COMAL is a gathering place located in Berkeley’s bustling Arts District, just north of the Downtown Berkeley BART Station. The restaurant is housed in a single-story building (circa 1927) and features a lush, secluded rear patio with a full bar, covered dining area, and al fresco beer garden with fire pit.

Executive Chef Matt Gandin creates earthy, modern interpretations of dishes from throughout Mexico, with emphasis on Oaxaca and neighboring coastal regions. We offer an “all-Mexican” list of craft cocktails, house-made sangritas paired with our curated collection of agave spirits, and a diverse selection of local beer and wine on tap.

Also please note that Comal charges a 20% service charge in lieu of tips.

    Service was spectacular. Really friendly and helpful. Food was delicious also. We were celebrating wedding anniversary, which we were asked to state while making the reservation. I was expecting a nice touch of "happy anniversary' or perhaps a small complimentary dessert. But there was not mention. I decided not to make a point of it, as we had a very nice dinner and the service was delightful. Suggestion to Comal - do not include a query while making online reservation about any special occasion when it will not be used for anything. Small nit.

    Exceptional food, and our server was helpful in recommending food perfect for our pallets. She was so helpful in answering a million questions on how food was prepared and some of the ingredients that were used. We tried several different dishes and were grateful to have leftovers for lunch the next day. It was a reminder of just how good their food is. Everything was flavorful and yummy. Do not miss their corn!

    Excellent. We had the pork shoulder for 2-3 people, which could easily feed 4-5 people. The food was delicious and the service was impeccable.

    The new kale enchilada with green sauce is really delicious, but it's hard to beat Matt's spareribs! Chef was willing to allow us to swap the green beans for the corn side dish, that comes wih the spareribs, and that was another winner. DON'T MISS the rice pudding!
