République, located in mid-city, is owned by Chef Walter Manzke and Chef Margarita Manzke. Centered in the heart of Los Angeles, the classic building in which it resides was originally erected in 1929 by Charlie Chaplin, and later transformed into the iconic La Brea Bakery and Campanile Restaurant. République builds on this storied past, offering a gastronomic environment imbued with history and grandeur. The space features a casual bar and bistro in the front with a more formal dining area located in the rear, serving a French-inspired menu created daily by our Chefs.

The style of restaurant is wonderful and the ambience was amazing. We loved the format of 2-3 dishes per person to share. It also doesn’t hurt when those dishes are absolutely divine! Can’t wait to come back here for brunch since our dinner was so good!

Usual great food. But service was the slowest we’ve ever had. In fairness, our server, who was very pleasant, was new. There was clearly lots of miscommunication or lack of communication between the server and the bus staff with slow clearing of dishes and missing parts of courses. It’s not uncommon for restaurant service to slow down after the entrees but this delay was excessive. Just prior to letting someone know we finished our entrees, after waiting 20 minutes, our server finally arrived and left a dessert menu. 10 minutes passed before the table was cleared. By this time we decided to pass on dessert since we figured adding a course might add an additional 45 minutes to our time and we were already almost 2 1/2 hours into dinner. Not the service we’d expect from Republique.

The food and service were amazing! We went for dinner and we ordered the tuna tartare, 3 cheese plate, kampachi crudo, tomato salad, duck, and campanelle with lobster. All were incredible! Our favorites were the kampachi and the tomato salad. They were incredibly fresh and the flavors were extremely well balanced. Our server was also wonderful. When we asked her which dishes she recommended, she explained in detail the different flavors and ingredients. Would highly recommend this restaurant!

Absolutely would recommend. Each dish was a star all the way from appetizers to entrees (no room for dessert.) We had oysters and fresh baguette to start. Heirloom tomato salad, lobster pasta and duck for entree. Everything was cooked perfectly. Service was also impeccable. Incredibly kind and attentive without being over bearing. Perfect dining experience.

This place was horrible the food was not good. and it came highly recommended. Our food came out cold, they sat us 45 minutes late. And the waitress came by once every 30 minutes. We did not finish even one plate. The bread was good. And that’s about it. Will NEVER go back.

The food remains spectacularly good ; but the outdoor dining area isn't great but not really their fault - they only have what they have to work with and the table spacing is excellent so safety is paramount. Server seemed totally disinterested last night, and the food came in a bit of a spotty manner. Still one of THE places to eat in Los Angeles, just didn't shine last night which for the price you sort of expect.

The ribeye, although good quality, wasn’t that good. It was ruined with some unsavory gravy. Our waiter went above and beyond in providing an authentic French experience by being snobby. Wine and cocktails were delicious. It’s super expensive. Pam drippings and bread are, literally, to die for.

This is the first online restaurant review I have ever written but I feel compelled to do so because of the experience we had last evening. Republique is one of my favorite restaurants in Los Angeles (and in our neighborhood) and I was looking forward to visiting for my birthday (which was noted when the reservation was made, but never acknowledged during our visit). There appeared to be sufficient waitstaff upon arrival, but the service was slow and inattentive (used plates and cutlery remained on the table much too long) and our empty cocktail glasses were picked up half way through our main entrees and after wine was served. The corn chowder was cold but we did not note it to our waiter initially since it was complementary. Our salad was wonderful as was the bread but we needed pepper and wanted to order wine, and it took quite a bit of time to waive down (literally) a waiter. It was a considerable amount of before our main courses were served. We had the salmon and the short rib, both of which were good but lukewarm (which isn't pleasant for a very rich beef dish). Once they were served, we did not see a waiter until we were finished. When asked how dinner was, we noted that the dishes would have been better if not for the temperature. The waiter thanked us for the feedback and asked if we wanted the check (he did not ask if we wanted dessert or additional cocktails/wine, which was odd). As we were leaving, we noted the underwhelming nature of our dinner to the manager who said she would discuss our concerns with the chef (which was not a satisfying answer since the food was good, just cold This birthday could have been so much better because all of the elements were there - a beautiful place with great food. If the staff had been more attentive, most of the problems could have been remedied. I do realize that due to Covid, restaurants are short staffed. However, there seemed to be sufficient staff but there was no one very attentive serving us.

We loved Republique so much our last holiday, we had to return! Our first visit was on a mom and daughter trip and I told my husband I felt like I cheated on him with the food at Republique. This time he joined us and said our experience lived up to the high expectations. Such thoughtful care is taken with every component of each dish and it raves on the palate. You have lifelong returning guests for sure!

Interesting history of the building, beautiful decor and lighting. Server and bartender were attentive and knowledgeable. We thoroughly enjoy The Munak Ranch Heirloom Tomato Dinner's presentation and taste and would enjoy going again soon to Republique to try other items on their menu.

How much do I enjoy republique? Let me count the ways. Pre fix dinner we sat for 3.5 hours that’s how comfortable the room is the service was great such an enjoyable evening we’ll worth Friday night on the 10 freeway once you enter the restaurant it’s all behind you.

Heirloom tomatoes dinner was perfection. Competes at the highest levels among our “best of” dinners at this favorite of LA restaurants as well as with some of the best restaurants in the world. Chef always keeps us wanting to return for more. Highlights included a tomato panna cotta with uni and kaluga caviar, gazpacho with lemon cucumber and watermelon, lobster with peaches in a thai curry, and truffle topped smoked goat cheese raviolo with egg. Note: timing of service was inconsistent, ie we started dinner an hour after the reservation time even though we arrived on time, waited longer for some courses, and then rushed when one course was served in a fraction of the time between other courses … be patient and kind as I suspect it’s the pandemic and staffing issues that are ultimately beyond the proprietors’ control. That said, our “special” Republique meals are consistently among the best of the best that we consume. Extremely grateful to be in a position to enjoy this. So many gems on the regular menu that make this place our go-to place of choice when a special meal is desired.

The maitre d' mismanaged our reservation and we had to wait 25 minutes before getting to our table. It took another 15-20 minutes to get anything besides water, so the service had a pretty poor first impression.

Once we placed our order everything came in reasonable time, and the kitchen sent us a nice corn soup, compliments of the chef.

All of the food was very good, highlighted by the eggs on toast and roasted vegetables. The pasta course was also very good although probably a bit overpriced for what it was.

Overall, it was a pleasant experience once the food started coming although it was on the pricy side.

We ate outside in what was I guess the former parking lot. It's now very serene and beautiful with lots of twinkly lighting. Food was just amazing and such a joy. Started with delicious drinks and bread with pan drippings (so good!!) to get the evening going and it was all delicious with the highlight being the sole.

Food was certainly better than average. The decor and architecture is enchanting. Server was attentive. Unfortunately, looking for a stronger appetizers and larger in size. Entrees were worth the premium cost. I'd try and recommend this place.

I hate writing this review, because Republique has been my favorite high-end LA restaurant for many years, and I know the pandemic has been extremely difficult for all restaurants to deal with, financially and otherwise. But the prices of some entrees at Republique right now are just far too high for the quality of what is being served. I don’t think they can match sky-high prices with (just) good food and survive for very long. Maybe for a while, but not indefinitely. There are too many other great restaurant options in LA that are managing to produce great food at prices that, while high, don’t feel exploitive. If they cannot serve fish or steak at either a reasonable price, or with amazing quality that actually justifies an extremely high price, then they should not offer them right now. They should use their considerable talents to offer other dishes that live up to their lofty reputation. I wish them all the best and I hope to return at some point. But it won’t be for quite a while, sadly.

To be clear: the meal was good. But the price was double (really) what we have paid recently at comparable restaurants where the food was better. I’m shocked to be saying this about Republique, but it is true.
