should have went to El Moro in town... from the service to the food... poor. But the wine and water was good!
Excellent food however the desserts need help. My daughter ordered the special which was pound cake with fruit. The cake was hard. The other desserts we ordered were just average. The service was also very slow. We have been here before and will come again. Just hope the service will be better and more dessert options.
Always delicious and fantastic service!
We had an amazing dinner here. The food was amazing. Atmosphere was great and the service was top notch. When we come back to Durango, we will be dining here again. Cheers!
Dinner was amazing. Cole the waiter is exceptional!!
Wonderful everything from the food to the service beautiful setting great people fabulous foid
Nice place outside Durango a local recommended. Service was good but not spectacular. We got what we needed but when asking questions waiter didn’t seem interested.
Will hit again.
Excellent food and service !! Halibut was amazing and so was bread pudding !!
Fantastic all the way around. Great dinner and evening spent with my parents and everyone was over the moon
Thanks a million.
Not a date place too many kids.
Was amazing food.
Service was great!
Salmon miso was awesome flavor
Excellent food and friendly service! Great cocktails too.
Gorgeous views of the Needle Mountains with large windows inside. Wonderful menu with varied entrees from duck to elk to beef, fish, and chicken. Very nice wine selection...although there was only one chardonnay. I had the steak au povire and it was tender enough to cut with a fork. My spouse had salmon on a bed of widely varied greens. We had a very lovely, laid back dinner as we watched the sun set on the San Juan's. Highly recommend this establishment.
the folks at sow's ear practiced social distance, wearing masks and awareness of the overall challenges during these times. They were accommodating in every way. The food was clearly outstanding. Again, it was a fantastic dining experience.
The staff made us feel like regulars. The au poivre sauce is to die for and the elk carpaccio is a must order. It was our first time and we will definitely be back.
Very good food, service & ambiance....perfect for celebrating my son’s birthday!
As always absolutely amazing. We eat here every time we are on the mountain. 20 + years of enjoyment! Everyone is always so friendly, food is always above any level of cuisine you can get anywhere. Cocktails are great ( best dirty martinis). High end wind list.
Great food, service and location for where we stayed. Wish they were opened for lunch . We had elk, fillet and quail all were delicious!
We have lived in the Durango area for 27 years and this was the first time we dined at The Sow's Ear. Since it was a special day and dual occasions to celebrate, my husband's 80th Birthday and our 44th Anniversary, we wanted to go someplace new and were delighted to discover The Sow's Ear. Reservations and service were handled efficiently; and the table chosen for us with the wonderful view of the trees and mountains added to our evening. We were a party of four and we each ordered something different. We were all happy with our meals and look forward to returning to The Sow's Ear for a "repeat performance." Nancy Macho
we were referred by friends to experience the Sow's Ear. we enjoyed the most delicious starters and main course meals and deserts from a menu that will please everyone in your party.
the owner and staff could not have been more pleasant and helpful. we booked the next night again just to try other meals and again everything was delicious.
a true must for anyone looking for the perfect place to enjoy a snack or a meal and a drink amongst the beautiful Colorado mountains.
thankyou for making the weekend extra special.
Great all around experience! Best steak I ever had!
After a disastrous meal at Sow's Ear two years ago, we decided to try it again. This was a much improved experience.
Two years ago was New Years' Eve, they were slammed. It took us three hours, many mistakes and many complaints to get our meal.
This time we were seated promptly, the servers was attentive, and the food was great. We will be back... just not on New Years.
We have been here several times, and the food has always been very good. I had an excellent petite filet with mashed potatoes and nice, crispy veggies. The bread basket is delicious. My son enjoyed the "Happy Meal" burger and my husband said his steak au poivre was delicious. We had been told by some people that the quality had gone down, but we did not experience that. I do think it is slightly overpriced for the quality of the food, but that is to be expected in a resort area.
Went here for our anniversary. The food, service and ambiance was outstanding.
Good food , great views & great service . Started with the chili cheese fries app , hearty & tasty . For the Main course we had the miso salmon , one of my favorite salmon dishes anywhere . We finished it off with the cookies & ice cream desert , thick doughy cookies go great with good ice cream !
Thanks, LolaJack, for taking the time to give us some feedback. We really appreciate hearing from our guests and learning what they like. Glad you enjoyed your meal! Chris Wing
The best food, atmosphere and service, comes from the Sow's Ear every visit. Crissie is an incredible hostess/waitress.....her memory astounds me with the orders she takes. The food is always great. And the view of the Needles is beautiful winter, summer and fall.
Thanks, terriw, for the good words. Chrissie is the best! and I'll pass your comments on. Chris Wing
Great food and great service!
Thanks for the kind words!
french onion soup was great. blueberry bread pudding was very good.
Thanks for your input. We appreciate it!
What a disappointing dinner. French onion soup was sweet and we pulled out 3 whole basil leaves. My husband had the elk and it was decent just extremely small. I had the Mash Smash...lots of tastless gravy over decent potatoes...however there were 3
small pieces of tenderloin and that was it. There is no chicken option nor any pork options. service was fair. We waited an hour for our food. Took an hour and 45 min to get food, wait, eat, and wait for check. we had a table of 10 teenagers next to us so noise level was high. This was our second visit and we will not go back. extremely over priced.
Thanks for taking the time to give us feedback. There are no Basil Leaves in the Onion Soup recipe. We weigh all meat portions. The Elk comes in at 4 oz as advertised. The Mash Smash is a six oz portion of Tenderloin and Ribeye Chunks ladled over Skin on Mashed Red Potatoes and house made Onion Rings. We offer no chicken but offer Quail instead. We offer no pork but offer Wild Boar instead. We plan on our guests spending up to two hours to dine. The teenagers returned again the next night.
I had made a reservation for 530 on Valentines Day for my wife and I. We arrived and waited in line for our turn to let the host know we were there for our reservation while waiting several people pushed their way through my wife to get through the door way to ask simple questions that were in no way urgent. My wife and I were seated when it was our turn. Once seated we were poured a glass of ice water and the menu was given to us as well as the Valentines Day special menu. It was about 5 minutes before we were asked our drink order and then probably 10-15 minutes before we were asked if we would be ordering any appetizers. We order 2 half order house salads which were amazing. We placed our dinner order and the wait on the dinner food is what took the longest, we waiting near an hour for our dinner order to be brought to us. I ordered the Valentines Special Duck Carbonara and my wife ordered the petite sirloin dinner. Nothing extravagant that would warrant that amount of wait time. I did take into consideration that it was Valentine’s Day and it was 6pm at night so I know it was busy. My experience was wonderful and the food was delicious. My only disappointment was the wait time for the food and the other patrons that were extremely rude and disrespectful to my wife.
Thanks for spending Valentine's with us at the Sow's Ear. Glad you had a "wonderful experience". We aim to make a visit to the Sows special for all of your guests. Sorry about the rude guests. We are at the resort and people can be irritable when they're tired from travel and skiing all day. Hope you enjoyed Celeste on the harp while you waited. Please come back the next time you're in the neighborhood!
Wonderful experience....great food and service.
Thanks, we really appreciate your comments! Chris Wing
Wow! We have been to the Sows Ear on three prior occasions over the last five years. Last night's dinner was arguably the best meal we have had. I enjoyed the miso salmon, my friend enjoyed the elk tenderloin and we shared the house salad. All of the dishes were out of sight. The menu is game heavy and only one veggie and one fish dish. Though we would like another of each option, we will for sure be back. Fantastic!
Thanks for the kind words, Sara. The salmon and elk are two of the most popular dishes with our guests. And our staff! Did you know we grow our own sprouts for the salad? And thanks for the suggestion about fish and vegetarian options. I'll encourage the chefs to begin experimenting with recipes on the special menu. Chris Wing
