Sauce Italian Kitchen & Market Ratings and Reviews
Our table was ready when we arrived, and our waiter Tyler was most accommodating to let us three good friends visit as long as we wanted to. He refilled our water glasses and my coffee cup without having to ask for it, and helpfully divided our bill by 3. The Fiorentini Pasta my friend and I had was delicious, and our other friend had the bowl of mussels - divine! We had a good time and would happily go back for lunch again.
I have dined at Sauce several times, and is always excellent. The food is consistently great, the service friendly and efficient, and gluten free is an option at no extra charge! Our server Sarah C remembered us from a past visit, remembering my husbands food sensitivity, and even where we sat, and that he was celebrating his birthday.
We decided to dine early at 4:30 on this particular Sunday, and it was pleasantly quiet, allowing for nice conversation, and extra attention from Sarah C.
Sauce truly is a neighborhood gem, and will continue to support this local restaurant.
It was all around okay. Nothing was awful, but nothing was that great either. The atmosphere is kind of a mishmash with a really bright glaring light all along the backsplash of the bar that makes it hard to feel relaxed depending on where you're sitting. It's kind of a nice dining room but then there are TVs above the bar so the net result is that it doesn't feel like it knows what it is. The combination of food flavours was not terrible but they were slightly odd and not better for the experimentation. The wine was also mediocre and some odd choices on the list. There could have been much better options available for similar price points. In terms of value for money, would definitely not go back.
When we were greeted by our hostess, we were immediately told that there was a time limit on our reservation (never been told that at other restaurants EVER). Kind of turned us off. The food was a mixed bag. Mussels were excellent, pizza was terrible. Overall, it was just ok.
It was very good I took my elderly aunt and she loved it. Food was tasty and reasonably priced. Service was good and the atmosphere was relaxing. It was not to noisy so I could actually visit and talk with my aunt. I would highly recommend this for lunch or for a dining experience. I will return.
I ordered the spicy sausage and penne dish and it was very tasty, and just the right amount for portion size. Love the way this restaurant is laid out, with a dining area, cafe, and deli area, and takeaway food. The bathroom is a sight for sore eyes, so well-appointed. The art work, design, generously sized stalls, and CLEANLINESS are much appreciated. Too many restaurants have low standards when it comes to bathrooms, which makes me concerned about eating their food!
The manager is extremely approachable and friendly. I've been here a few times prior to eat a quick bite in the deli area, and I've also dropped in for the cannoli. I would return to try brunch here, as well as happy hour for coffee, as it's very close to my work. Sauce is such a great addition to the Calgary food scene on near 17th avenue!
I was very disappointed in the Mushroom Risotto dish. It had a very odd flavour which I couldn't discern. Maybe too many onions, a garlic powder flavor? Definitely not the rich mushroom flavour I was expecting. Also, the iceberg wedge had way too much oil on it. My son enjoyed the beef short ribs.
Great pizza. My wife and daughter had lobster gnocchi, but it didn’t contain real lobster. In its place was something called “lobster meat” - which was really pollock. This was pointed out to the manager who immediately combed both meals - no argument. I would definitely return but avoid paying for anything with “lobster”..
We loved our lunch on Christmas Eve. The staff was so friendly & helpful & the food was delicious. So good to find a wonderful place to eat on the day before Christmas. Even though we finished our lunch near closing time we were not rushed at all. It's wonderful to have the availability of indoor parking right in the building, especially on days when the surrounding streets are packed with snow. Best wishes to all the staff at Sauce. Thank you for a wonderful dining experience.
We made reservations and didn’t get a seat for 20’mins after our time... our dishes didn’t come out at the same time because they forgot to put in my order... we appreciated that they gave my wife a free lemonade and a discount for the delay. Thank you!
overall consistently great food. Service really needs some work.. staff seems disorganized. We will still come back :)
Disappointing. I have been to this restaurant 4 or 5 times before and always enjoyed our meal. This time, my wife’s “medium rare to medium” tenderloin was extremely well done. The waiter was gracious and offered to re- cook another steak, but my wife didn’t really want to wait and decided to eat what she could. The waiter also took it off our bill, which was unexpected but appreciated.
I ordered the spaghetti bolognese with meat balls. I found the pasta rather soft, and far from al dente. Not that it is advertised as al dente, but it was also not advertised as partially pre cooked (blanched) then warmed just prior to serving (which I confirmed with our waiter that it was). I asked if that was a new practice for the restaurant and was told they have always cooked their pasta that way. I prefer an authentic Italian experience when I have pasta, and that is each pasta order to be cooked when it is ordered. I understand that many restaurants will blanch the pasta first in order to speed up the process. The end result is soft, mushy pasta.
If they have always cooked their pasta this way, then perhaps they just over cooked everything this time.
Tonight was a wonderful example of excellent customer service. My wife and I went out with our baby with a reservation of 8pm (after feeding so we could time her sleep during the meal). When we got there, it was packed to the brim (which is great, because we love to see local businesses thrive). Unfortunately, the kitchen was so far behind that we had to wait for an hour before we got out meal. The manager, and server took ownership of the issue - and made it up to us. We really appreciate that they realized that the wait was unreasonable - but handled it perfectly. This type of service breeds loyalty.
Great work Sauce!
We were here only ten days ago with another group so I was looking forward to dinner. Interestingly, I ordered the exact same meal as before and it tasted different. The beet salad was not as flavourful this time. The lobster gnocchi was good but heavily creamed and cheesy. We also ordered the flourless chocolate cake which is off the menu but available in the café. It was dry and had no raspberry coulis and the smallest dollop of whipped cream. These comments won’t chase me away from the restaurant but if I had another meal like that I would question coming again.
As usual, a wonderful meal with great service. One issue, however, is that the restaurant is apparently unable to split bills, yet will accept separate payments. That should work well, but some in our group forgot they had coffee, and made a math error regarding drinks, resulting in a shortage that of course had to be sorted by the very patient server and her supervisor. Sauce was very busy with pre-Christmas parties and needed our table. Certainly not the restaurant’s fault! But why can they not provide separate bills as others have been able to do willingly? I love this place, though, and it looks gorgeous for the the Christmas season.
Excellent meal and just amazingly delicious! Beet salad was incredible. It was quite noisy in the restaurant but it was a Friday night so what can one expect? Great attentive service and reasonable prices. More gluten free desserts would be great- gelato is getting old!
Absolutely outstanding. It was Beer and Pizza night however they offered wine instead of beer. We ordered 2 different pizzas ans they were both delicious!!! Went again for lunch on Thursday and had paste. Again outstanding. We will be back again. Great restaurant however quite noisy. Service was very friendly however not quick. A lovely leisurely meal.
I was excited to bring some friends to a restaurant they’d never been to but was incredibly disappointed with the service this time. I’d never experienced such poor service here and they forgot our appetizer (it was just popcorn) and then we asked twice about our food as other tables who were seated after us had even gotten their food. They blamed it on our appetizer (again that was only popcorn and that they had forgotten to bring out in the first place) and then we waited 20 more minutes for our food.
As usual an excellent choice for outstanding food and value . A bit noisy when it's full, that's almost always, but not so noisy it's impossible! Great food and a menu that always has something new to try. Sauce is consistently busy do the staff stay and that makes for good reliable service.
