Out with some gals for the weekend, we were given this recommendation and it didn’t disappoint! One lady is in a wheelchair, and our reserved table was upstairs but the quickly relocated us downstairs to accommodate. The food was excellent, highly recommend the pork loin and the fried chicken.
Would come back!
I was here once, years ago. It was good then, better now. The food was excellent and not what you find everywhere. The service was attentive without being intrusive. If I lived closer, I would go more often.
A great beer selection! Must try the meatloaf and ice creams!
We were a party of 9 but got service as if we were the only ones there. Perfect atmosphere, excellent food quality, good wine and beer list, great desserts and fair price.
It was the ideal place for my wife to enjoy a Mother’s Day meal. The food was outstanding and the service was phenomenal. On a side note the rose at the end of the meal was a lovely touch. We will definitely be back.
While the food was good it was disappointing that they didn't have a special since we were there for Mother's Day. We only had the brunch & lunch menu to choose from. The lunch menu consisted of only a few appetizers, salads, sandwiches & only 4 entrees. It all fit on one sheet of paper. They don't serve dinner entrees' till 5 p.m. Otherwise, the food was good but would have like to had more to choose from. Don't go there that often & probably won't go back for a while.
The Southern Inn is always reliable for its impeccable service, warm welcome, good food, and convenience to both Washington and Lee University and Virginia Military Institute, both of which are just a few minutes' walk away.
The Southern Inn never disappoints. The best Southern Fried Chicken I have tasted as well as wonderful seasonal vegetables and delicious mashed potatoes. The salads are fresh, crisp and tasty and they make their own dressings. Other menu items are good/excellent as well, but I can't help wanting their chicken. We dine here several times a year, and although I have ordered other things I always return to the chicken. If you are in Lexington, VA, do not miss the Southern Inn. And if you are there on a weekend or any time when Washington and Lee University or VMI are having anything big YOU MUST MAKE RESERVATIONS!
As always a great experience! We love having such a great restaurant in Lexington!
We had just finished a long drive and it was nice to have a delicious and relaxing dinner. Food was very good and service was excellent. We started with the fried Brussel sprouts which were delicious and then shared the cauliflower and beet salad which was also very, very good. I had the duck and my husband had the swordfish special and we both really enjoyed our dinners. Nice selection of wine as well. We recommend.
I would rate this restaurant as very good, but evening was marred for me because of two young women at the bar who were very shrill and very loud and screaming with laughter> It made for an unhappy dining experience for me. The saving grace was our wonderful server. She was a terrific server and very gracious.
Another visit and I would ask not to be seated in the room with the bar.
The food was melt in your mouth good! So glad we found it on our vacation.
Service was wonderful- very inviting and happy to have us there.
Excellent comfort food. Server Matt was very helpful in our decisions and did not disappoint.
The food was delicious!!! Everything was good!!
I eat lunch here every week I'm in town. Can't go wrong with the fried chicken, meatloaf or liver. And always ask about the soup, the sneaky highlight of the meal
We had a party of 7 and all of us loved our dinners. Favorites were the duck breast, the fried chicken, and the pecan pie.
We go out of our way to stop at southern inn. The fried chicken is the best we ever had eaten.
Years and years of good food, good service and congenial times. A triple delight.
I'm a local and this is the ONLY place I frequent for lunch. Best food, service and ambiance in town.
In town for a concert and had a great meal. Would eat here again if back in town.
Southern Inn is usually good, but for this brunch, the eggs were over done, avocado was totally brown, the potatoes were cold, and the bagel was hard. The Bloody Mary was very good though.
I have dined at the Southern Inn about 5 times and it has always been a great experience! The service excellent and the food is outstanding - I love the variety of the menu! My daughter is a freshman at Washington & Lee and I am excited that I will be able to dine there for the next 3 years.
Excellent dining experience, food was hot and had great flavor. Server was familiar with the menu and was very helpful in our choices. Highly recommended.
Got together with old friends from VABH
Excellent as always. Every time we are in town we eat here at least once, usually 2 or 3 times! Everything is good. Don't skip the Pecan pie!
We took a chance on this restaurant at the suggestion of my Stepdaughter who is in food sales and we were glad we did. The place doesn't look like much from the outside but inside tables are clothed in white table cloths. The restaurant is clean, service was outstanding, and the food was just great. It will now be the Go-To-Place for my wife and I when we are in the area.
The service was great. The food was better than other fine dining restaurants in Lexington.
Love this place when I am in Lexington visiting! Clearly best dining in town. Had the fried chicken which is not something I normally eat and it was excellent. Lamb sliders and duck breast were delicious. The service is always welcoming and accommodating. Can’t wait to visit again.
We recently dined on a Sunday night at the Southern Inn Restaurant. My wife had the salmon (regular menu item) and I had the scallops special entrée. Both were very good - actually the scallops were some of the best I have ever tasted. We also had 2 great desserts: carrot & cheesecake and southern pecan pie - the carrot & cheesecake was terrific. All-in-all we had a great meal and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
Food was overspiced. Pork chop was so badly overdone we almost sent it back.
Service was excellent. Salad was excellent. Free champagne to celebrate was very generous.
The food and service was good. The cocktails and wines are overpriced.
Very disappointed, again. I have been going to the Southern Inn for almost 50 years. There have been some improvements (bar); but this is not the Southern Inn of old. My brother ordered their signature fried chicken because he remembered how wonderful it used to be. It is no longer worth ordering. It is simply an over-breaded, over-fried boneless chicken breast - tough and dry. I knew this based on my last visit, so I ordered the hamburger, medium. The burger came absolutely black - charred on the outside and dry and over-cooked on the inside. My grandson ordered the fish tacos; they were also a disappointment. They came full of veggies which we like; but there were two, small, sugar cube size pieces of fish, one in each taco. The noise from the bar was so loud that we couldn't hear each other talk. The only upside was the service - our server was wonderful.
Fantastic! The food was great! The cosmo was the best I’ve ever had! We WILL definitely come back!
Food was quite good. Greeting at the front door left a little something to be desired as we were a few minutes late for reservation. Then we had outstanding service throughout the dinner from Nancy — she’s both knowledgeable and fun!! Ask for her.
Delightful experience, great food and service!
Delicious food and fantastic, friendly service. Would visit again.
We have been going to Southern Inn for special family occasions for many years. Our experience in the past has been very positive. But this time it was a Tuesday in the early evening and it was SO full and noisy! The food wasn’t bad but not the best either. I ordered the pork loin and I’m used to eating pork fully cooked. I was confused when the waitress asked me how I wanted it. I told her “it’s pork.” But she kept insisting about temperature, medium, medium well. So I ended up getting a very thick peace of pork loin that was uncooked in the middle. My daughter and husband got steak knives for their steaks but I had to ask for one since my pork loin was too tough to cut with a regular table knife. My daughter asked for a medium-well steak and got a very bloody one. We took these home to cook some more. The sides were good, though. After dinner my dad asked if they sold espresso which they didn’t. He got black coffee then; but it was brought to him in a rush, no cream and sugar offered. He had to call the waitress back to get some and he got sugar packets and cream hastily served. He’s 82 and was displeased by the service he received. The noise level was such that we were unable to engage in across the table conversation with my parents who don’t hear well and are unable to speak very loud. There were other factors overall and it just wasn’t a great experience overall.
Strange menu for Easter. Very loud place. Strange objects in our iced tea...they graciously announced they would not charge us for the tea. The appetizers were good. The main course was an over toasted (burned) reuben sandwich. The carrot and ginger soup was cold. The bread was small. Not enough butter. Potato chips not salted.
I told the waitress I was finished with my soup...she looked at me and said "thats nice".
desert was good.
