Contemporary American
We are an eclectic Los Angeles restaurant, located in Koreatown, heralded for its creativity and genre-defying cuisine. Their first restaurant together, owners Lien Ta and Chef Jonathan Whitener opened Here's Looking At You in 2016. Named a "Restaurant of the Year" by Food & Wine Magazine and one of Eater National's "38 Most Essential Restaurants," HLAY was also the subject of author Patric Kuh's "Becoming a Restaurateur." After four magical years as a small independent restaurant, COVID-19 would force its forever closure. But 17 months later, fate would have it that the community would come together to help resurrect this very special restaurant. Thanks to you, Here's Looking At You is back.

The food was delicious! We loved every dish that we got. I would recommend just for the food! The tables are very close together so it's hard not to overhear people sitting next you. The drinks are also very small for $17 each, that was the one thing that didn't feel worth the price. Would go back for the food but not for drinks.

There is no better restaurant in Los Angeles, no better restaurant in California, no better restaurant in the world. Everything HLAY does is creative, inspired, and delicious. I’m counting the minutes until my next trip.

The drinks at the bar were excellent, however the food was extremely poor. My girlfriend and I left very disappointed on a birthday dinner we were otherwise excited for and will be going to somewhere else to celebrate because the meal was not worthy of a celebration. When I pay 25$ plus for dishes the size of tapas, I expect thoughtful plates with well sourced ingredients. The kitchen failed on both fronts. For instance, the tomato salad. The hearts of palm tasted like they were from Trader Joe’s and the tomatoes were crunchy and watery. Any farmers market heirloom would taste better for 5$ what we paid 25$ for. If I had gone to the farmers market, purchased a tomato and dressed it in salt and evoo, my dish would’ve been much preferred. I recently had a tomato salad with just heirlooms and fish sauce for 1/2 the price that was easily 2x the dish. Yes, the garnishes looked nice on camera & social media but they were nothing more than a superfluous textural element. Menu: all over the place, lacking identity and hard to eat. The best thing we had was the bone marrow, but at 30$, it was good for maybe a bite or two and the bread was the best part of the dish. The frogs legs had good flavor but the same sauce on a meatier chicken wing for less $ would’ve been preferred as frog meat lacks differentiators other than its small size and extra bones. We joked with the couple next to us this would be the worst possible food to eat on a date and they agreed. I said my part on the salad and the other dish we had were the scallops, which were small and in a broth that seemed like it was halfway to a pho but forgot all the other ingredients. I write this because I was disappointed on a special occasion but also because the drinks were phenomenal and there is such high potential as evidenced by your reviews and crowd. If the kitchen could develop an identity and focus on dishes to compliment the cocktails, I would go back & recommend it to my friends.

75% of the menu included chicken liver, escargot, frog’s legs, and just about every other repulsive animal organ/appendage you can think of. If this fare is for you, then great. But for me and most others, it felt as though they were trying to offend their guests as much as possible by serving inaccessible/disgusting food. We left without ordering dinner. The drinks were outstanding, though.

This restaurant is not cheap, so be prepared to spend some money. We had the uni panna cotta and gulf bay scallops to start. The uni panna cotta was different & interesting - I've never had a dish like this before. The uni flavor was pretty mild, so for anyone concerned it would taste fishy, don't worry. It was like a custard with an umami flavor & some crunch. The scallops tasted fresh & citrusy - kind of like a slightly sweet & milder ceviche. To fill us up, we also got (1) the chicken liver pate -- nice texture, slightly too salty on its own but the apricot jam pairs nicely with it; (2) the steak tartare -- had a spicy kick to it, but otherwise, nothing really special in terms of flavor; and (3) the bone marrow -- which came with an XO sauce that became the standout flavor, kind of overpowering the flavor of the marrow itself. I personally liked the XO sauce, so I didn't mind it, but I've had better bone marrow at other places. Our favorite dishes were the chicken hearts & the escargot -- standout dishes in my opinion. The hearts were a decent size, nicely seasoned & very tender -- came 5 hearts per skewer, 2 skewers per order. The escargot also came in 2 skewers -- 3 lardons but only 2 escargot per skewer. It was the combination of the lardons with the lemon, mint & garlic that made you want to eat more of it. For dessert, we tried the roasted chestnut mochi. I personally really enjoyed it because it evoked memories of childhood & it tasted very similar to a Filipino dessert (sapin-sapin). Take note that this is a warm dessert. And I don't drink, so I had the chef's mocktail, which was tropical & refreshing. The ambience was too loud for my liking. It's a pretty small restaurant with mostly 2-tops, so not really great for big groups, and a little too loud for romantic dates.

Love small plates for sharing but also because there is room for dessert which was out of this world delicious. Don’t skip the roasted chestnut mochi. A bit casual and noisy but the food was interesting and prepared so no ingredient over shadowed another. Great eating experience.

Very adventurous dishes, some that I wasn’t ready to try. But the ones we did - tuna tartare, broccoli, stracciatella - were very good with interesting ingredients and flavorful. What stood out the most was the amazing dessert of frozen pear soda espuma, it was what I would describe as eating a cloud. Service was nice and attentive.

Here’s Looking At You (HLAY if you’re in the know) may be our favorite restaurant in LA. For such a modest space everything is superb, from the food (modern American small plates with a pan-Asian influence) to the drink program (especially the cocktails) to, most of all, the service. Great date spot, and make sure to try the chicken liver pâté and the hazelnut mochi.

Finally made it to HLAY, successfully tempted when I saw three of my favorite dishes on their menu - steak tartare, chicken liver on toast, and bone marrow. The steak tartare (red chili, scallions, tamari, yolk, turnip) and the chicken liver (apricot jam, black pepper, b&g bread) were fantastic, but the sauce that was served alongside the bone marrow (poor man’s xo, perilla, gem, lime, b&g bread) missed the mark for me completely. It tasted burned, and then burned again. I’m glad I tried it before slathering it on top of the bone marrow because it would have totally overpowered the dish and made it inedible. Overall service was decent, tables are very close together, and it’s pretty loud. I’d likely want to sit at the bar next time, because the steak tartare and the chicken liver warrant a repeat visit, and I’ll slide some other dish(es) into the rotation to replace the bone marrow. Valet parking was easy and $8.

We came to celebrate our son’s birthday and it was a lovely celebration! We hadn’t been to the restaurant since 2018 and were very excited to come back! The food and drinks were very yummy but not as good as I had remembered from years ago. Don’t get me wrong, it was delicious but just not as good as before. The liver pâté was my personal favorite with their grilled bread, yum! I didn’t really love the bone marrow (usually one of my favorites) and really didn’t like their XO sauce. The duck was delicious and very expensive. Loved the passion fruit sauce with scallops but thought the dish a little skimpy. We brought our own dessert which they refrigerated and served us for $3.50 pp. The bill with tip and tax came to $450 for 4 people, yikes! It was enjoyable but I don’t think we would go back. I do wish them all the best in their success!

Been looking forward to this place since before pandemic! We had a lot of dishes, couple we all felt was good technique but missing something. Cucumber burrata and the crispy duck. Wished there was a side that came with the duck, it was so crispy and good but needed a veg or something besides the sauces. Mochi dessert was table favorite ! Thank you for great service and really happy you made it through covid shutdown!

Food was really not very good and overpriced - taste notes were just off for many of the dishes (too tart, too bitter, etc.) There were no great carbs; bread as an accompaniment was basic and not a creative fusion. The burrata and steak tartar were fine but it's hard to mess those up. The chestnut mochi was the highlight but hardly redeemed the meal.
