Booked a dinner for 5 at 9:30pm, which I appreciate was late, and why we booked for a Monday night to ensure that we would be able to have a seating.
Lo and behold showing up for our booking and being told AT the dining room that the reservation was for 8:30, and since we had not shown up at the wrong time, they had shut down the kitchen. Since the Kitchen was shut down, there was no way they would open it again and allow us to have dinner. So ended up walking and finding food elsewhere.
Amazingly I checked my email the next day and I HAD booked for 9:30, so I called Smithy's and reported the confusion and my annoyance that a leaving do had been messed around because someone at the restaurant had logged the time incorrectly and had not apologised. The lady on the phone noted that she didn't know what had happened, but would talk to the restaurant, but didn’t want to see my booking email to confirm that I had booked for 9:30 saying she could see all the bookings. Funny enough she never searched it or acknowledged that I had booked for the 9:30pm time slot. I asked if there was a possibility of having another dinner slot or at least getting a drink if we were to go back to the bar and was told that the place was shutting down and it was unlikely that we would get anything.
So I will now be waiting to see if the place actually stops trading, and if not, I'll definitely not be recommending and rubbishing this place's reputation as much as I can!
This place had been recommended by a friend and looked nice on their website. However the reality was really disappointing. The interior of the place is in dire need of a redesign/refurb. It currently really plays on the history and original use of the building which is nice to point but I don't want to feel like I'm eating in a stable - seated in stalls and with a cobbled floor! The waiter was then pretty rude all evening and, to top it all, the food was then really disappointing. A really chewy and tasteless rib eye steak (n.b. the menu on their website isn't up to date). We won't be rushing back.
Good location close to Kings X, but not so close that you get caught up in station crowds. Sensibly level of choice on menu, which is carried through in well presented and cooked food. Wine reasonably priced plus ability to have cask/craft beers. Friendly relaxed atmosphere with good level of service from staff. Highly recommended.
Too noisy to enjoy dinner and chat in the restaurant on a Friday evening, at least in the half next to the bar, which was playing very loud music. Some of the (already limited) menu options were not available and service was not great. More expensive that I expected for what is more like a bar than a restaurant.
As a converted stables, Smithy's has a great atmosphere and character, and has food to match. The food is pretty uncomplicated, but done very well. The garlic stuffed mushrooms and the salt and pepper squid were very tasty appetisers, and the battered haddock and the seared scallops were great main courses to follow on with. dinner was accompanied by a very nice organic Verdecchio and all reasonably priced.
The quiet backstreets location meant that we were able to then sit in the bar and enjoy a couple of drinks afterwards (on a Saturday evening).
Good food just maybe a bit more veg and selection would have been nice. But what was served was tasty
My pork knuckle with mustard, apple coleslaw and bubble and squeak caused nothing put pure food envy with my friends. Food was hearty, tasty and great value for money. ALl dishes were exceptional, the ribs and the burger-everyone enjoyed what they ordered. Only negative was the service was very slow as there seemed to be a lack of servers but the food WAS worth waiting for.
We came with our 14 year old daughter as we were staying at the Travelodge just around the corner.
The menu is has something for everyone, including vegetarian, and is not a huge variety, but seems to represent good, fresh food. The waiting staff in the restaurant were excellent and we would definitely come again if we needed a proper sit down meal near Kings Cross or just a good pint of beer or a glass of wine in the bar area. Very pleasant, casual and informal. But good food, served well in the old stables. We all had the beer battered haddock and chips, and it was delicious.
We booked a table at the restaurant through Open Table about 20 minutes before the booking. Having received an emailing stating that the restaurant had confirmed the booking we were really disappointed to arrive at the restaurant for them to tell us there was no room. As there was a table in the bar area we agreed to have a drink in there until a table in the restaurant became free, but the restaurant staff did not even approach us again. In the end we ordered some food from the bar. We enjoyed this food and the atmosphere in the bar was great.
The food is ok but just very formulaic. We ordered steaks and we all agreed that the meat wasn't particularly tasty at all; I would even describe it as kind of bland. The rest of the food was, as I say, OK if just a little forgetable really. I probably would not mind any of this if I was paying normal gastro pub prices but this place is not particularly cheap, the portion sizes are small and for that reason I would not go back because it does not represent value for money. On the plus side, the venue is cosy, its close to Kings X for meeting friends and the services was great.
We booked Smithy's as a place for 6 of us all coming from different directions, so its close proximity to Kings Cross station was a plus, and tucked away down a back street. The restaurant had a good buzz about it and was lively for a Thursday early evening. The menu options were very good and the wine list too. One observation was that the wine list was very reasonably priced and what we ordered was excellent value for money. The food was well cooked, tasty and portion size was excellent! Service at times was a little slow, merely from the point of view that when we turned up, nobody came over to take a drinks order. After that, service was very good. Overall, I was impressed with Smithy's and would recommend and return!
I work very close to here, & usually have work dinners/meetings at St Pancras. As I this is (very) close I decided to give it a try. The service was a slow and part of my starter was missing they did not charge me for this, which I appreciate; this was more than I expected and a sign that they care. For the main I had the fish and chips and the batter was far too thick and greasy the overwhelming flavour was of the cooking fat. The fish within it was actually great, a really nice piece of fish let down by the batter and cooking.
Overall as it is close to work, I will go again, but I would not make a detour to go here unless my experience was a one off. We will see.
Nice venue, good food beer and wine. Atmosphere lively on arrival at 1pm on a Friday lunchtime and service was attentive and knowledgeable, however as the meal went on and the restaurant quieter, service became increasingly scarce to the point where by 2.30pm it stopped! We never were offered sweet and I had to call out for coffee and the bill. Bill for 2 courses, a decent wine and couple of apperatifs for 2 people came to £110 which was okay, maybe a little on the high side for a pub restaurant.
Smithy's pub and restaurant was really nice. I just wish we could have stayed for more courses but we had to dash off. Food very tasty and service friendly. Will return.
7 of us came here before going to a play so we were in a bit of a rush. We ordered steaks soon after we arrived, and were warned they'd take 20-25 minutes. We figured this would still be plenty of time - except we actually waited 45 minutes. This meant that unfortunately we had to wolf down some delicious food without much chance to enjoy it! It was delicious though.
The waiter was obviously quite busy but to the extent that we found it difficult to give our orders - when he came over for drinks and condiments orders he ran away before we had even finished without checking if there was anything else we wanted, which was pretty annoying.
Other than that, we really loved the look and feel of the place, so it's a shame it was ruined a bit.
I've liked Smithys for many years, so chose it for a mini-reunion recently. The waiter was excellent in keeping us topped up with very cold water; it was a sweltering day. The menu...........well, it's always depressing to order, and then to find your waiter returning with news that your choice is now 'off'. Unfortunately, this was true of three of our choices!
Still, we did get to eat, and it was fine, if a bit bland.
I do think that running out of a very popular bottled lager was bad - it is a bar, after all.
So, it won't be the venue for the next reunion..........................And I was mystified to find that the restaurant 'cancelled' my booking - after we'd been there!
I went to Smithy's recently to meet up with a friend on a Friday night. We'd booked a table in the restaurant section and had a great steak dinner with one too many drinks. The ambience and service were really good. I've been to this pub before and would definitely come again.
An eclectic setting and patrons to match. If you are looking for good food in a quirky setting then this is the place to go.
We brought an American friend for dinner and despite being in the bar - there was a function in the restaurant the whole experience was excellent and it is an historical enough building to impress!
The staff paid close attention to detail and answered every question, when they did not know the answer to one the staff member quickly sought it out. I am looking forward to returning.
If you need a place very close to Kings Cross but without the Kings Cross hustle this is your place.
Good place for meeting friends. Relaxed atmosphere. Gets after work drinking crowd so can be a bit noisy.
I hadnt been to Smithys for years and was really pleased to find it unchanged in appearance. The food was wonderful - we ate tapas -style before going to Kings Place, having several starters and sides they were all very good indeed. I would certainly return to eat. The only drawback for me was a very loud party crowd who must have ben there some time.
Great food, nice atmosphere and good service. Would recommend.
The menu claimed their signature dish was the Cote de boeuf and they didn't disappoint. Cool atmosphere as well - relatively loud as you would expect from a wine bar, but still some very pleasant surroundings, quietly tucked away near Kings Cross. Only slight let down was that the service was a little sluggish. The staff were very pleasant and friendly, but we have to wait a little longer than you would expect for the food.
Really nice food - I had the rib eye and the jus was incredible
I suppose the point of this place is that it is quite old fashioned - but with so many interesting and lively places, with great food opening up around Kings X, I can see no particular reason to go there. Quite a meaty menu, and the food was OK - tho the squid starter was a bit tough, and the lamb rather fatty, with too much sauce swamping the ratatouille - just not very inspiring!
Convenient to Kings Cross. Both the bar and the restaurant were very noisy. For a young crowd maybe that's OK. But for a business meeting, it's way too loud to conduct and serious conversation. Drink and food were fine, though.
Been here many times & decided to introduce a big group of friends after what was an important event for me earlier, rashly saying 'I've never had a bad meal there.' I have now!
Squid starters were very chewy, & waitress annoyed when I politely mentioned it. 2 friends didn't eat theirs at all but she later remarked that ONE had been taken off the bill- no apology. All squids were inner-tube like, there was no question: we weren't being fussy.
Burgers & steaks also dry & uninspired. We spent a fortune & I felt bad at wasting my friend's money. I later discovered some other friends had come to join us for a drink & been turned away from our table even though there was space.Staff didn't even have the courtesy to tell me!
Excellent atomsphere, nice for a group meal or just an intimate dining experience....been a few times and will be back, as gem of a find. Tried both bar snack and main menu both excellent
Bar ambiance was nice. Staff were helpful. But good grief, what terrible food. I had a badly cooked Tuna steak (and OK, tuna's hard to get right, but at £18 it should have been), with beetroot (the tuna was hot, the beetroot cold; confusing), and warm Quinoa (Ok, confused further) and a huge dollop of straight-from-the-fridge yogurt on the top. Awful. Truly awful. I wouldn't go back if you paid me.
Belated as I was very late, but they looked after my guest very well and allowed us to even be very tardy to depart!. Food very good and I can imagine the place humming when busy. Unusual venue and to be re-visited!
For me as a foreigner it was a challenge to find a good place for a business dinner with a party of 17 people in walking distance to St Pancras. With TopTable it was easy to identify Smithy's as a secret place in this over crowded area.
Dominique, the event manager, was very friendly and helpful! We got a great offer for a 3 course meal (very valuable), had a great place to sit in a very warm atmosphere.
For everybody a great evening!
Have been here several times and it is always very good. Long wine list, good food and nice athmosphere.
Six of us had dinner at Smithy's last Saturday night. Our table was in its own box against the wall and a great location for a long, leisurely dinner with friends, where the conversation flowed. Everyone thought the food was good (I especially enjoyed the Cote de Boeuf) and enjoyed the great selection of wine.
We wanted dinner before going to a live music event at Kings Place, so it had to be near the venue and quick. Smithy's did not fail us. The menu selection is good, if a little predictable, but the dishes themselves were very good: tasty, wholesome and attractively presented. The staff were friendly without being pushy and the place had a very good vibe to it. The bar was rammed and therefore very noisy, but that added to the atmosphere of the restaurant area as the bar is somewhat cut off. At 6.00pm there were few diners at that time and more people arrived as the evening wore on, but it never seemed crowded or over-busy. There is a good selection of wine by the glass.
Overall, an excellent eating-out experience, and I'm sure we'll be back.
I was recommended this restaurant by a good friend of mine and it delivered all the goods! The restaurant is clean, quirky and unusual, the service was exceptional and the food was delicious. I am already looking forward to my next visit. I was having a business lunch and my client and I had the cote de boeuf. Awesome meal, cooked exactly to our requirements. Thanks Smithy's!
My friend and I had the 4 meat burger and fries. Very tasty.
We booked for 15 at short notice just prior to Christmas. Smithys were helpful in providing menu options and a wine list in advance. The restaurant was extremely busy when we arrived but the service was attentive and the food was good. We were given complimentary crackers. It was a fun venue for a work party and I would recommend it to others.
After taking a wrong turn to avoid the bad weather we arrived late for our reservation but despite this the staff at Smithy's were welcoming and accommodated us straight away. We had mains only, the burger I had was full of meat, cooked as requested and tasted great with just the right amount of sides to accompany it. My friend had the corn fed chicken which was plentiful, very juicy and full of flavour; again the sides were just right. Service was efficient and not rushed. I would visit again.
Lovely evening - good food and nice atmosphere!
