About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Hot spot
  • Great for creative cocktails
Le Coq is James Beard Best Chef finalist Tara Monsod’s French Asian steakhouse. Inspired by the modern Parisian culinary landscape, Chef Tara reimagines classic French dishes through an Asian American lens—layering brightness, umami, and spice into every plate. The menu is grounded in fresh ingredients from local waters and farmers markets, with unexpected riffs that celebrate Tara’s upbringing. Set inside a historic building in downtown La Jolla, Le Coq pairs raw brick and steel trusses with the plush glamour of a 1970s supper club.

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Tara Monsod

From the OpenTable editors: The latest hotspot from powerhouse restaurant group Puffer Malarkey Collective, Le Coq is where you go for modern takes on French classics with SoCal and Asian influences. James Beard Award-nominated chef Tara Monsod dazzles with standout dishes like a duck l’orange with tamarind puree, kumquat, and chicory. Original exposed brick walls in the historic 1930s building, red velvet booths, and lush plants add to the swanky Parisian vibe.

For one night only, Le Coq welcomes Chef Rene Andrade of Bacanora—James Beard Award winner for Best Chef: Southwest 2024—for a special Friends in Town dinner in partnership with OpenTable x Visa. Chef Rene has earned national acclaim for his wood-fired cooking and unapologetically bold flavors that reflect the Sonoran heritage of his hometown in northern Mexico. Bacanora, named one of The New York Times’ Best Restaurants in America, is a cult favorite in Phoenix—and for good reason. On September 21, Chefs René Andrade and Tara Monsod will come together to create a 5-course menu that explores the borderless spirit of the Southwest. Expect local ingredients, stories worth savoring, and a celebration of culture and fire. Due to the nature of this collaborative menu, modifications and substitutions will not be available. Friends in Town, a dining series by OpenTable x Visa, allows guests to experience collaborations between two chefs from different cities creating unique, limited-time menus. Very spacious restaurant. Wine and cocktail options were lovely. Small menu, but everything we tried was delicious I definitely recommend the onion tart! The entrees we ordered leaned a bit too salty but nothing a lemon wedge couldn’t solve. Service was a bit slow even though they had lots of front of house staff was plentiful. Will be returning to try the happy hour!

Standout La Jolla restaurant our entire party loved. Had a vegetarian who was happy along with carnivores. Service absolutely top notch. Cannot say how wonderful it is to have professional polished service in San Diego. Just the complete real deal. Thank you.

This is now my 4th time to this restaurant. Last night was not good, the fillet and pork tomahawk were totally over cooked. Also everything felt very rushed. If you are choosing to pay the prices, the food better be top notch as well as the experience.

Wow, wow, WOW! What an incredible experience! I already want to go back! We arrived for our dinner reservation thirty minutes early, but they still sat us right away. The interior was GORGEOUS and set the stage for a wonderful evening. I wish I could remember our waiter’s name, but he was absolutely fantastic - very attentive and knowledgeable. Our drinks were amazing (get the Calvados 75, you won’t regret it), and the food was SUBLIME. I’m not exaggerating. The baguette was perfectly crunchy on the outside, and the Pamplie butter was clearly superior to American butter. The celery salad was bright and crisp, and the onion tart…I’m going to dream about that tart (I even wanted to lick all the sauce off the plate, but didn’t because I wanted to show some level of restraint). The spinach gnocchi was wonderful and not heavy, and the steak frites were so well-prepared - crispy fries that were perfectly salted, and the au poivre sauce was flawless. For dessert, we split the Paris-Brest, a perfect way to end the meal. But, because it was our first time visiting San Diego, we were gifted an extra dessert - a chocolate mousse - and it was such a wonderful and thoughtful offering. Thank you so much to everyone at Le Coq; when we visit San Diego again, we will absolutely come back here!

Beautiful restaurant food excellent except the chicken. Overcooked chicken breast too tough to chew. Never saw management on the floor. I will go back

We went to celebrate Father’s Day. They sat us at a nice booth as requested. The service was good and server attentive. My husband had the fried oyster which looked big but mostly batter. I had the tuna tartar which I was told tuna would be cubed like poke but it was not. Tuna was mushy not firm. Both appetizers were overpriced. My husband had the steak frites which he said was good. I had the hamburger which was over salted. I had to request they remake it. It was better but still salty. If I had high blood pressure I think I may be sick from the amount of salt. Salt does not give flavor to a dish. Terrible and overall disappointing. We went since we enjoyed animae restaurant.
