About this restaurant

  • Neighborhood gem
  • Good for special occasions
  • Charming
The name Zacatlán surged from the origins of our chef, Eduardo Rodriguez. He was born in Zacatecas, Mexico (north-central Mexico), which is defined as "the habitants of the land where grass grows". Zacatlán is the nahuatl translation for "land with an abundance of grass", and that is where our idea of Zacatlán Restaurant began.

Zacatlán Restaurant desires to continue to preserve the traditions for our upcoming generations, while bringing forth new flavors. These new flavors incorporate Southwestern and Mexican influences. We are established near the Santa fe Plaza, right off of Guadalupe Street. We want to unveil a new fusion of food for everyone in Santa Fe and those who visit.

We dined here on Sunday, May 25—and it was a rough night from the start. We arrived at 7:10 for a 7:15 reservation for four, but weren’t seated until 7:25—“waiting for a few tables to clear.” A bad sign, but we stayed optimistic. We ordered a bottle of champagne, which arrived quickly and was beautifully served. That was the high point. Then the stall-out began. We waited nearly 50 minutes for our entrees. Three arrived together. The fourth—bone marrow—came about 10 minutes later, dropped off as the rest of us were halfway through. No explanation, no apology. Just... here you go. After well over an hour at the table, our second round of mains arrived—again staggered, with a five-minute gap between the first and second pair. The two-top next to us was also spiraling: the woman got the wrong dish, then waited 30+ minutes for a replacement while her partner had long finished eating. The dining room was tense. You could feel it. Floor staff had all but disappeared—no check-ins, no “we’re so sorry,” no offer of anything to make it right. They were hiding in the back, clearly overwhelmed. And in such a small, tightly packed space, that kind of energy spreads fast. Maybe a chef quit mid-service. Maybe the whole line crashed. Doesn’t matter. What matters is we sat for nearly two hours, mostly waiting, trying to enjoy a meal that never quite came together. The food? Just okay. Oversized portions, sloppy plating, sauce smudges on the rims, haphazard splatters of mole. One dish was missing its garnish entirely. Dessert? Not a chance. We wanted out. Final bill—with champagne and tip—was $500. Brutal. Two nights earlier we had a fantastic meal at Sazón. The next night, Geronimo delivered flawlessly. Both were night-and-day better—and nearly the same price. Some reviews say this was a fluke. Maybe. But once was more than enough. Never again.

My wife and I went for dinner while visiting Santa Fe. We ordered two specials (elk and prawns) and both were excellent. Great flavor and cooked perfectly. Bread pudding dessert was also delicious. Highly recommend.

We came for Saturday brunch and ordered avocado toast, and the Zacatlán huevos rancheros, both were outstanding. The avocado toast was especially tasty with smoked salmon on the side. We would return without hesitation.

Fabulous experience! Food was excellent, accompanied by the best list of wines by the class we’ve ever seen. The house is very intimate and tucked away from Santa Fe plaza tourist scene - can’t wait to return!
