Chef/Owner Eric Brenner spent his first decade in the industry inside Italian kitchens. Talking up St. Louis' wide-ranging Italian eatery scene, which gets as specific as regional specialties, he says he's wanted to have a place like this since he was 18.
"We're going to start very simple and accessible," he says, "we'll play to the crowd and start a dialogue, then grow the menu with community input."
"Simple," includes dishes like his tomato bisque, with which only has five ingredients. "It's all about the perfect balance. And that gets back to the essence of good Italian food: quality ingredients, very few, in perfect balance." Other examples include his St. Louis-style, thin-crust pizza, best compared to a flat-bread.
This place was awesome from beginning to end!! We had toasted raviolis to begin with. Then a cup of tomato bisque. Then had lobster risotto and chicken picatta. Ended the meal with tiramisu creme brûlée. Everything was delicious!!! Can’t wait to go back!
They have some great Italian food made with fresh ingredients. All six of us enjoyed our meals. The creamy marinara sauce and the tomato bisque is absolutely delicious.
Great dining experience. Good atmosphere and delicious food! Will definitely be back soon!
I write this review with mixed feelings and broken heart. I have dined at Red Gravy Co. before and absolutely adore the food! I hate leaving a poor review. However, the service, or lack thereof has earned this. Let me reiterate, the food was phenomenal and I would still recommend RGC to a friend, but solely based on the spectacular quality of the food. The service we received on Saturday night was abysmal. We had a reservation, arrived 5 minutes before the reservation and had still not seen/interacted with a hostess 20 minutes after the reservation. We snagged 2 seats at the bar, where we ended up dining. During our stay, we did not witness any form of front of house management. The hostess was clearing tables and never at the front desk; it seemed like she was avoiding the waiting area, where many people with reservations stood grumbling. To their credit, we were finally offered a table, but only after having drinks and ordering our food at the bar. Overall, the evening was painful to witness.
We arrived with a reservation on a Saturday at 5:30, and, unlike some restaurants, Red Gravy had a table reserved for us. This busy Italian eatery is located in downtown Colorado Springs; parking is always a problem Our table was in a back room that we didn't know existed, and I would call the room "average", in terms of appearance and set-up. Tables had cloth tablecloths and napkins; pictures on the walls were sort of random looking and not all straight (yeah, I'm a fuss-pot about stuff like this). They could spend a little time and really improve the appearance of this room. The tables were not too close together, but a nearby guest had a screaming-loud cackle that broke out occasionally. Although we're both a bit hard of hearing, we had no trouble having a conversation while we waited.
A very nice waitress came very quickly and took care of our needs during the meal. A bottle of water and glasses were already on the table. We ordered wine, which was available both by the glass and by the bottle--good wine, at an average restaurant price, though there weren't many choices. Two small pieces of good herbed bread were already on the table, but there was no butter; apparently, we were supposed to dip it in oil that was also present in a cruet. The waitress didn't ask us whether we wanted more bread or a salad with our meal (it doesn't come with it), and I didn't think of it until after we had ordered. The food came fairly quickly (I'd say about average for a busy non-chain restaurant). It was super, as we expected, and the portions were very generous. We are seniors, and we had enough for a second meal. The waitress kindly boxed the left-overs and brought them to us. We split an excellent dessert, which was also generous and very good. Our waitress was quick about bringing the bill (but didn't rush us) and taking care of our credit-card transaction.
With a little work, Red Gravy could be better than it is. It has a few shortcomings, but we like it.
The food is always great... plus solid local beer (goat patch hazy) and local whiskey (axe and oak)... Red Gravy is one of the best places in downtown Colorado Springs.
The food was excellent!
The service was pretty good but the waitress seemed a bit rushed and distracted. I'd be curious to see if this was just because of the holiday, poor training, or understaffing.
The atmosphere was nice, with cozy decor and elegant touches here and there. Basics like is the table level were in good order.
The food is definitely the star of the experience. I absolutely loved my meal and will definitely be back. This is an experience I feel confident recommending.
Our meal on Valentine’s Day was terrific. The gluten free salmon was perfect for my wife. The lobster special was delicious and our service was wonderful. Thanks for a great Valentine!
This has become one of our favorite restaurants in the Springs. The food is unique and delicious. Service and atmosphere are great too.
Fairly expensive, but that's in keeping with the convenient downtown location. My wife like the food quite a bit; my pizza selection was just OK. The service was very responsive and cordial, and our entrees arrived promptly. Making the reservation for our 35th wedding anniversary was perfect. Thanks for starting us off for a lovely evening!
Food was flavorful. Ample portions. Pleasant environment. Staff were attentive and responsive. Very much enjoyed our evening.
Great date night location. Good selection of cocktails, but they were happy to mix whatever you liked. We sat at a table by the window and enjoyed the Tejon foot traffic. Our server paid us just the right amount of attention without being ever-present.
I love the food but the price for spaghetti and 2 big meatballs shouldn't be $17.95. I will only recommend as an expensive restaurant. Was not the same service as the last time I went in December 2019. Tasty food though.
Food was so delicious but the server was more concerned about their friend that was at a table nearby. Would recommend still
Generous portions. The bread served as a appetizer was dry and very little flavor. I thought there should have been some balsamic vinegar to mix with the olive oil.
Don't let the name fool you. This is a good Italian restaurant in a nice casual setting. They have a nice though moderate selection of entrees, appetizers, and salads with a decent wine and beer selection. A great addition to downtown.
Great service, superb gluten free and regular food!
Food was fantastic. Sunday gravy was so good! Tomato Bisque was delicious . The service was disappointing but I think that was just our server. She never offered us more drinks, Parmesan Cheese or ground pepper like the other servers did for other tables. Also, she brought us our soup after she delivered the entrees. Because we were in a hurry we didn’t realize she overcharged us. I would go back but would refuse to have her for a server.
This was the second time my husband and I have been to the restaurant. First time everything was amazing. This last time our service was horrible! I even recommended this restaurant to many of my friends I just hope they don’t have the same experience as me my second time around.
Food was good. Service not so much. Table next to us had to complain to get a box 15min after asking. We asked for a few things and never got them. Had to ask another waitress to cash out our bill, we told our server we had to leave to catch a show and she nerve came back to charge our card.
Nice atmosphere, food was good and service was friendly. We’d recommend red gravy.
The food at Red Gravy was amazing! We had the best roasted brussel sprouts and salmon we've ever ate. Our friends enjoyed the pasta carbonara. The drinks were excellent and the service superb. We had a great table by the window where we could look out on downtown Colorado Springs. We highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a delicious, fun night out.
This restaurant has spectacular Italian food bring your friends you'll be glad you did
This Italian restaurant is fantastic, you won't be disappointed.
We love Red Gravy.! The food, ambience, service and wine all make it a favorite.
Great food, great service. Will def be back in the future!
Appetizers (meatballs and the Brussels sprouts) were hot and tasted amazing. Pizza was lukewarm to cold when it came out and neither pasta dish was memorable. Dessert chocolate cake was uneven, parts of cake were soft other parts very hard. Server was pleasant but seemed extremely busy. Don't know if will return for dinner.
Our first time here, but certainly not our last. The food selection was great and what we ordered was very good.
This was probably my 5th or 6th trip to Red Gravy over the last couple of years. The food never disappoints! Some of the dishes we ordered included the veal parm, the butternut tortelloni, the sea scallops and the chicken saltimbocca. The service was a touch slow but they were really busy! The service though was never lacking in attention.
We always enjoy our visits to Red Gravy. It has a nice urban (almost NYC) vibe with very friendly and prompt service. The food is quite good with some excellent dishes. I suggest reservations because it is not a secret and can fill up quickly. They also have a nice party room in the back for private parties. Portions are large, and we never feel rushed. One of our favorite "go-to" places in downtown.
We had a surprise dinner for our granddaughter this past Saturday evening and the staff was very helpful in keeping the surprise. Thanks to the staff!
Always consider it a repeat when I'm in town no matter who I'm with.
It was a great experience it was my boyfriends birthday and it was a great experience
Excellent Italian foods, very like a good Italian cook's homemade. The eggplant parmesan was outstanding, and so was the pasta with chicken in a creamy sauce. Our server was pleasant, accommodating and efficient.
Food was overall good, I think a salad should be included with the meal for the price, but one was not included.
The waitress was not attentive at all, there was a large party in the back of the restaurant and it appeared the front tables of the restaurant were neglected. I would rate the customer service portion below average for this type of establishment.
The atmosphere was good, nothing fancy, but nice.
Seating is a little cramped, but the service was great and the food was very good for the price. I thought it compared favorably to Panzano's in Denver for about 2/3 the price per entree. A little loud but the restaurant was very full for the Parade of Lights. We definitely will go again.
I have severe dietary restrictions that make it difficult to dine in most restaurants because they all use pre-prepared sauces, pre-seasoned meats and poultry, etc . When I ask at most restaurants whether they can make an accommodation, for example, whether they can make an order of calamari dredged in plain flour as opposed to seasoned flour (salt is a no-no), most will say they can't. But at Red Gravy, the Chef is not only accommodating, but specially trained in dealing with food allergies. He not only did the calamari, but told me he could do any white sauce on the menu without salt. For the first time since I was forced on this diet, I found a restaurant with more than one or two possibilities. And the food was delicious, which isn't easy without salt. I highly recommend.
Atmosphere, food, service, and drinks were all top notch!! We will definitely be coming back!!
Birthday meal with family. My second experience here. Love it overall. Love the look and ambiance of the place. Our Appetizers and drinks were fabulous!
Our entrees weren’t as great as my first experience here. The steak was a bit tough, over cooked. Sauce on another dish we ordered was bland. Still love the restaurant and plan to return. Our entrees just weren’t as great this time.
The waitstaff was working constantly and very hard to keep up, but they are being asked to do too much. Our server was also the only bartender for the entire restaurant. We made a 7pm reservation and were sat about 7:30. They gave us a round of drinks for this problem, and the acknowledgement was much appreciated. The food is delicious, and the portion sizes are absolutely HUGE (and I have a big appetite.). Seriously... the Fettucini carbonara could feed 3 hungry people easily.
