About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Lively
  • Hot spot
62 years of loyal customers can't be wrong. We are grateful to all of our customers, employees, and critics (...though we may not always agree!). The only way to find out the truth is with a visit. Oft imitated, never duplicated. Thank you in advance.

Why they're an Icon

From the OpenTable editors: Open since 1949, this legendary destination is the king of San Francisco steakhouses. From luxurious carved-to-order prime rib rolled out on carts to chefs spinning salads to extra-large martinis with sidecars, every meal in the restaurant’s old-school dining room decked with ruby-hued booths is rollicking and unforgettable.

This place is worth the drive from Sacramento! The service was top tier and the food was outstanding. The wine list was extensive as well. The menu is simple and everything was prepared perfectly. Definitely will add this to my list of favorites!

House of Prime Rib has always been one of our favorite restaurants — a go-to for special occasions because of the overall experience. Unfortunately, our visit yesterday fell short of the standard we’ve come to expect, even though we mentioned to our server that we’d dined there before. •No acknowledgement of our birthday celebration — we had to mention it ourselves when the check arrived. •We didn’t get to pick our own cold forks for the salad, which is always a fun tradition for our kids. •The server only brought water; we had to ask if we could order alcoholic drinks. •Overall, the service didn’t feel as warm or attentive as it usually is. This all put a bit of a damper on our dinner. Given how expensive dining here has become, we really hope the warm, thoughtful service that makes HOPR special remains consistent — it’s part of what keeps us coming back.

Honestly I get that sometimes you want an intimate setting but it was way too dark at the tables by the restrooms. We came with a group of 5, food was good but only sad part was they took away our plate and we thought they wrapped up the bones for us…. Sadly they didn’t, maybe they forgot but ya

Extremely Disappointing Experience – Will Not Return We were genuinely looking forward to our dinner at House of Prime Rib after a great visit last time. This time, we brought friends with us, expecting the same level of service and quality. Unfortunately, what we encountered was the complete opposite—and frankly, unacceptable. First, valet parking is $21 and essentially the only parking option. Not a deal-breaker, but worth noting. What truly soured the evening were the many undisclosed “policies” we were blindsided by during the meal. All four of us ordered the same steak, yet the portions varied significantly in size. When we requested a second slice (as is customary here), it arrived paper-thin. The manager later told us there’s a policy that refills are limited to 0.2 inches thick—something never mentioned beforehand. Even worse, each guest is only allowed ONE refill, another restriction we only learned after the fact. The service was the most disappointing part. Our server was cold, never smiled, and acted as though we were a burden. She even cleared plates while we were still eating—and when we asked her to stop, she wordlessly placed the food back and walked off without apology. The lack of basic courtesy was shocking. When I raised our concerns with the manager, his response was even more baffling. He brushed it off by saying, “Maybe the waitress isn’t in a good mood today,” and offered to seat us with a different server next time—as if that excused the poor treatment we received. This restaurant has clearly lost its touch. Between the hidden rules, uneven portions, and dismissive attitude from both staff and management, this was one of the worst dining experiences we’ve had in San Francisco. We won't be returning—and we won’t be recommending it to anyone either.

Food was great, we ordered the sea bass and it was surprisingly delicious. The steak was so good even our 3 year old was enjoying her portion. Service was kind pushy, kept checking in and trying to take unfinished dishes.

Great experience and service, but my well-done Prime Rib was super dry. Order the baked potato because the pre-made potatoes were like soup. Corn was good, but wish the Prime Rib was better.
