République, located in mid-city, is owned by Chef Walter Manzke and Chef Margarita Manzke. Centered in the heart of Los Angeles, the classic building in which it resides was originally erected in 1929 by Charlie Chaplin, and later transformed into the iconic La Brea Bakery and Campanile Restaurant. République builds on this storied past, offering a gastronomic environment imbued with history and grandeur. The space features a casual bar and bistro in the front with a more formal dining area located in the rear, serving a French-inspired menu created daily by our Chefs.

Outstanding service, good, and alfresco ambiance. Love that even with the pandemic, they continue to offer their signature dishes with more hard-to-procure ingredients, such as the divine bigeye tuna tartare and duck.

The food is exquisite - as always. Eating in the partially covered parking lot is small price to pay to be out and experience the excellence in dining as we did here. The Santa Barbara prawns are outstanding, if on the menu when you come do NOT miss them.

Food explanation could be better for first timers. Was told
New menus are printed with a different meal
Everyday. Unture. The menu was exactly what I read on the website.

It was good. It bit overhyped (not by the restaurant but reviews) and the pricing does not match what one gets, value-wise. But genuinely enjoyable otherwise.

It is way overpriced for the food and quality of the food. For example we ordered the tuna appetizer which was $48. It was enough for one person and we were sharing with 4. The short ribs which were to be shared was a very small portion. A little too precious. Also, couldn’t bring your own wine which is unusual.

The service wasn't tight and there were a few unfortunate and costly miscommunications. It felt like I was overpaying and expected to play along.

I visited Republique for the Monday Night Dinner special tasting menu event in October 2020 in the midst of LA County's COVID-19 restrictions so all diners were seated outdoors al fresco in what used to be half of their valet parking lot. They did an excellent job converting it into an area highly suitable for dining and they exceed the 6 foot social distancing placement tables requirement so that's a huge plus during these COVID-19 times. I quite enjoy having meals outside so I hope they keep this format even after LA County's dining restrictions are lifted.

Some other reviewers on Open Table complained about crickets, but I didn't see any although I did hear a cricket here and there. All staff from the hostess at the front, servers and bussers were appropriately attired with PPE (personal protective equipment) gear and observed protocols so I felt quite safe and relaxed dining at Republique.

On to the food, I had the special Monday Night Tasting ($75) with a $15 supplement for a lobster gelee topped with a nice mound of caviar and the delicate gelee generously contained chunky bites of lobster. For those who aren't aware, Republique does elevated California-French bistro fare and the chef does an excellent job of highlighting the best of produce, seafood, meats and poultry the region has to offer (on this particular night, the main course was roasted quail with blackberry jus). I'm extremely salt sensitive and I'd say Republique treads a nice middle ground - not too salty, nor bland. The pastry chef is equally accomplished and renowned. If you enjoy wheat-based goods, you're in for a treat, because the baguettes are known as the best in Southern California and the rotating desserts for dinner are every bit as delicious as they're photogenic.

The meal itself was fantastic and the food never disappoints. However, it is definitely a more pricey dining experience. The highlights were the bread with pan drippings (a must!),cioppino, and the mafaldine. The short rib was OK, definitely "good" but not worth it in my opinion. For the most part the flavors were incredible and the service was excellent.

We did the prefixe menu on Monday night and it was very well put together, the service was good and the overall atmosphere was enjoyable (all things considered, due to COVID we were on their new parking lot patio).
My only critique is the pace of the meal seemed slightly rushed. All staff was highly attentive and provided great service.

Food was great, however service was less than ideal. Our table was late and the one we got was next to a wall teeming with crickets. They should consider not seating people next to that. We were also charged $8 for butter, which is something I have never been charged for at any restaurant I’ve ever been to (nor did our waitress disclose it would be extra). Finally, our entrees took an hour to arrive after we ordered. Great food, incredible ambiance, but would be hesitant to go back given the service.

This has been one of my favorite restaurants for years but we were extremely disappointed Saturday night. The service was terrible, the food not very good and it was as extremely as expensive as always. $100 a person for fine dinning can be acceptable but this meal was far from that. They didn’t ask if we wanted coffee or dessert and rushed us out. Absolutely can not recommend.

I love coming here. The bread and butter are a must and got the standard faves like the shorty rib and cavatelli... delicious. As well as our service from Tyler.
Only thing was, we were sitting outside of course, and we were against the wall and there were A LOT of crickets...climbing up and down. Nothing came on the table, but we had to ignore them even when they were less than a foot from our food.

Food was amazing! The prices are a bit much but worth it. Seeing as it’s a full bar, don’t order a bottled beer or a regular cocktail as those are not worth the price they charge so I definitely recommend ordering one of the listed specialty cocktails listed on the menu. We had the ‘peach’ and it was delicious! Our waitress was amazing and friendly and recommended some delicious choices. Overall a great experience.
