One of the few nice restaurants open during COVID. Table spacing could have been better. No outside dining option as other restaurants have implemented.

We have always been fans of Roy’s, but tonight was a bit less satisfying. We loved the edamame, baby ribs and chocolate soufflé (a favorite for years), but the mahi mahi encrusted with macadamia nuts was so bland that I had trouble finishing it. The chef needs to go back to revise that recipe—which I told a server. He apologized, and I expected that the manager might speak with us or ask us about the dinner. He AND the server basically ignored us from that point until we left the restaurant. A number one feeling you have to get in a restaurant is that you will be welcomed there. Things happen—food doesn’t always please, but a general feeling of “we’re glad you came tonight” should still be there. The waitress was very friendly, however. In retrospect, I should have repeated my comments to her. Roy’s is a first rate restaurant and should do better.

My wife and I have been eating at Roy's Waikoloa since it first opened. This is Roy's second attempt to re-open during the pandemic. The first re-opening occurred when there were almost no tourists because of the mandatory 14-day quarantine. This re-opening was unsuccessful for lack of enough customers. Thankfully, the tourists are now coming back since they can avoid the quarantine by pretesting before their departure. I believe the Roy's management was totally unprepared for the number of customers the night we had dinner. Consequently, the service was poor because of insufficient staff. Also, there is a truncated menu. But the food we ate was excellent as usual. Hopefully, the Roy's management will call back more of their staff which are needed to properly accommodate their customers.

First night open after Covid. Would be a five star otherwise. A bit slow understandably. Friendly service. Would come back for sure.

The restaurant was dramatically understaffed. Perhaps some staff members called in sick but the service was so slow we were about to order pizzas from another restaurant and leave. The fish special was tasty but the ahi ordered by two people in our group, was horrible. The meat was almost gray served on some room temp potatoes. It was a bust. Took forever to eat bad food that was expensive. To add insult to injury, the ambiance was as inviting as a conference room at an old hotel. No charm. We will never return.

Roy's is always great. This was their 1st open night in 8 months and they had some challenges with availability of service people. My Mahi was superb and my wife's butter fish was outstanding.

My wife and I were so excited to be able to eat at Roy’s on the opening night after the COVID-19 pandemic closure. The spareribs, Misoyaki butterfish and chocolate soufflé were of almost legendary status. It was a terrific welcome back evening.

As residents here we frequent Roy’s fairly often (during non-COVID times). Tonight was quite disappointing- food was lukewarm and service was very poor.

They were suffering from Covid-19 adjustments and did not have the staffing they typically run with so there was some lapses in service. For example we did not receive our complimentary pre-meal edamame and dishes sat on table too long after finishing our meals. However, the food was outstanding as always and the server friendly. With tables removed for social distancing it was much quieter than a typical night. This also added to improved views of the lake. I definitely recommend when they re-open.

I am so pleased that Roy's Waikoloa is open again! Roy's definitely has some of the most creative and tasty food on the island. For those concerned about safety during the pandemic: the tables are spaced far apart, all of the staff wear masks and gloves, the tables are thoroughly cleaned and the menus are disposable paper.

The place is dated and no real ambiance whatsoever, just boring and lifeless. The food was pretty much the same and cost more than double what is worth, even for Hawaii. I have been to Kauai several times, Maui over a dozen times and the Big Island several times. Not once have I felt robbed after a meal...until now. Nothing about Roy’s lived up to my memories of eating at one of their locations. Never again.

It has been at least 5 years since we dined at Roy's although we are on the Big Island for 6 weeks/year. The first thing that stuck us were the prices. We usually go out to upper tier dining 1-2 times/week. Roy's prices seem 15% to 20% above comparable dining experiences. The second thing was the dining experience from a food perspective. The food was well prepared. Both fish selections were tasty and reasonable portions. The farmer's salad was well prepared and a good portion. The overall meal was just not satiating. There is no attempt to add a starch or vegetable. Yes, there is a vegetable garnish but the mahi mahi dinner was essentially a fish entrée. It was tasty but I was hungry at the end of the meal. Dinner for 2 with only 1 glass of wine was $160 including tip. I believe there are more enjoyable experiences available on the Big Island.

Loved Roy’s Chardonnay , but even more our last night on the Big Island. This restaurant has several options for light dining. We chose the appetizers for two and several other choices for the four of us to share. Never felt rushed, and we ended our night with the famous chocolate volcano desert.

When making the reservation we noted it was for a birthday but nothing was mentioned at dinner. Why ask if they don’t plan to follow through? Food and waiter were just ok. Waiter was quick with kids food but rarely checked in with us and we had to wait at least 20 minutes for our desert. Why order it up front if we have to wait for it? We’ve been to many Roy’s location and this was a disappointment.

Our server and the busboy saved the night with their great service and friendly attitude.

Our group has been to many Roy’s locations in Hawaii and California. Never have we had such an unsatisfying meal at Roy’s. The Misoyaki Butterfish was over sauced and the black rice was just gross. The overall dark appearance of the dish made it very unappealing.

The sushi rolls we’re swimming is multiple sauces and didn’t have a nice, clean seafood flavor that sushi should have. The “sushi rice” was way over cooked and dense. Even after trying to make good, the replacement sushi was not done well either.

Finally, the fruit crisp dessert was not crisp and undercooked. The topping was completely raw and tasted like raw dough.

Our server - without prompting- adjusted our bill for the multiple mistakes. Even after all that, a manager never came to address the errors of the evening.

We typically enjoy dining at Roy’s but would recommend our friends dining at this particular location.
