Seafood
The Hake is a waterfront restaurant with a seasonal menu. The menu reflects sustainable and fresh ingredients of the coast of California, while drawing inspiration from the flavor of Mexico and the Mediterranean.

Our most popular dishes are being brought back starting with our famous Shaved Beef Tacos, fresh Tuna Tostadas and marinated Tuna Carnitas. Chef Omar Gomez, also brings new dishes to complement our fresh take on Ceviche Peruvian and Grilled Spanish Octopus. Although The Hake is Seafood oriented, we also offer a Certified Angus Beef 12 oz. New York Steak, served with herbal pistachio chimichurri and confit potato plus an assortment of house made fresh desserts.

We were a group of four; two liked their meal (salmon), two were disappointed (sea bass). Service was mediocre and then when the bill came we realized they were charging us for five (vs four) meals. When we pointed out the extra charge the waitress did not seem surprised, nor did she apologize. Great view, otherwise not impressed.

From the moment that I walked in the door, I was treated very well. All the staff were attentive and friendly. My table was close enough to the windows to have a great ocean view. The food was delicious. My crab croquettes were fabulous. I also had the sea bass and it was cooked perfectly. I will definitely go back on my next trip to La Jolla.

Dined here for Easter today and wow what a disappointment your Brunch menu was. What a departure from your dinner menu, nothing relative to the cuisine and or culinary statement. If you don’t take breakfast seriously then don’t bother opening

Restaurant was dead on a Friday night. We sat next to the window and near two large parties with crying children. Tuna and salmon were great. Sea bass was salty. Won’t be going back to this restaurant.

We had a very good experience.. We had the Beet salad to start, the grilled octopus and the fish entree. All meals, salads were excellent. Our server Joe was attentive but not obtrusive , very well informed of the dishes and very friendly. We had the opportunity to also meet the manager who was very pleasant and offered a complimentary dessert for our anniversary .Overall, we enjoyed our evening very much. We had been very hesitant to try the Hake due to reviews but we enjoyed our meal. BTW, there is a new hostess who was as cute as could be.Their seemed to be some negative posts due to a hostess there but she is gone:-).

The Hake was our favorite La Jolla place for a while. We chose to go there for a family-get-together/birthday celebration, and it was a big clunker. Our seemed to be willing to help, but burst into our conversation several times when he arrived at the table; finally, I had to ask him to please wait and see if anyone at the table was speaking before he butted in again. I also ordered a red and white wine, explaining that way, my guests could have their choice of wine. He brought the white wine first which, for some reason, he was very insistent would be a very choice for our table, even though we hadn't ordered any food yet. Then, when I told the wine was good, he proceeded to pour everyone white wine. "Please ask if they prefer red or white," I had to instruct him. Several times throughout the evening we ran out of water, which was somewhat hard to believe, as they were not that busy. My wife asked me to find another place next time. Great way to end the evening.

Overpriced food and wayyyy overpriced wine list. Is there a reason for a couple to have to spend over 60 for a bottle of wine Nooooo. The prices on the web site do not match the real menu but that seems to be the new trick a lot of restaurant are doing now a days.

The Hake was recommended to me by a shop owner of Ascot. He needs a pat on the back! We loved the Hake. One of the best meals on our short jaunt! La Jolla is gorgeous and I wish we could have been there eating at the table next to the ocean during the day. Our server was fabulous and lead us through our choices with each selection. So helpful! I wanted to go back again the next night. It is a STAR in my book.

I made a reservation a month prior to ensure the five of us girls would get a table with a view & when those tables were all filled upon our arrival, the server said those were “first come first serve & a reservation didn’t matter because people never show up”. We were on time by the way. Had to ask for bread.... just goes down hill from there as you can imagine. Food was good but with that kind of attitude, skip this place..... probably why those tables by the window were the only ones filled. I feel sorry for their chef.

Made reservations for 7:30pm on 2/17/18. We got there at 7:25pm and the host and hostess both told me it was a couple minutes wait. I asked the hostess if we could be sat by a window and she told me she'd check. Then she comes back and says that a window seat is about a 15 minute wait. I asked her "so if I choose to not get a window seat we can be sat right now at another table?" She says "yes" so I told her that's fine, we'd take a table right now. So she tells me she'll get a table ready and come back for us. 30 mins pass, other people are getting upset because they're "so backed up" and people are literally saying "fxck this" and going to Donovan's next door. Meanwhile I'm still waiting and finally catch the hostess again and ask her to what happened to being sat right away for passing up a window seat? She tells me she isn't allowed to seat people right now (tf?). By the time we are finally sat, it's 8:30pm (we would've left but everywhere nearby also had a long wait) and the dining room barely has anyone in it! There were like 15 empty tables! I looked at the host and mentioned all the empty tables and he actually told me "a lot of people just left" which was BS because I sat at the front door for an hour and only 10 people left the entire time. Then after we finally had dinner the bill came and they didn't even try to mitigate the problem by taking anything off the bill. Food was good and our waiter was alright... but the host and hostess bullshxtting us drops my rating all the way down. Thanks for starving us even though we had reservations. We don't plan on ever coming back.

The food was decent, two of the dishes were good but the day's special and ravioli not good. The service was slow (they may have been understaffed that night), it took almost an hour to get our appetizers and the server was not really engaged with the table. We had to ask twice for our drinks and at the end of the meal, we requested the dessert menu that never came. So we opted to get ice cream at a different place. Overall, not worth $300 for 4 people.

I did not get sat until 35 minutes after the reservation time, only after I asked about the status of the table. Once seated, it took another 10 minutes to see a server. We told him that we were now in a rush. One of the hosts was gracious about the situation and comp'ed the drinks we had while we were waiting. The food was very slow coming out and we eventually had to cancel our after-dinner plans. After the food arrived, no one came to check on us or see how the food was. This is important because the sea bass was over-cooked and needed salt. Once we told our server this, he said that it would take about 15-20 minutes to get a new entree because the kitchen was backed up. We told him that we were still in a rush and picked a dish that was likely to not take as long. I finshed my entree (short ribs) as it was getting cold. The new dish (squid ink pasta) came out, but still no manager visit. When the bill came, the new (replacement entree) was on the bill, along with the small plate we had before the entree issues started. We asked to see a manager because we had still yet to see anyone other than our server and the waiter assistants who brought the water and bread. It was very clear that this was not an isolated incident, as the table next to us resorted to raising their hands (like in a classroom) in order to get anyone's attention. Overall, for the poor quality of service and lack of attentiveness when the food was served, I would strongly recommend anyone to go anywhere else. This area of La Jolla has a lot of options, and The Hake should be at the bottom of your list.

Food was excellent. Had tuna carnitas (highly recommend), squid ink seafood pasta, the ribeye, and bartender's choice drinks. Service was good without being "hover-y" and the ambience was low lit and romantic. Little expensive but I think well worth it. Expect to spend around 120-160$ with drinks.

Nice place. I hadn't been there since the remodel. It now has a very nice dining area in addition to the bar and bar seating area. Beautiful views if by the windows - reserve that. Good menu. Had the salmon with blue crab on top - but crab turned out to be $8 extra. My date couldn't decide between two wines, so they brought tasters of each for her. That was a nice touch. It was a Saturday evening around 7:30, and the place was not busy at all. I thought that was odd, but maybe it's just because people don't know about it. Check it out. Worth the visit.

The food is outstanding, no doubt about it. The service, no so. For the type of restaurant, I expected better. Our main course took a long time to arrive, even though ours was only one of 2-3 total tables in the place. The waitress kept telling us "it's coming." We ordered dessert, which was also great. We ordered coffee but no cream or milk was served. It took a while for any waiter to come near our table to get this and it took telling two different wait staff to get the milk. Could do better with service. I was very surprised by this.

We were there to celebrate a 60th birthday with friends from out of town. With so many restaurants to choose from in La Jolla, and this being a special occasion, we wanted just the right place: food, atmosphere, service, view... The Hake didn't disappoint - it was amazing. Our friends raved about it that evening and woke up raving about it again the next morning. It was a great success. I would recommend this place for a special occasion, romantic date night or just craft cocktails and appetizers.

We will never return again. Very sad and disappointing. I defended the waiter to the until table while everything became a mess. Then my husband walked into our waiter outside smoking a cigarette. The bused tables in an empty restaurant before refilling our waters, drinks and forgot everything. It took us 2.5 hours to get entrees. We have a baby...so by the end we had to refuse a birthday dessert as it took three hours to get to that point. Manager did a terrible job handling the issues- yes he competed a portion of the meal but in the end, I will never return and it’s very sad because this was my favorite restaurant.

The food was nicely presented and tasty. However, it left me with a stomach ache which started soon after we left and persisted for a couple of days. Also, service was quite slow despite a non-busy Saturday night - we received our appetizers before our drinks. And they served a double expresso instead of the regular one I had ordered.

Very disappointed - had requested view table for special occasion and though one such table sat empty for half hour right by our table - it was not offered to us. Service was horrible by waitress. Not sure if she was busy but she didn't explain that to us. Rather, we had to request pepper and other things from busboys and host. Small amount of beers on tap and of those only a few available. Menu items as stated not available when we ordered. Caesar salad seemed to have come from a package just like the ones sold at grocery store. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone and will not return.
