Sarento's on the Beach Ratings and Reviews
This was our 4th visit. The other 3 times were exceptional. This time the hostess was rude. My husband and our friend ordered the gnocchi and they came back to let us know they didn’t have gnocchi for a 6:30 reservation. Our other friend ordered the chicken and it was delivered 10 minutes after the other 3 entrees. The noodles weren’t cooked and it tasted very bland.
This place used to be so very good. Not anymore. Food was eehhhh. I had a green salad. It was floating in dressing. There were supposed to be shaved season veggetables...they were carrots! 😂
My hubby had the caprese. Worst one ever. Then he got the grilled seafood on a bed of risotto. The risotto was overly sweet. Not a good flavor. I had fresh fish. Which was the best thing I ate. Fish on a bed of pasta w tomato sauce. The fish and tomato sauce didn’t mix well. Way overpriced for the quality of food. Oh yeah. Our plates sat on our table well after we were finished with each coarse. And water glasses never filled. Even when completely empty. And the restaurant wasn’t even busy. I would say 1/3 of the tables were occupied.
We made reservations for a special Valentine’s Day dinner weeks in advance. It was a set menu, so should have been no surprise to the restaurant. Our reservations were for 8:00. Our experience began badly when the hostess was altogether mediocre about our arriving. We waited 20 minutes to be seated, and this was with the restaurant only half full. We heard people complaining from around the room and asking for waiters, etc. we never did get a waiter, but a very drunk ‘manager’, who slurred so badly we couldn’t understand what he was saying. He took our orders for food, but never for drinks. The junior staff, however, were wonderful, and trying to accommodate where the wait staff were lacking. Another ‘manager’ took our drinks order. We had to ask for bread, even though there were bread plates on the table, were told it was coming out of the oven, but when it finally arrived, it was apparent that it hadn’t been in an oven for hours. I ordered shrimp cocktail, and although cooked perfectly, it was room temperature and sitting in water where the ice had melted. Same for our main courses. We both ordered filet, which were cooked beautifully, but came out cold. All the problems of the evening were with lack of service, not food. We heard a manager apologizing to a couple next to us, explaining that they had served 300 people that evening. Well, that is no excuse. They took the reservations for the special evening, but didn’t follow through. We felt sorry for the junior staff and the chef. Not returning here. Maybe because they are on the beach, they feel like they don’t have to measure up to a normal restaurants standards.
Went for Valentine’s Day. Food was average, not great. Appetizer was very salty; main course had great fish, but pasta was lackluster and bland; dessert was just average. Service had its ups and downs, but the biggest frustration was the lack of continuity. We were visited by 5 waiters at various times throughout the meal, all with varying degrees of responsiveness. Took a few attempts to order a glass of wine, which finally arrived after we were done with our entrees. The biggest bummer was the prix fixe menu, which only included standard menu items but at a significant markup. The view was outstanding, even despite a surprise thunderstorm, so that highly-acclaimed feature checked out. All in all, though, not the best first impression, and not one that has us interested in a return visit.
New menu...meh! Not a fan and they took one of the only items I could eat off the menu. Huevos Rancheros and gluten free granola were the only things I could eat being allergic to shellfish and wheat. Replacement for huevos was something I'd never heard of and they had Pita bread for the item that one would use to pick up leftover sauce, which I could not use to said gluten allergy.
On the whole, I'd give the restaurant an ok review. Food not as great as It had been (think crispy, well-done hashbrowns), but the staff and beach view was as beautiful as it has always been.
Overall, we had a decent experience here. We were seated promptly thanks to our reservation, and then waited...and waited. Service throughout the meal was very poor and lacking. The "team approach" to service here leaves a lot to be desired and there are often large gaps in the service. Our food was good once it came, but we were starving by the time it arrived. The location right on the ocean is of course great. Overall, a pretty off night for this restaurant that left me pretty disappointed.
We’ve been here many times and have always loved it. This time the service was so inattentive, it overshadowed the Sarentos we know. We brought friends for their first time and I think the poor service didn’t allow them to really enjoy the beautiful setting and great food, such a shame.
We told them it was my wife’s birthday at the reservation. The hostess acknowledged her birthday. No servers did, nor was a complimentary item offered.
The steak had to be returned as it was not prepared as ordered. My wife was almost done with her dinner when the steak was returned cooked to order.
Ordered a filet and couldn’t cut through it with a larg steak knife (definitely not a filet). Inedible and shared that with the waiter who didn’t care. When a waiter removes your plate and it’s full/uneaten that should be a red flag. I paid $45 for a meal that was barely touched. Just because it’s on the beach doesn’t mean you should you be ripped off. Service gets a 3 star since the hostess was lovely.
So sad to report that our disappointment of the last couple of years with the food (and prices) seems the norm now for Sarentos. The view is a knock out and we have always had very good and friendly service . However the food for our last visit (and for the last few years) has been largely mediocre and it is way too expensive, even for Maui, Given that. We used to really enjoy eating here and we hope it will one day be true again.
We have been to Sarentos for years. But last year the service was spotty. This year it was really bad. If you don’t order immediately they ignore you. We asked for ketchup 3 times. Glad we only went for breakfast. This is a beautiful place to have a restaurant but you can’t have that the only asset. It is off our list but hope it improves!!
You can’t beat the location of this restaurant, especially if you reserve way ahead and ask for a table on the patio. Go just before sunset. You are right on the edge of the beach about 75 feet to the ocean’s edge. The service was outstanding to begin with but then different people started tending to us and asking questions we’d already gone through. It’s almost like too many people are waiting on you. All of the food was delicious and they even cater to vegetarians-just ask. It’s very pricey, but worth it if you have multiple nights to go out.
