Sow's Ear Restaurant, established in 1986, is located in the Silverpick Lodge, one mile south of Durango Mountain Resort. Set amongst the beautiful San Juan mountains, the Sow's Ear is the longest running restaurant in the area with a new owner and head chef George Mehaffie taking over in May 2008 bringing new ideas and fresh seasonal menus to the restaurant, while continuing the tradition of "the best steaks on the mountain". Come up and see us and enjoy a unique mountain dining experience.

We had a reservation for 7pm but unfortunately the table before us didn't leave until almost 8. We had three kids with us so by the time we got seated they were pretty exhausted and hungry. I would have thought the restaurant would have a better handle on seating times and if not then would offer to bring appetizers to the kids at a minimum. When we finally got seated it took forever to get our meals and a number of the orders were wrong by the time they finally arrived. It was a bit frustrating because it is not inexpensive dining but the attitude by the wait staff was pretty lacking in concern and overall the establishment didn't seem to care about our wait or the mistakes in our orders. The food was good but if it weren't for the location and proximity to where we were staying I would not opt to go again. They need to step it up in terms of service.

We were staying at the Purgatory resort and this is the best dining close to the resort. The menu had a great variety. The specialty is beef however we had the salmon and it was very good as well. The salads, beet and spinach, were also very good. There restrarant wasn't busy the night we were there but we couldn't get reservations earlier in our stay so make reservations early. The service was also very good and the noise level was low so it was easy to have a conversation.

We overheard the bartender say two waiters had called in sick, leaving only one waitress for the whole place. We had reservations, but were seated 25 minutes late. After being seated we ordered drinks and our meals. My salad came out 30 minutes later, but not my wife’s or our drinks. After 10 more minutes I got up and found our waitress letting her know we were missing a salad. Five minutes later she brought out a salad, it was the wrong kind. My wife was scared to send it back. A total of one hour passed from ordering the meal before it was actually delivered. Our drinks finally arrived a few minutes after our meal. The food was very good, just not a good night on service. Waitress was nice, just overwhelmed. I suggest the hostess let guests know ahead of time when similar situations occur. A complimentary drink, appetizer, or dessert would have been a good way for the restaurant to say to the patrons “we are sorry about the inconvenience and want to try and make-up for it by giving you...!”

Service was so bad that we couldn’t enjoy the food (which was good). 40 minutes before we had the drinks and went on from there.

New Year's Eve. We had a 7:00 reservation and were seated at nearly 7:00 on the dot. It was 7:25 before we had water and drink orders taken, 8:00 when our salads arrived and 9:00 when our entrees were served. Way too long, especially as we watched others seated way after us getting served their food. We had to butter our bread with spoons as there were no knives on the table, and we had to ask for water refills.

We finally spoke to the manager and she comped our drinks and wine as an apology. We eat at the Sow's Ear several times a year, and this is the first time we've experienced something like this and we will not hold it against them.

All of that said, the food was amazing. The salads were fresh and inviting, and everyone enjoyed their entrees. We had steaks, salmon, and scallops and all were delicious.

Great job, as always!! We love the Sow’s Ear. Just a mile from our house at Purgatory, this is our favorite spot.

The steaks were awesome, per usual. We're very picky about our beef and its always awesome. I love the twist on the artichoke and spinach appetizer. The hot cookies and milk were the cherry on the cake. Always a great experience!
